We are considering moving to Florida (possibly the Villages) and want to know for those of you that have Rosacea, how does the Florida heat and sun affect your face? I live in Ohio now and am under a doctors care for this using Antibiotics (minocycline) and using Metrocream and this helps my skin manage. I am very sensitive to sunscreens both physical and chemical so I wear floppy hats instead. My concern is how do other fellow sufferers handle the excessive heat of Florida and keeping your Rosacea under control.

I have Rosacea as well. I use clear zinc as my sunscreen and wear a hat. I have stopped antibiotics and any prescription medication such as finacea. Both react to sun. There is a new day spa near the villages that does organic treatments - so much better.

I've had Rosacea for a very long time, when it was first diagnosed
my doctor said a topical cream would be better than oral medicine
if spent a lot of time in the sun. You might ask your doctor about this.
I spend a lot of time in the sun and heat, but for many years I
have applied metro gel or cream each morning to my nose and cheeks.
For me this has worked great, and I have not had any worsening
of the condition or flair ups!
Everyone is different, but I personally have not had trouble with the sun or heat.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to wear your floppy hat though!

I was diagnosed with this condition in my mid to late 30's (25 yrs ago or so). I'm under a similar treatment as you. We've lived here 6 yrs. There is a Rosecea foundation (it's based out of Chicago) where you can get updates re: studies on this. Anyway, we all have our individual "triggers" to flares with this condition. Mine is humidity but my condition seems well-managed as I flare "maybe" once or twice a year. I don't spend a lot of time in the sun but when I do, I wear a hat (no sun-screen due to it irritating me). The foundation will say "they can't give a true cause of this"...it may be genetic, it may be due to mites but who knows. As I've gotten older I'm exhibiting dryness and more itching. IF anyone knows of a good treatment, post it here. Oh...I'm seeing a functional medicine doctor for some other health issues so I may also speak to him re: this.

Gracie, i think it is such an individual thing. I had low levels of vitamin D and my rosacea has been much improved by getting my level up to normal. I couldn't say whether there is a direct connection ......

I was googling to find out if a lot of sun made it worse and found that article.. I don't know a thing about rosacea. It would be awful to move here to find that it worsened. Vitamin D is formed under the skin with the action of sunlight. I remember that from science class.
I will tell the OP it is VERY hot and VERY humid for several months and a lot of us stay indoors just because of the heat.

Clear zinc is a chemical sunscreen, not good for rosacea. Blue lizard SENSITIVE is best zinc, non chemical sunscreen. Also, Florida water is bad for skin, high chlorine.

Graciegirl, thank you for this information. My Vitamin D level was pretty high probably due to too many supplements as I am also fighting Osteopenia, trying to prevent it from going to Osteoporous. So I have been looking for higher Vitamin D levels in supplements I take. I recently (two weeks ago) stopped taking some of the supplements containing the higher doses of Vitamin D and have noticed a milder almost non-existence form of my Rosacea which I was diagnosed in December of last year. Coincidence maybe? We will see if my skin continues its remission by me staying off the excess of Vitamin D. Thank you.

It is such an individual condition. My husband has had quite severe rosacea for the past 15+ yrs. He was using oral abx and Metro Gel, then a topical abx. He had several laser tx and it would get better than flare up at odd times.
We moved here over a year ago and he plays golf 5x a week average. He is not using any of those products any longer. He has not had a flare since we moved here and he only uses a clear zinc suncreen 70% on his nose.
It hadn't even occurred to me that he has not had a flare up, until I read this thread. We just talked about it and he confirmed that he has quit all of his meds. His skin looks pretty good! (for a rugged manly man)
No rhyme or reason!

Have it also. Worse in humidity so stay in water or air in summer. Wine flares it up, along with spicy foods. I won't take meds for it. Just use metro gels and creams.

My husband started using Eucerin Redness Relief cleanser & lotion a few years back which works better than the Rx's he had been using!

Same here, I started Eucerin a year ago and an all natural product from Canada called Zax's. I'm much better living here then in NC where I felt like hiding much of the time. I have given up most wheat and white flour, and yeast and that has also made a significant difference. In fact if I eat anything with yeast my face looks like it's sunburnt.
