What is with these idiots that continue to bring their dogs to the Squares when there is a major event like last night at Lake Sumter? Do they really think they are doing the poor dog a favor by confining them in a crowded atmosphere, not to mention encounters with other dogs? I am certain the dog would prefer to be home in an air conditioned, quiet environment than subjected to the large crowds at the Squares. Not sure if these folks are starved for attention or just ignorant as to what is best for their supposed beloved animal.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing people walking their dogs when I take my morning walk and often stop to chat and pet them, but a crowded event like at the Square is to place for animals of any kind.
I must say that I didn't particularly enjoy watching a dog urinate 5 feet from where I was eating my Italian sausage, but chalked it up to the owner being a moron and not the dog. He was just doing what dogs do.

I have a happy dog story.
I teed off at 6:08 on Okichchachobie [or whatever] and it goes to the dog park be fore it loops back. All those dogs looked like they were have the time of their life. It was a pick-up match and the woman I met told me that she takes her dog there and now in the morning, every day when she gets up the dog is giving her "Can we go today? look".

I had a German Shepherd for 15 years. Why would I need to hire a dog sitter for a couple of hours at the Square? Ridiculous!

Some nights, I have to find new seats because I am highly allergic to dogs. So many times I go to a new place then someone else comes along and sits their dog in a chair close to me. I once politely asked a woman, after I had to move three times that night, if she would not sit her dog in the chair next to me. I explained my allergy. She was rabidly offended. So she moved to a chair right behind me. Sigh.

Also agree 100%. Love my dog but would never subject her to the chaos of a crowded square! Can you imagine the view at their level...a thousand legs...would make anyone nervous. Also don't understand people who bring there dogs to the farmers market or another event during the heat of the day. Have they ever felt how hot that pavement is? They wouldn't take their shoes off but don't mind there dog to walk on that hot pavement. Some dog lover!

I would like to see dogs banned from the squares, not because I don't like dogs but because the squares are for the enjoyment of people and there are many people who are allergic to animal dander and it is not a safe environment for the animals either. If you want to be seen with your dog, take him/her for a walk, not where other people are trying to enjoy entertainment.

I love dogs & I've had dogs but having a pet means boarding them when you go on vacation is expensive & not fair to your pet. As far as having them in the town squares it doesn't really make me any difference just as long as the owner or should I say as long as the dog keeps the owner out of resturants & other stores with Fido. If Fido wants to come just keep walking until Fido gets tired then take him or her home then come back & eat in your favorite resturant. Dogs really don't care if they're home or what they're doing. Be courteous to your pet because not everyone wants to show their love for your pet! I'm really surprise that so many people feel this way about animals that it really bothers them to see a dog in the squares!

:doggie::doggie::doggie: While I agree with the hot pavement worry for dogs I'm not so sure it's such a bad experience for the dogs. Dogs are social pack animals and are used to their point of view and quite capable of being in crowds. Most dogs I see are wagging their tails and enjoying all the attention and dare I say it, better behaved then some humans.

Really? You are certain dogs would prefer being home than with their owners? You don't know much about dogs do you? I am certain that it's none of your business where I bring my dogs, since they are my dogs not your dogs. For the record I don't bring my dogs to events on the squares, but I certainly don't care if other people do.

I would like to see dogs banned from the squares, not because I don't like dogs but because the squares are for the enjoyment of people ............

We moved to The Villages in 2007 because we liked the fact that it is a very dog friendly community. It's part of the unique ambiance of The Villages. We've only taken our dogs to the Squares twice in eight years, but we appreciate that we are allowed to take them. We've taken them on a cool night when it wasn't busy. The dogs were delighted to be there, and since people lined up to pat them, I don't think all people want to see dogs banned!

............. Dogs are social pack animals and are used to their point of view and quite capable of being in crowds. Most dogs I see are wagging their tails and enjoying all the attention and dare I say it, better behaved then some humans. :agree:

Dogs should be banned from the square for the safety of people and the dogs. Of course if you are so lost without your 4 legged friend you can always put it in one of those ridiculous doggie carriages. Just make sure the dog urinates in the carriage instead of the decorative flower beds around the square.

Dogs should be banned from the square for the safety of people and the dogs. Should young children also be banned? I don't think so.
Yet I've often seen young children running around the dance floors, unsupervised.
And at Brownwood one night there was a baby crawling around the dance floor.
Perhaps the answer is that everyone should be more accountable for the safety of their dogs and kids.

I think folks should just mind there own business. There are so few dogs at the squares that it isn't even an issue.
I believe a few posters aren't happy unless they can post something negative( you know who you are)......spend a few minutes looking for the good in situations instead of always looking for the negative. Life is too short for your nonsense.
Since dogs ARE welcome at the squares, maybe it is a place for certain folks to avoid. If you are allergic or just plain don't want them there, then it is obviously not a place where you will be comfortable....you should probably stay home.

Today we can ban dogs, tomorrow strollers, then wheel chairs, what's next, if it bothers you that much stay home I'm sure your sausage and lemonade will remain safe. And no one will claim your recliner.

Our dogs sit in our homes 22-23 hours a day. They enjoy getting out once in a while and love being petted by caring people. How many unhappy dogs do you see in the squares? They love seeing something new too once in a while. Enjoying the company of your dog in a pleasant setting has nothing to do with people wanting personal attention. I truly feel sorry for people who have never known the love of a dog. Just ask distraught service veterans who have been saved by such love.

Welcome!!! Such a nice post for your first. Where did you move here in TV? Which square do you have an issue with? Or, is it all of the squares? I assume you do not have a pet? Did you have a specific incident that happened to you? To start a petition, you must have. Where can folks sign this? What does it say?

GerryAnn, if you don't watch out you are going to turn out just like me.

I think that my respect and interest goes out the window when someone presents their idea by calling people idiots.

I too see no problem with doggies at the square. There aren't many when I go but I don't go when there is a big draw performing group. I don't like wall to wall people.

I will say this;

The more I know about some people, the better I like dogs.

So I might have also responded "Does it matter" since the discussion is not about service dogs at town square events!

I agree. 😊
The simple about this post is....the squares are open to dogs. Very few dogs are ever there. A small percentage do bring well behaved pups. I've never seen a negative situation involving dogs....only people.

Since it is open to dogs, I would say that if one has a problem being around them, they should avoid going.

My pup is not well enough behaved to go there. I wouldn't subject her over friendliness to anyone for fear that someone wouldn't like her over zealous personality. However, I really enjoy seeing the pups there. I've never seen any that appear to be over stimulated or stressed.

I think that dogs in the square is fine ON NORMAL NIGHTS, but I feel that it is upsetting to the dog to be subjected to the noise , confusion, and chaos on very busy, festival type evenings. People love their dogs and love to show them off, but do that precious dog a favor and leave him/her home on these crowded evenings.

CFrance
10-12-2015, 10:15 PM
How in the world would anyone know what is upsetting to somebody else's dog? Everyone's dog is different. There are as many different personalities as there are in humans.

My large dog doesn't like crowds. My friend has two very large, tall dogs who can take any size crowd with ease. Some dogs have separation anxiety when left home alone for more than a couple of hours. Some take that with ease.

Every dog is different, and people should not lump them all into one category. And especially, no one should be suggesting others are abusing their dogs.

I have 2 dogs, I think I'll teach them to save seats. When I get there, I'll save their seats while they line dance. Then I'll send them back home to fetch a cooler, but I won't let them open the beer on the street or in the cart. After the entertainment, they can hang out and have intimate encounters. Before coming home they can "poop" wherever they want, and perhaps snatch a cat from a lanai--they can blame the coyotes.:1rotfl:
