View Full Version : Coolers in the Squares

I have heard coolers are not allowed in the squares during performances. Is that a yea but it is not enforced? I like ice cold beer but don't like large containers. With a cooler I could have several 7 OZ ponies iced down in a very small cooler.
Just curious

Maybe you could rest the cooler on a seat to save it. That way they can decide which rule to enforce.:1rotfl:

Why don't you try it and see? You mentioned you like your beer by your pool. How's your puppy?

Would cooler full of beer out of the plastic 6 pack be considered open container. I wouldn't want to be traveling around with cooler full of alcohol out of the container? At least if you drink there they can't count how many you've had, unless you drink 6 at time:wine:
Course unless on the way home you run stop signs, speed, meander around, flip your cart, or pull your ballbat! :loco:

We have friends who were sitting in a golf cart at Sumter Landing listening to the music. They were drinking beer. They were ticketed by the police for open container. Drinking it in the square might be ok because it is not public property.

Were they cited because they had open alcohol in a motor vehicle, as opposed to sitting on the curb, or is there a prohibition against open alcohol in general on public property in Florida or Sumter County?

You certainly can be ticketed if you are just drinking a beer or whatever while sitting in your parked cart on the public street. Violation of open container law.
I bring a small cooler bag to the squares sometimes with a couple cans of beer in it. No problem. Basically, it is glass bottles that they do not allow.
Same thing on the golf courses. Since the golf courses are private property, there is no prohibition from having a can of beer open in your cart.

Usually at a place that sells drinks they don't let you bring in your own. In fact, some might consider it cheap and tacky.

It is. But it's also cheap and tacky to require purchases be made from a vendor monopoly at double the usual price, as in movie theaters and sports stadiums. Then again, their venue, their rules.

It means that the beer bottle and or Can is open not the meaning of being out of the plastic rings.

Most golf carts have a small cooler attached to the golf cart. That small cooler will hold enough to get you over the alcohol limit. I see residents going to their golf cart all the time and then drinking their beer on the Square as they dance or just listen to the music.
Just don't drink it in your cart as you may pay a fine!

Nah resting it on a seat and the rule would not be enforced. You might get conked over the head by a irate seat saver though. I would think the refrigerated bags would be less obvious than the actual coolers. My wife would empty her purse and carry a 12 pack.

You cannot sit in your golf cart and drink a beer but you can walk around and get completely blitzed if ya want.
I do BYOB in a shoulder bag type cooler. I refuse to stand in line for 20 minutes to get a beer.

You're talking about bringing a cooler down to the square with several 7 - ouncers? Hope we don't encounter you driving a golf cart on your way home. Best to stay home with your refrigerator. I'll support the Bait Shacks with a couple of beers and then go home.

First of all let them try to define what a "cooler" is. And second, what if I had a "cooler" filled with cans of ginger ale or bottled water. What are they going to do about it anyway? You're not breaking any laws.

state law. you are allowed in the square but not in the street. bringing a cooler is tacky. you are getting free entertainment you can at least support it by buying relatively cheap beer from the bars on the square.

Taking a cooler into the square with your own drinks is like taking your own drinks into a restaurant. They sell drinks at the square so you aren't supposed to bring your own.
If you bring your own, leave the cooler in your golf cart, then go back to fill up your cup.

OK, so let me see if I have this straight.
1) I can buy a beer at a kiosk, but I dare not step out of the private square onto the public street or I can be cited. Likewise, I cannot take it to my cart or I get cited.
2) I can bring a cooler of unopened beer, and try to conceal it, open it covertly in the square, but as in #1, not cross the boundaries of the square. I do this at the risk of being cheap and tacky, and possibly violating an announced "rule" that is not enforced
3) I can bring any cooler, use it openly, and just flaunt the unenforced "rule"
4) I can bring unopened beer in my cart cooler, go back to get one when wanted, come back to the square and open it there
5) Unlike one post implied, I cannot bring it in my cart and sit in a chair on the public street and drink it
6) I can follow Tom into the movie theater, at risk of getting cited crossing the street, where they probably will enforce their rules
7) Most importantly, if I get up to go to the Kiosk while my wife stays where she is, is that considered "saving a seat"
Looks like the "rules" were written by a federal bureaucrat

For few of us that don't drink but have balance and slurred speech problems due to brain tumor it's problem. They think we are drunk or on something.

Thanks to all that responded. I have considered the comments and I have came up with a solution for me.
No cooler as I had a vision of hundreds of coolers and that is not a good look.
My problem is my beer getting warm before I can finish it.
Solution: I will try an insulated coffee style mug to put the beer from the corner bar into allowing a longer time before it gets warm.

It's my understanding businesses pay for entertainment. Looking at your large caps for "FREE", let's not forget, there are a lot of wages that go with the squares. The drink servers, bringing the chairs in, cleaning up the mess that people leave, taking the chairs out, etc. That's quite a few man hours for several people. :beer3:

Myth #6: Beer should be served ice-cold for best flavor
This is an unfortunate myth perpetuated by the major commercial breweries especially for their lite beers. The fact is, flavor typically diminishes when beer is served ice-cold. It may make for a thirst-quenching, refreshing beverage, but often bears little resemblance to traditional beer. Several beers are, in fact, best served much closer to room temperature or slightly cool and are considered undrinkable when icy cold such as Guinness and many of the traditional English ales.

I think heading to or from an entertainment venue with a cooler on a golf cart probably qualifies as probable cause in and of itself. If not, I'll bet the officer will tell you he spotted you driving erratically. Why would you ever want to get in a p!$$!ng match with a law enforcement officer?

People bring coolers to the Squares and talk openly about it. I don't care - live and let live.
But it's often the same people that have loudly protested about some other rule being broken or some resident's lawn ornament.

I was at Spanish Springs Town Square yesterday at about 2:00. There were probably 50 or sixty seats with seat cushions towels ribbons etc on them. I walked by one of the employees who was standing there looking at them.
Why aren't these guys given the authority to enforce the rules. At the very least, he should have told people who were saving seats that it's not allowed. They should also have the authority and responsibility to walk around and remove any seat saving devices.
