Nanci, I'm assuming you are presently using Magic Jack. Do you like it?

I use Magic Jack. You need to have high speed broadband for it to work well. I have tried it on DSL, and the lower cost comcast option and it breaks up. But with the highest speed available (also most expensive) it works very well. All options work, voice mail is great as it sends a wav file to my e-mail. So you listen on the phone or on your computer.

Its not clear there will be no charge since the 352 Area Code is listed as Gainesville on the MagicJack site. From some previous responses on this Forum asking if all calls in the same area code were free no matter where the area code was originally from were free > the responses seemed to indicate that calling a Gainesville 352 AREA CODE from the villages could very well be a long distance call? I don't really know for sure > I'm just passing on the information.

I wish there were all free since I use Magic Jack in the villages.

I thought Magic Jack is portable? I thought you could use it at any internet connected computer, no? I have it, but haven't tried moving it around. My son installed it for me, so I don't know if there were any specifics about the "home" machine. I am expecting to port it with me when I snow-bird so my home number is always the same. Isn't that how it works?

Magic Jack is portable. Just the number is not. The number remains the same as when you first install it. I move mine with me where ever I go. Use it from hotels, vacations, home, villages, etc. Any where I can access high speed broadband and have my laptop works fine. The phone number remains the same. Many hotels today have free wireless. So I just unplug the room phone and plug it into the magic jack. Free calling.

One issue I fail to understand is why you need a 352 area code. Today almost no one pays for long distance any more. And within 2 years there will be no long distance phone billing. Most cell phones long distance is the same as local and most home phone plans have unlimited calling to anywhere in the US. All VOIP services, vonage, skype, magic jack, comcast, and most others have zero long distance billing already for a fixed monthly fee. Magic Jack just happens to be the cheapest. $39 for the first year and $20 a year after for as many long distance calls as you can make. So who cares if you have a 352 area code or not. Best feature is voice mail shows up in email and I just play message on laptop.

Thanks, that's exactly what I thought and one of the key reasons why I wanted it - so wherever I am folks can reach me on that number.

I too haven't had a plan where I paid long distance in many years, so I don't understand the issue of the area code either. Mine will stay a 407 number.

Could be, but if they do they are wasting money.* Most phone componies have a plan with unlimited calling for $29 a month.* Comcast triple play gives unlimited calling for $33 a month.* And yes Magic Jack, $20 a year with unlimited long distance.* By buying a high speed broadband connection which is $42 a month in TV, for $20 a year I pay no long distance.* My cell phone with AT&T has unlimited calling.* So there are many options that everyone should explore.* Maybe thats a new business idea Redwitch.* Help people reduce phone cost for a % of the first years savings.*

We just got magic jack and using it ith a three station wireless phone. We are finding that the reception is very fuzzy and echoes. Not sure if its the phones or magic jack [ we are connected thru comcast ] does anyone have similar experiences or ideas. Thanks Steve

With the MJ connected to your computer, try lowering the volume on your computer; got rid of the static on our line.

If everyone who has Magic Jack would use a little common sense you can work around the long distance charges. When someone calls you and they don't have unlimited long distance then have them hang up and "you" call them right back and they would only be charged for 1 minute of long distance. Magic Jack works and saves you money every day. It is not a fix all for everyone else who does not have unlimited long distance, it is a way for you to save money.

We use vonage....we have to carry the blue box with us where ever we go for a long period of time if we want to use it....but we have a NY number and a 352 number....both ring into the same line....the 352 number is called a virtual number. For $30 a month we get 2 numbers....voicemail, sent to email, call forwarding...so if we want to have it forwarded to our cell phones...and many other features....not a bad deal at all.

The only issue I have with either is that when comcast is down....so are the phones.

Have been using MJ for quite a while now and love it. Have 2 numbers (a 407 and a 202), using the 407 as the "home" number and the 202 for some other stuff.

When on the road between "homes" I can program the numbers to ring directly to my cellphones. Upon arrival at "home du jour" I just change the settings to ring at the house.

Am not concerned that when ComCast is out, so is MJ. In those rare circumstances, the hard-wire phone is usually out as well. Cellphones then become the phone-of-use anyway, and access to anyone's working computer would let me reprogram my MJ number to forward to my cellphone for the time being.

I agree with the post that the "352-xyz" MJ exchange may not be local to TV. That knowledge would require knowing what the "xyz" is that the MJ 352 uses, followed by a call to Verizon to ask whether a call to that 352-xyz is a toll call from TV.

I have to admit being less concerned with others enduring long-distance or toll charges than with what phone service costs me. I can't control what others do or pay for phone service, but would always suggest they look into such reduced-cost options as MJ.

Just tried it with one of my MJs plugged into an Acer Aspire One (WiFi connection). Worked with no problem.

It is $39 for the unit itself and the first years service. After that it is $20 for each years service.

I have been using Magicjack since last year on and off here in the Villages and decided to switch to a 352 area code they now offer - thinking I wouldn't have to dial the 352 area code for numbers here in The Villages or others wouldn't have to dial it to call me. But I still have to dial the 352 area code to call others in the villages and others need to use it to call me! Oh well at least the area code change was free and is easier to remember then the other area code I had.

As mentioned before the quality is a lot better then our verizon cell phone here in the village of Caroline. I'm using a wifi connection to my laptop.

Still think its a real bargain!

I've got 2 MJs. I needed two numbers so one MJ is connected to the base computer and the other one is on-the-shelf except when I plug it into the notebook while travelling. While on-the-shelf I have that MJ's number's calls forwarded to the other MJ, so they both ring onto one phone. Also, when the situation arises I program both MJs to forward calls to the cellphone(s). So far, it has been working well this way.

Changing your MJ Phone number is easy and the first time it's free (next time its $10)

1.Go to my.magicjack.com
2.input your phone number then go to change phone number.
3.Here you pick the area code you want and the prefix (theres a choice of about 5 but none are TheVillages prefix)
Press enter and it happens and your calls will be fowarded for 30 days from your previous number.

BTW -Another thing I've noticed is that when I called a number the call was cutting in and out. I recalled that number a few times to see if it would change with the same results. I restarted my laptop and again retried it and the call was now very good. There are times when some things can be going on in you computer / laptop taking cpu cycles that will make the call sound choppy but at least in my case a reboot solved the problem. Most calls sound fine.
