Husband was driving in golf cart towards Spanish Springs and 4-5 jets flew over at record low altitude. I heard it at my Piedmont house and looked out the windows but didn't see anything. It sounded like it was just over my roof top. Any thoughts?

Heard 3 of the jets but only saw 1. It was very low over Amelia. Never ever did I see any this low at that altitude.

OMG - right over the house in Mallory, everything shook! You could almost see the pilots they were so low.

Several neighbors went out and saw that last one go over. My neighbor tells me they were A10 Warthogs.

We're not that far -- as jets fly -- from several military installations.

Nearest A-10 squadron is in Valdosta, GA. Low and slow is how they go. I saw a USAF convoy on Saturday down by Howie in the Hills. Must be an exercise near by.

There are also a couple practice ranges for bombing including areas of the Ocala National Forest and along the St. Johns river. If he were A10's I suspect they were practicing low level support in conjunction with ground exercises someplace. Remember that the sound of those jets is the sound of FREEDOM.

Very low over Mallory as well. So low, that I was laying down on my bed and could see them approaching through the window long before they reached my house. The first one I thought was thunder, but then saw the others as they approached.
I'm no expert, but to me they were full on flying. My guess is they came out of Leesburg airport. Would love to find out more details.

There is a practice bombing range that is located in the Ocala National Forest. They drop non-active bombs there at targets for training purposes. Maybe that's where they were heading.

Yep KathieI,
I would say they were full on flying. Just glad they weren't firing as they went by.

They were 4 A-10's.....I was trying to take a nap but the noise of my grass growing kept me awake so I was outside getting ready to mow when 4 flew over. Gave me goosebumps. Love those guys - NO record low level flight either. You should have HELL scared out of you if you DON'T see them anymore. Pentagon wants them out of the inventory to be replaced by F-35's. Yeah I miss the fighter business. :super:

Closer to truth than fiction. I caught many rides on Army choppers from Frankfurt to Stuttgart and every one of them diverted over the same nudist camp...even the one assigned to a four star general.
Scared the heck out of me....the first flew over, then two more, then the final one. They seemed to be going too fast for airport approach...and they seemed just a tad too low.
Don't know why they were flying here at such a low altitude, curious enough to want to know...;)

When I lived up North, we were in the landing flight path for ABE (Lehigh Valley) airport. I got very used to seeing airlines line up on my front window (landing lights) and then turn 90 degrees and head to the airport. Saw and heard several A-10s over the house, I think they did practice landings at the airport. No complaints, I support our armed forces.

I saw three of them because I was in the pool. Noise was deafening and they were flying very low indeed. Their wings slanted back and perhaps because they were so low the speed seemed phenomenal.

We were in the Hadley pool when they flew over. The first one really scared us as we didn't see it coming and it was so loud and then so low we thought it was crashing. But then saw each one approaching The Villages and headed Northwest. We speculated that they may have taken off from Leesburg airport as they were so low.
And, yes, that is the sound of Freedom!! Reminded us of watching the Blue Angels in Pensacola!!

Inquiring minds want to know - how low is record low altitude?
Per FAR regulation Sec. 91-119, the definition from Wikipedia is - In aviation (particularly in air navigation), lowest safe altitude (LSALT) is an altitude that is at least 1,000 feet above any obstacle or terrain within a defined safety buffer region around a particular route that a pilot might fly. The safety buffer allows for errors in the air by including an additional area that a pilot might stray into by flying off track. By flying at or above this altitude a pilot complies with terrain clearance requirements on that particular flight leg.
Were there 2 different groups of aircraft? Some reports were of A-10 Warthogs (which cannot sweep back the wings); other reports were of aircraft with swept back wings. Warthogs are fixed-wing tank killing machines.

Flying low and slow is what they do. They are ground support aircraft and the Army loves them. The Air Force not so much because they have to fly low and slow for their mission of killing tanks. This is annual training time for the National Guard and Air Force Reserve. That that might be why they were in the area. Love them!

They were coming back from the Leesburg airport providing escort service for the Morse jets. Family must be back from their lion hunting safari in Africa.

The A-10 is about as quiet as a fighter can be. If they got this much reaction because of the noise there would probably be numerous heart attacks if any fast moving fighters ever passed over in a similar manner. Jet noise is the sound of freedom and I also miss the days of flying fighters.
