View Full Version : Any covered pools?

My wife and I recently bought a house in The Villages and plan on moving there when we retire in a couple of years. Before buying, we researched many retirement communities and visited several others. One thing that impressed us at a couple of other communities was that the pool (and yes, most had only one pool) was partially covered. This allowed those of us who haven't developed Florida tans yet to keep from being roasted alive (especially me with my paler-than-pale, too-many-years-in-the-office, bleached, Scandahoovian* skin). We've only really looked at a couple of the many, many pools in The Villages but didn't happen to see any with any kind of cover, whether a roof or a "sail" or whatever. Are any of the pools in The Villages covered?

* Yes, Scandahoovian. My ancestors were scattered all over northern Europe, none from any place were people ever got much of a tan or maybe even ever heard of a tan.

No covered pools in TV. All pools are topless.

We have installed a cantilever umbrella that covers one end of our pool and provides some nice shade cover during the mid day sun. Got it at Lowes, around 200 bucks.

With all the hoopla about skin cancer for the last decade or more, this rather surprises me. Oh well, I'll just have to swim my laps with a sun-blocking t-shirt and swim cap.

Agree you can get sunburn real quick in the pool.

I'll have to wear a t-shirt too! I burn quickly and sometimes blister! It doesn't take long!

They sell long sleeved swim shirts. A lot of pool exercisers wear them.

Here are some;

Swim Shirts, Sun Shirts, Sun Protection Clothing, UV Swimwear & More! (http://www.uvskinz.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Clothing%20-%20General&utm_term=%2Bsun%20%2Bprotection%20%2Bclothing)

Swimming those laps before or after the periods of the sun's intensity might be of benefit, too.

And you might want to look into the newest To Your Health Spa & Fitness business opening soon on Rt441/27 in Lady Lake http://tooyourhealthspa.yolasite.com/ They participate in Silver Sneakers and Silver & Fit Experience programs- so much more than just laps - and a variety of memberships, too.

Kahuna, I wasn't serious about inviting myself to your pool. I was just spoofing around. I'm up north for the summer anyway.
But your pool and large umbrella sound very inviting, and a wonderful solution for those who are fortunate enough to have a private pool!

Get a few of the sunscreen pullover shirts. I have four. Rub in sunscreen & wear a large hat. I was born & raised in Miami. Have had many skin cancers removed. Been lucky so far. Oh...also pull my chair into the shady areas of the pool when I'm not in the water.

Lands End has them on sale right now--lots of variety. I believe shipping is free. I have two of them and like them so much better than smearing on greasy sun block that doesn't work too well in the water anyway.

I always wear a TYR Lycra cap at the Mulberry pool. My bald head has problems. I've been doing water aerobics for at least 25 years...mostly ladies in the class..scenery is good!

Its hard to believe a community of 100,000 people doesn't have a covered pool, and one with chillers. If you are swimming laps, you can wear long sleeved shirts, but they are restricting, and I find them warm to wear in the summer, especially when the water is like bathwater. We have many times during the period from May through September/October when the water is 90+ degrees. And the water is so reflective, you still get sun damage on other parts of the body like your legs and face, that are not being covered. Many of us lap swim at 7:00 when the pools first open. The downside is, there are a lot of people that do that,, so you split a lane, and if you get there right after 7:00 you might have to sit and wait for awhile before you can get a spot. In the winter its easier to get a spot at 7:00 but the outside temperature might be in the 30's! Given the size of our community, and the number of serious swimmers there are, there is no question, that there should be at least one covered pool in the Villages, and at least one pool with chillers for the summer months.

It is hard to believe in a community of 100,000 people that we don't have adequately supplied art rooms. Many people use oil paints and thinners that cause air pollution and allergic reactions among sensitive people. YOU CAN open the door, but the downside to that is it causes the room to be hot or cold depending on the outside temperature. There is NO place to store your art project unless you are a clayer or a ceramic person and they get a WHOLE room for their kiln. The rest of us have to drag heavy stuff in and out and it is a strain on our backs. There is not one pencil sharpener in any of the art rooms in the entire place and we are forced to bring our own. There are NO easels supplied. We have to buy our own supplies and that is expensive for some. We only have seven well lighted and beautifully decorated art rooms with large portable mirrors so that the class can see what the instructor is doing........ Given the size of our community and the number of serious artists............

I know that was not nice and very direct, but the point I was trying to make is that this place is pretty near perfect...AND if we continue to "tweek" it to make it just right for everyone...then everyone is going to have to PAY REAL MONEY. I think that we need to think and think again before we make big changes..or even little ones, if we are unhappy with something.

I could make a corollary to a LOT of things, but if we stand back at look at the big picture, well it's pretty good. PRETTY GOOD.

If one pool with chillers and one covered pool were to be provided for 100,000 residents,
there would be a huge public outcry: "It's not close enough to MY Village".

The ratio of the population of TV to the amenities makes some things impossible here. A covered pool would not work. Too many people would want to use it.

In the winter, even getting into the sports pools for water aerobics classes is really difficult, along with other things, too.

The size of TV provides the momentum that keeps things going, but that very size also can be what makes it frustrating for some. It's trade-off.

I posted this info a couple of months ago on a thread wanting indoor pools. A gym out of Ocala is opening their 5th location in Lady Lake across from Oakwood BBQ. They only charge about $20 per month if you sign up early. They seem to be well equipped as much as MVP and they will also offer classes just like MVP plus the will have a 60' indoor pool. Their website is A full-service gym in Ocala, FL. | Too Your Health Spas (http://www.tooyourhealthspa.org/) and for updates on the new location, go to their facebook page.

Too bad they only made it 20 yards, instead of the standard 25 yards. That doesn't work well for lap swimmers.
