View Full Version : What's The Deal With The Bonita Gate?

There are some real idiots that use the inbound Bonita Gate on Canal St. Honestly, this gate cannot stay up for more than 12 hours until some idiot runs into it, knocks it off the control box and damages the gate. It takes 2-3 days to get fixed at a substantial cost to TV. This gate has been knocked down 3 times in the last week alone. Literally up no more than 12 hours each time before it is destroyed again. Now how can any car or cart driver not see this gate? I know there are cameras mounted but not sure how effective they are. I only hope the idiots that are running through the gates are getting caught and are getting fined for the repairs.

Ive been here going on 9 years and can say I haven`t even come close to hitting any gate.Am I that good a driver?????Or maybe just maybe its because I don`t consume alcohol. If these people have to start paying for the repairs I bet that would cure some of the gate hitting.

Seriously? It's almost unbelievable. Here are some suggestions:
1) Paint the whole gate and mechanics with glow in the dark neon paint
2) Steal some lights from Yankee stadium and illuminate the area, like with 20 million volts
3) speed bumps----12 inches high and every 2 feet (we could call them moguls)
4) Pay a consultant $6500 to see if side striping the gate arm would help
5) replace the gate arm with a high powered laser---will eliminate recidivism
among gate crashers
6) Man the gate with security guards armed with RPGs
7) Put up a "No U turn" sign---then these people will probably make one
8) Wrap the gate arm with razor wire
9) 24 hour coverage by armed drones
10) a gate arm that emits a low level EMP when in the down position, kills all carts within 6 feet

Could be gate malfunction? some gates are squirrelly especially in storms with lightening.
How about just remove the gates. IMO any gates on thru streets needs to be removed. If you want to slow traffic down put some speed bumps (BIG SPEED) bumps. Gates are oxymoron's when all you got to do is just push the button, don't keep anybody out anyway. I could see maybe gates into villas or housing areas but on main artery streets?
NO I am NOT MOVING for those who want to say "don't like then MOVE:girlneener: I don't have to like everything:wine:

I noticed it was slow to rise after swiping the card.It could also be the horrible repaving job.

Gategate again. I'm an old insurance guy and you would be surprised how many times we were told the tree came right in front of me.
If you have lived here any appreciable time you know drivers methods and why they ended up taking down a gate or portion of the structure.
One thing seems to be clear that "proceed with caution"never enters the equation.
We must thank God that the only thing that gets really hurt are people's feelings
Have a good day

or a taser gate
Not on all of them. That would be mean. You just keep moving one around.

Randomly. To quote the 40 year old 7-up uncola commercial--"One never knows, does one?"

Maybe it wasn't fixed properly to begin with.

This last few times the gate was removed so the repaving, new lane markers etc. could be completed. But yes I do agree there are WAY to many gates being broken. Witnessed a near miss the other day with a piggyback driver. The gate started down as he rushed thru it. Was hoping it would have hit his windshield but no such luck. All I can say is slow down, there is no rush period.

If The Villages installs Bollards at the gates that have the most frequent damage, it would cool the jets of the impatient people rushing thru :)

The Bonita and Hemingway gates have had problems since day one. I really don't think it is a matter of the gate being hit all the time so much as it is a defective gate in this instance. But having gates on Canal Street really is a dumb idea.

I ALMOST hit a gate. Early in the morning sun so bright I could not see it for the glare. Since I knew it was there I stopped just in time.

All of the gates that I've driven through have a sensor that raises the gate of a car or golf cart is going under it. If it's coming down and you rush through it, it will go back up.
Maybe some people are going through so fast that it doesn't have time to go back up.
But whatever is causing the problem, how about encasing the arms in foam, like a Nerf bat, and having them attached in a way that they can simply be reattached with any fuss. Kind of a breakaway gate.

Fixed at 8:00 am 09/30, down by noon 9/30. Would love to see the videos recorded on this gate online. Is there any other gates in TV that get hit as often as this one?

Watch this gate crashing piece from some news station---it's very informative.
