Black Mass*(2015) - Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/black_mass_2015/)

I would love to see some reviews of this before I go see it. I went to The Visit last week on its opening day just so that the surprise M. Night Shyamalan often puts in his movies would not be spoiled. Black Mass though based on a true story does not look like it will have many twists that you do not know are already coming.

What's your review of The Visit? I hadn't heard of it but just watched the trailer. Creepy.

It was one of M. Night Shyamalan's better movies. Not as good as The Sixth Sense but very few movies are. Not as bad as some of his other ones like the one with the mermaid-- Lady in the Water.

Saw Black Mass and liked it. Based on the story of Whitey Bulger, you can expect it is violent, gory and filled with foul language. If you can handle that type movie of a real life gangster, you'll probably like this film. Johnny Depp did an excellent job in the lead role.

We went to see this movie last night. As my wife is from Massachusetts and I'ved there as well we understood the story behind Whitey Bulger. I've seen Johnny Depp in a lot of movies, in various roles and in this movie I couldn't believe it was him.

We loved it because we're from MA and were teens in the 60's when the gang wars started. Very familiar with the Bulger story and the "Winter Hill" gang.
Very impressed with Johnny Depp. Incredible makeup job and huge talent.
Lots of "F" words though.

I agree you lost Johnny Depp in that very creepy role. What a scumbag that man is/was. I mean Whitey Bulger. James "Whitey" Bulger | Life on Alcatraz - Page 1 (http://www.alcatrazhistory.com/bulger.htm)

Dont waste your time, alll shooting in back head bloody, gang killings almost all scenes. I got nothing out of it. No real line other than killings. i see no point in watching it . my opinion . Had i known would not gone. Just because its based on a true story doesn't mean anything to me anymore.

Has some really good acting. If you like true crime books and novels you should like this. It is bloody but not like many of the more hard core violent movies out there in 2015.

I did not know much about Whitey Bulger before seeing "Black Mass" other than he was a crime boss from Boston and was a fugitive for many years before being captured in 2011.

First rate cast all around from Johnny Depp to the actors portraying the FBI agents working in the Boston FBI office. Especially good is Joel Edgerton, who plays John Connolly, an FBI agent who grew up in South Boston and crosses ethical and legal lines in his dealings with Whitey Bulger.

As noted by other posters, there is a lot of violence and profanity in "Blaok Mass." But the acting is excellent.

FYI, Whitey is currently about 10 miles from The Villages at Coleman Federal Prison.
With so many Villagers who lived in the Boston area during Whitey's era, did anyone have any experience with him...maybe even as a cop, FBI, etc.?

My son was an extra in the movie. He's a Lexington Minuteman, they were marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade scene. He and his son left after his screen time. Thought the movie dragged a bit, but they did love all the Boston area scenes and Johnny Depp's portrayal of Whitey.
We lived in Boston then, it was interesting to say the least. You had Whitey doing his thing and his brother was a high profile political figure in Boston.
We'll wait for it to come out on Netflix or wherever.

How interesting -- thank you for posting that info. about Whitey's new residence in the big house for life being only about 10 miles from The Villages. He is 86 years old and getting 3 hots and a cot courtesy of the taxpayers. His former girlfriend, Catherine Grieg, who is 64 and was captured with him in Santa Monica, CA, is serving an 8 year sentence in a federal correctional facility in Waseca, Minnesota.
