View Full Version : What has happened to our Village's reputation

Read an article today in a northern NY newspaper about STD's. According to the CDC 2013 The Villages has a STD rate of 277.5 per one hundred thousand. This was one of the lowest rates in the country. A nearby comparison is Tampa / St Pete at 731.6 per one hundred thousand. The top ten cities in the US range from 1899.2 per one hundred thousand (#1) to 1489.2 per one hundred thousand (#10). What has happened to our active lifestyle?

A ride through TV will show that our active lifestyle is alive and well. Aside from the obvious golfing seniors go to any town square and you will find seniors shopping and eating and after 5PM (sometimes before) they are dancing and singing. I come from NY and I believe NY is being decimated by seniors leaving NY State for Florida and other states. I couldn't wait to get out of that state and I only have to go back once a year for the holidays thank goodness. As far as STD's that is old news and is mostly made up in my opinion for the reason I stated about NY.

I am confused by that OP;

How can you have 1899.2 - 1489.2 per thousand? 1899 is more than a thousand, is it not?

Is the low STD rate supposed to be a reflection or gauge of a poor active lifestyle in the Villages? Does Tampa / St. Pete have a better active life style because they have a higher STD rate?

Something must have been read incorrectly, please share the source for this article.

Math is hard, but I don't get your numbers. Are you saying 3 out of 4 people in Tampa have an std?

To answer the question....."nothing!
You just happen to get some old tabloid type info that has wrong numbers.
There are over 100,000 of us living quite happily in the best possible, outstanding lifestyle areas on the planet.

Joyce you are so right - math is not so hard but mornings before coffee are. The data was per one hundred thousand not thousand. I'll try to edit the original post.

If you came here with STD wouldn't you spread it if you are having sex with several partners on campus or off? probably going to get worse as baby boomers become majority? Yep, know what I'm saying:popcorn:

The article sounds like it is filled with flawed stats. I don't give it much credit for being true based on this. I would be more afraid of what goes on in the other Florida cities and not so much Tv.

I am sure that every resident of The Villages is very sick of discussing this issue. The bottom line is that the statistics do not exist. STDs are reported by county and then broken into cities. The Villages is in 3 counties. Statistics are available for Sumter, Lake and Marion counties. Statistics are available for Ocala (Marion), Wildwood (Sumter) and Fruitland Park (Lake). But if someone reports that the statistics are for The Villages alone they are not true. By the way, CDC reports rates per 100,000, not 1,000.

Most Tv seniors have regular health care checkups so wouldn't it be detected and possibly treated if possible. I would hope so and if you knew you were infected , what are your possible legal responsibilities. For hiv positive you can be prosecuted.

Read the O.P.s post carefully once again. He is clowning around. He just made it up. It is meant to be a funny, If you read it carefully it is saying humorously that we no longer have people reporting us as passing around STDs and we have dropped the ball or ....the plural. He is asking us why we aren't out there spreading STDs and keeping up that old erroneous reporting from NINE years ago.

Go back and read it one more time. Read it and see if that isn't the gist of it. Rustyp you scoundrel. Many of us haven't taken our Blood Pressure medicine yet.

Yeah, Gracie! I was beginning to think I was missing something in the post.

As to the problem, I think the pre-activities like dancing are wearing out our partners before they can get things up and going.

Thank you Gracie, I read it as a joke also. I was going to post LOL - good one, but didn't want to be the first post - o well, no harm done - TV is a great place to live.

The myth/story/fact of a high STD rate in TV has been discussed and disputed many times. To the best of my knowledge health records, including STD stats, are kept at the county level. While TV is a very large community it spans 3 counties, so I am suspect of any reporting that does not explain in detail it's data source. Being realistic we all know that reporters love to slant the news, and the facts, to suit there needs.

If you really are concerned stop by a county clerks office to ask where you can find health data yourself.

When I first bought here my sister who has a very large golf front home in Jupiter asked me about that. She also wanted to know if there were signs hanging up reminding people to be cautious. All I could do was laugh. [emoji12]

The original report said the STD was ("higher, than the national average"), and I believe the report, was erroneous.

It's like the old story where one person starts a story and by the time it's told to the tenth person, the story doesn't resemble anything like the original.

It's a wonderful activate community that shouldn't have it's reputation sullied by those who have no concept, of what it is really like here.

Sometimes, humor is lost, in this type of communication.

From the CDC, the data for The Villages is:

Population: 101,620

Chlamydia Cases: 233
Gonorrhea Cases: 47
Syphilis Cases: 2

Total STDs: 282

Rate per 100K population: 277.5

The city with the highest rate was Montgomery, AL with a rate of 1899.2 per 100K. The Villages is not even in the top 100. So, another myth shattered....:a040::a040::a040:

the title of thisr post kinda disturbs me,you act like it is a bad thing that the std rate is down,I know at least 300 people in the villages that i speak to and have gotten to know over the years and not a single one seems like they would do that kind of stuff. i do see swingers with their loofas on the cars here and there but everyone ive met in the villages seems to be very standup people that have their stuff together. personally though from the things i read on here it seems its more like a place for whining about this or that.its sad.

Every time I see a loofah on a roof in traffic I do my best to catch up to the car. And every time I succeed when I look at the driver or passenger I think to myself, these people don't know what a loofah on the roof means in TV.

I went to a wild party in TV one night. When I walked in we had to put our golf cart key in a punch bowl. At the end of the night we all swapped golf carts.

Dear rustyp: I do not know if you were joking or not. there is a footnote below your post indicating you edited it about an hour later due to errors in original numbers. But whether you were or were not joking the message sent by you was not funny in my view.

It was not funny because it recycles a nasty myth which in my view, and perhaps others, is not respectable of seniors, like were all crazies on blue pills.

Well I don't take blue pills:wave::D

So maybe the joke is on me. A while ago I was told that if you were into swinging, you put a loofah on your car antenna or roof to catch the attention of other swingers.
In Catholic grammar school, every friday some of the boys use to time which girls were in the confessional booth the longest.
I have a good imagination but that's where it ends.
