With the rainy season coming upon us believe it or not, those rain gutters you try so hard to maintain are contributing to a serious drainage problem. Rain gutters collect water falling over the entire surface area of your roof, channel it through downspouts and deposit it at concentrated areas close to your home. This rainwater then soaks into the ground and will collect near the base of your home in the soil beneath your home’s foundation. When protecting the value and usability of your property from water damage our goal is to capture excess water with a French Drain system, move it away from your home and then disperse it in a safe manner. If you do not immediately address water drainage issues you expose yourself to property damage, reduced functionality of your yard, health issues and “surprise” repair costs later. Careful, folks. If your yard is graded properly, and your downspouts and roof gutters are installed properly, they are not contributing to a serious drainage problem, they are helping you avoid a serious drainage problem.

Of course you may have a drainage problem. Just make sure you know why before jumping to any conclusions.

I had a French drain installed last month to correct a bad drainage problem in between my house and next door neighbors. Everything is draining properly now.

If done properly, those downspouts feed into a splash block that drains away from the home or are connected to a corrugated tube underground that takes the water away from the home. The gutters aren't the problem - where they dump the water is.

Could you tell us approximately how much this cost including re-sodding which I am assuming would be necessary? Also, who installed yours? I am about to start getting quotes for one in the back and one on one side.

My French drain was hand dug two foot wide and three foot deep. They went down deep enough to to get to sandy dirt and took a large trailer load of clay out of the ditch. Clay will not drain water. They connected the downspout to the underground black pipe that runs between the houses to the curb.
We all know how muc rain we've had the last three weeks and the drain worked just fine.

If all the landscaping was done properly many of these houses south of 466a with clay filled yards that were not grated properly would not be having this problem. I formerly lived in Amelia, their yards was much more sandy. You could dig a hole there without a shovel.
