Anybody know where we can get a good hot sliced beef sandwich...provolone cheese and au jus??? Where we lived in Cape Coral, FL they had a place that had a "chicago style beef" that fit the bill. In Philly we had Tavern hot beef sandwiches, usually sliced at the bar, with the provolone and au jus. Basically the same thing. My husband just mentioned that's one thing he misses here and had a hankering (?) for. Any ideas??

The closest thing there is around here that somewhat compares to Philly is what they call French dip. I think it was at McCallister's that I have had a decent one.

Excellent french dip at both City Fire restaurants.

If you want Italian beef and gravy, Publix carries Papa John's italian beef. It's precooked with plenty of gravy and you can heat up on the microwave. It's $8.99 for 15 oz but on sale quite often. Add your own cheese and bread and you are set to go.

Thanks for the responses. French dip is a thinner cut beef, much like a cheese steak. This beef is sliced fairly thick and is usually served on a round kaiser roll. I can make it myself, certainly, but what fun would that be??:1rotfl:

The couple of times I've had the French dip sandwich at City Fire in Brownwood, the beef was definitely cut thicker. May not be exactly what you're trying to replace, but the sandwich was quite good.

Lighthouse in Lake Sumter has a great roast beef sandwich - just ask for au jus.

One of my neighbors is from Pennsylvania and they just told us about a week ago that they have had the BEST Philly Cheesesteak they have ever had at Derrell's Diner next to Square 1 burgers in Pinellas. I personally have not had it but I will be trying it soon based on this recommendation from our neighbor. Hope this helps.

You might give Cody's French Dip sandwich in LSL a try.

Mary and I just celebrated my 70th by flying to Chicago going to the Shedd the Art Museum and the Chinese artifact exhibition at the Field Museum. My birthday dinner at Portillos, consisting of Chicago Beefs and Chicago Dogs was the capper of a beautiful weekend. I agree we need a real Chicago Beef and Dog House.

I have no idea what a Chicago Style roast beef sandwich is like, but this thread has made me want to head to New Orleans and get a debris poboy at Parkway Bakery and Tavern.

I love Dippity Duey's on HWY 301 by Exterior Spaces Landscaping. On Wednesdays, they serve the King Louie with homemade Au Jus. On Tuesday they serve a killer Rueben also. Here is their facebook link, https://www.facebook.com/DippityDuey/timeline

Wasn't there a chicago beef/hot dog place on 466 a few years back that lasted about a year or so? I believe it had a yellow taxi parked in their parking lot?..or was i dreaming?:D

Picked up a Philly Cheese for my husband today at Darrell's. He said it was very good...not Philly (of course), but very good. :)
