View Full Version : Rude at The Sharon

DH and I went to tonight's BJ Thomas concert. The concert was enjoyable ~ except for the group of four women directly behind us.
They arrived moments before the concert ~ the band was on stage ~ and proceeded to yak and fluff and debate whether or not they should sing.
BJ Thomas came on stage and they continued to talk. Not whispers, back and forth conversation. My DH eventually turned around and made full eye contact with two of them. Shortly after that, one of the women began taking pictures with a tablet, using a flash.
A women to my right, in the same row as the yakkers, said 'Lady, will you put that thing away' and I turned around and said 'and shut up'.
They did put it away, and quieted, but continued to whisper.
What on earth do you do with people this rude? I considered contacting the usher, but that would be even more disruptive, as there was no intermission.

Heard it happens at the shows in NYC too...folks even bring in food and eat during them. Entitlement is the word for that IMHO.

unfortunately...you ignore them
if you confront them...you stoop to their level
i don't understand where we went wrong in teaching respect and courtesy...but somehow we missed the mark.
one night my husband took me to see Carrie Underwood....this group of young people decided to stand in front of me.....i screamed sit down....it embarrassed my husband and did no good whatsoever
i don't know what the answer is....i really don't

Yeah. Scolding them was not my finest hour. I feel it is disrespectful to the artist not to pay attention.
This group was hard to ignore.

And the management at the Sharon doesn't help either. There were people in front of us holding their phones above their heads and taking video of the performance. Not an usher to be found. I suspect there is some desperation on the part of management to fill seats so they are allowing activity that you wouldn't find at other venues. They still do not sell out the majority of the shows and I suspect us seniors will soon tire of the venue once the novelty wears off. And, did you notice the dress of many that attended? Respect for the performers and others that attend isn't there and management doesn't care. Orlando is calling.

It's really hard to believe that people can be so rude and inconsiderate.
I think as soon as they arrived and started talking, you should have politely asked them not to talk, rather than stewing about it.
Having said that, I probably would have said nothing and sat there and been irritated about their lack of manners.

What exactly does this statement mean? I have seen
rude behavior from people all over this country!

We were there also. By the way B.J. Thomas outdid himself. He is still going great at 73 years old and sounds wonderful!
I sat up high so I could observe many phones videotaping and snapping photos during the show. The ushers were sitting down enjoying the show and they are volunteers anyway. The girl to the right of me had a big bright tablet and was playing solitairre the entire show.

Patti Lupone took the phone from a person taking pictures @ her show in NYC--Simple way to stop this garbage-Put the house lights on & stop the show until all the rudeness stops. I may bring a laser pointer & bounce it of the tablets of people taking pictures--maybe they'll get the message

First, I was not at the show, but IMHO this sounds alot like another case of rules being in place and then not being enforced by the staff.

I went to see The Lion King with my extended family in NYC. We had good seats in the center. Just as the show starts this petite woman and extremely tall son sit in front of me and someone else. The woman puts down a booster seat and blocks my view and now I need to wait until intermission to get an usher because when I asked her to not use a booster, she blew me off.
At intermission the usher offered her a better seat if she gave up the booster. The booster seats are for children if they are in the last row. She moves, the usher leaves and then she turns around and tells her son to move over and sit in front of me.

Sadly, inconsideration and rudeness are the way of the world for most. My husband and I always comment on how inconsiderate many people are. What happened to showing respect for others, especially performers when at a show? The problem is that rules are made and most take them as a suggestion. If someone with authority actually walked the isles during a performance and asked people to put away their electronics, cameras, etc, then people would get the message. Same with the Pages of rules and regulations that you got when you signed up to live in TV. They are merely suggestions, so people break them all the time. I think we are going to have to get use to it. It is the way of the world. It's very disappointing.

The talking also happens at movie theaters. Some folks act like they are sitting at home in front of their television. I just try my best to ignore it, but it's distracting, so not easy to do.

Are there any teachers or subs on the thread? Do you remember cafeteria duty? Telling kids to return their tray or lower their voice.
When I went to Catholic Prep HS, the Brother on duty would just walk over and smack you on the back of the head or choke you from the back of the neck if you acted up. Even if that was acceptable where I taught I couldn't do that.
I had caf duty for a year and about the 4th day I made 3 signs. The first one said "Please return your tray". The second one said "I'm not kidding." and I would just stand there until they got up. The third one said "Thank-you". I never had a problem after that and if the kids seen me walking towards the table, carrying my signs, they would all get up and return the trays rather than be hassled or escorted to the main office.
When I go to the Sharon, if I remember, I will be carrying a couple of hand-outs asking someone to please keep quiet because I can't move my seat and I want to hear the entertainer although in my heart I might want to hit them on the back of the head or choke them from behind like the good old days.

LOL! Not a teacher, but did twelve years of Catholic schooling. Sometimes you gotta get their attention.
Someone mentioned a laser pen. I think an usher with authority and a laser pen could work. Shine it on offenders, they'd get the hint.

I think an announcement should be made twice at the beginning of the show saying those who don't comply will be asked to leave. When they do not comply, a big spotlight should shine on them, then they are shown out.

Orlando isn't a bad idea! However, the catch. IF you buy annual pass to Disney at ~$1100 for two, besides the discounts, parks, parking, blah blah blah, you also get FREE CONCERTS to many NAME bands and Many tribute bands. It's only a 50 minute drive and can do other things when in Orlando. it pay for itself? The Sharon at even $80 for two would be 13 concerts, but not a variety. Eat the Beats Concert lineup for Sept-Nov include bands like:
Wilson Phillips
Christopher Cross
Starship
The Pointer Sisters
38 Special
Rick Springfield
Air Supply
JoDeeMessina
DennisDeYoung
Boys II Men
Chaka Khan
To name some. Plus summer and winter series of 22+ tribute and other bands each series. Seating is about 500+ they say.
Tribute bands like:
The Eagles
Bee Gees
Thinking of trying it..
Would take maybe 10 concert or so to pay for it.

They are 35-40 minutes but 3 an afternoon per band per day. Each one has different songs and variety. In between you can shop, look around, ride the rides, or whatever. They also have other acts in betweenness hat are VERY good. It is first come first serve but usually not full. If you went to all 60+ it would be $18 or so per couple! Lol
It is amphitheater seating with ~60% outside and 40% covered. Good sound and stage. All sit down seating unless you want to stand in the back.
It is right on the water in front of the American exhibit in Epcot.

The Disney "concerts" are very short--30-45 minutes, but they're still fun. You also don't get tickets or specific seating. For more popular acts, you must get in line early and wait until they open the outdoor theater. Weather can also be a factor. Is it worth it? To us it is because we love the parks.

TOTALLY AGREE with you :) The parks, especially Epcot we like. But what better way to enjoy all that, plus Downtown Disney, plus the fireworks at night, go to the concerts in between, and bounce between parks, all the New Years and Christmas, and other holiday celebrations, garden shows, wine festivals, no blackout times and more. Less than an hour away. As I said though, the band for that day plays 3 times (different music for the most part), about an 1.5-2 hours apart I think. In between are other acts.
Not to hi-jack the Sharon thread here, but for the money and looking at the acts at The Sharon and Villages entertainment, and all the shenanigans talked bout HERE, it looks like MUCH more bang for the buck over one year time. Even the 6 month one is nice.

Don't you think there are enough people going to Disney on a regular basis to support a bus. I wonder if Disney would consider sending one on non-crowded days when the kids are in school. Casinos do it and although I know you gamble, you also drop a few bucks whenever you go in that park. Does someone want to start a new thread?

Back to the Sharon.
"Rude is rude", no matter where you come from. A couple from Denver and Minnesota ruined a performance at KB's for me, and my guest.
BTW - Not all NY people are rude and I really don't don't like it, when someone paints, with a broad brush.
I agree, this is another instance where rules are not enforced, like saving seats in the squares. How long has that being going on without being enforced? Some people feel they have lived long enough, to feel a sense, of entitlement.
Then some people have lived long enough, to know, it's not nice, to a "PITA", and play nice.

There are plenty of people playing that know golf etiquette - run off the ones that don't. Flag the ID's of the ones they run off until they complete the good golf school.
People need to quit "minding their own business" and being "afraid to get involved" and start standing up for what they believe is right. You are not stooping to their level if you say something to the "entitled ones" at The Sharon who act like primary school children. You paid good money to see a show; demand they give you the price of your ticket back if they continue to play "chatty Cathy".

Majority of folks at NYC Broadway shows come from out of town. Many performers will simply stop performing if there's something going in the audience. Sorry, goodtimesintv, but your comment is a bit insulting to those of us from NYC. When we go to the theater, we pay good money for shows, and I don't know too many people who would put up with that nonsense
As for the comment posted about being upset with people standing during a Carrie Underwood concert, please take note that this happens at every pop music concert. My,husband and I went to Ft. Lauderdale for The Rascals concert (all people our age or older) and everyone stood up! My husband is slightly handicapped and he couldn't see a thing onstage, and we had expensive aisle seats for this. Rudeness knows no age limit!

I'm a simple man. How easy is it to establish, inform, and enforce basic rules and regulations. Such as>
Please - during tonight's performance:
NO talking
NO phone or iPad/Tablet use (texting included)
NO taking of pictures or videos
As a courtesy to the performers and fellow audience members around you - these rules will be enforced during today's performance.
Please follow them in order not to be alerted by ushers during the show.
Large signs at the entrance to the auditorium and a stern announcement introducing the show. And>>> adherence to these rules by management.

Perhaps Bogie was going to say something like this. I think he is very wise.
We really don't need anymore short fuses around here. If you are a strong person you will step back when you feel the urge to use force of any kind.
Walk away from idiocy, to me that shows strength. I figured this out in grade school. Only use force if someone is directly trying to use physical force to hurt you or your family. Not because someone is taking pictures at an expensive show.
I no longer hold the job I did. I am retired. I still cannot seem to stifle the desire to teach or explain things. But we all need to know WHEN to stop. Or have dear friends who will point it out to us.
My sermon for this Sunday.
Oh...and bless you all.

I simply went on live chat and she removed a $39.95 charge. no pain no strain. ihave always been sent away happy after chatting with these agents for anything from troube to getting a new offer. my point is why all the complaining on here instead of going to the scource.

Just curious and no real concern.
Does The Sharon have any notices posted about "no weapons allowed inside"?
Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea after a couple of the comments?
Fortunately, in Florida, it doesn't matter what the Sharon owners say regarding firearms.

I guess you're not ecstatic regarding Florida's SYG law?

Not everybody is a former LEO and has a black-belt in Karate. What happens when the 80-year-old tells the loud-mouth to quiet down or give him his ticket money... and he laughs and tells the old guy to stfu?
If in fact, you are 80 yo, the proper response would be to continue to chide him, politely but annoyingly, until he punches you. When you come to in the hospital, call a good attorney and sue the pants off of this guy. This, or course, is presuming the loud mouth is wearing a tux and appears to have money. If not, then sit down and shut up.

I think this might work. Show this nostalgic trailer that also sends a message. I don't remember seeing it.

I do remember the 10 Little Indians trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQTr0ikqaZc), counting off the minutes before the movie was about to begin at the drive-in.
