During our visit in October, we would like to have use of a computer for checking in on the forum and other info. We don't have a laptop to bring with us. Would there be access to a computer in any of the centers?

If we bring a laptop with us, does the Library have an open system so I can use my laptop and where else can one use a laptop?

I was told that with a laptop you can receive the Library's wifi out in the parking lot. I didn't bring my laptop when I was in TV last so I cannot confirm this. Perhaps, someone can, though.

k2, I'm assuming your laptop has wifi. Depending on your neighborhood, the odds are pretty high that someone will have an unsecured router near you. If secured, just knock on a couple of doors and I'm willing to bet they'd be happy to put in their password on your laptop (you don't have to see it -- they can type it in).

And if that doesn't work, Chrispers, Dunkin' Donuts, Panera Bread, and many other places have free wi-fi that I have accessed from their parking lot...

Mintjulep,
I'm not a resident, yet, so would you mind replying and letting me know where Dunkin' donuts and Panera Bread are located? Are they on 466?

Also, Denny's off of 441. I believe Starbucks in both squares. There are many wifi spots. The biggest problem is that all but Denny's close early. And, yes, Chrisper's, Dunkin are off of 466.
Wow, I did not believe that there was so much wifi capability in the Villages! I don't believe that I have the nerve to ask a neighbor if I can steal there internet capability for 3 months by piggybacking off theirs though. I know to offer them some remuneration for using their system is illegal. Perhaps, I will just use one of the other legal sites.

I'd just start by seeing if there's an unsecured network available from your house. Honestly, I think most wouldn't mind if you piggybacked. I know I don't and have set up my neighbor's puter to use my router when she's here for her 5 months. It doesn't cost me a thing extra and, so long as I know so that I can make my laptop a tad more secure, I'm happy to help her out.
That's one of the nicer things about TV, people really do want to help each other out and be good neighbors.

Try getting my wifi signal from Mallory rec center, it's open.

Paneras is in Spanish Springs. Dunkin Donuts is on 466 in Southern Trace.

k2at, Chrispers and Dunkin' are both in the Southern Trace shopping center on 466.
I have accessed the Chrispers wifi from their side parking lot even when they were closed.
And as zcaveman says, Panera is in Spanish Springs.
I've accessed from their side parking lot also.

I really don't think that is a good idea, it's even illegal in some states. It's not that most people wouldn't "mind", most people wouldn't "know" that their connection is being piggybacked.

Just my thoughts, that if anyone leaves their wireless router unsecured they really are NOT concerned about "piggybackers". If you really want to be a nice neighbor tell them its unsecured and if they mind that you use it and maybe even offer to split the bill or give them a gift certificate at Christmas time.

Leaving a wireless network unsecured opens Pandora's box. Uninvited concurrent users lessen the speed at which you can browse, upload, download, etc. Perhaps, the bigger issue is that anyone on the net can potentially (if they know how) see and access the contents of your drive(s).
If you want to allow a neighbor to access your secure network, simply add their computer to the network as a recognized user. See your online help for instructions.
