What makes Game of Thrones so popular is its character and story line developments. And a huge budget doesn't hurt. Here is a scene from season 5 episode 9 (spoiler alert) involving Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons.

That's probably the most dramatic scene of the whole Series so far. Thanks for that link.

You may like HBO's Rome if you like Game of Thrones. This is from around 2005 and 2006 and centers around the struggle for the leadership of Rome around 44 through 33 BC. Caesar, Pompey, Marc Anthony and Octavian are some of the main characters but it is ultimately about two Roman soldiers and their experiences while they live through the battle for supremacy between these men and their extended families.

Rome has a few actors who are also in Game of Thrones. Rome : Season 1 - Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/rome/s01/) Rome : Season 2 - Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/rome/s02/)
