Salt Water Pool Question

I'm assuming that salt water pools would be very similar to swimming in an ocean. i'm very sensitive to salt and can't swim in the ocean. Can salt water pools be converted to a chorline pool?

Sable, most people think they have a salt water pool because they use salt in their system. The salt they use is to produce chlorine and I doubt that there is any real salt water pools in The Villages. As a kid swimming in hotel pools in Miami Beach we experienced salt water pools that were actually pumped from the ocean. When you dried off you had that salty sticky feeling because it was really salt water.

Can salt water pools be converted to a chlorine pool?Your assumption is incorrect. The concentration of salt in the water of a saltwater pool is about 1/10th to 1/12th as salty as the ocean. There are most likely others who can answer this better than I, but since no one has responded yet, I will try.

When you say a salt water pool, I assume you mean a swimming pool that has a salt water chlorinator. This is not the same as swimming in the ocean. The salt concentration is about that of human tears. The water does not taste uncomfortably salty, as long as the system is running properly.

Basically the chlorinator takes the salt in the water, (Sodium Chloride) and uses the Chloride, (Chlorine) to sanitize the pool, then returns it back to Sodium Chloride. It does this on a continual basis.

Usually this water is much more friendly to your skin, etc, as the concentration is only high near the process itself...away from you....the actual pool water is better than when a person dumps a large amount of Chlorine in a pool as when they shock it, etc. I have seen pools where the Chlorine is over 10 ppm. In a salt water chlorinator pool it is no where near that.

I suggest you find a neighbor who takes good care of his salt water generator pool and ask if you can try swimming in it. I think you will find it a very pleasant experience....nothing like the ocean.

Sable99, everyone above is correct. Yes it initially uses salt and then maintains it at about 3000 parts per million. So very very low salt content. My pool is new, 4 months old, maintained by T&D still as part of contract, and your welcome to jump in and see first hand.

No, the "salt water" pools are NOT like swimming in the ocean. The salt level in the pool is not even detectable by taste. If you would like to try one, please PM me and you can come to my house and swim to see if the water affects your skin.

I would not want a pool unless it was a saltwater pool. I had a saltwater pool for over 10 years before I moved here and there is nothing like it. It is less expensive to maintain and a hell of a lot less work.

When we put our pool in opted for plain old chlorine cheap no generator to go bad (they are not cheap) water is crystal clear . Get the feeder adjust right and never touch it again. Yea you have to load the tablets every so often but you dont have to do anything else. Dont let anyone feed you a line. I maintained a hotel pool for a long time just so you know. Learn how to take care of it yourself its easy.
