Recently I listed an item for sale on TOTV. I received an email asking for the condition and price of the item. I responded and received an email indicating they would send me a money order for a larger amt than asking, which would include shipping and a shipping company would pick up the item. Sounds shady. Thoughts?

I'd cash the money order before sending anything

Definitely a scam. Wouldn't give any info - address etc! I have gotten this before when using craigslist.

I responded to the email telling them, cash only, pickup in the Villages and I don't do business like that. I was wondering if others posting on TOTV classified have encountered this before. Beware

Yup this happens all the time on Craigslist. If u fall for it u lose your item and get no money because the check is bad. I like to play with them and tell themI will take a check drawn at my bank. Or I will ask them if they trust their pick up agent and they say yes and then I tell them good send the cash with them since they are trust worthy. But the best thing is to just tell them cash only in person

I did supply the emails by which I was reached regarding an item for sale. The first email came through TOTV with the Logo, user's first and last name and email address.

I replied to the email address and received a private email with the "money order- shipping company" scam.

I have forwarded all these emails to the administrator at TOTV on Tues of this week. Still no reply from them.

Either the member had his log in hacked, or the member is the scammmer .

Anxious to hear from Admin on this, as I am not the only one to receive these scams. I can understand it on Craig's list. I just didn't expect it on TOTV.

Please don't use password or 1234 as your password.Change it frequently.Numbers and letters even your old childhood address like 1456Chestnut! then write it down. When you get a email from a friend and it wants to sell you something (like PE drugs) tell them to change their password for they have been hacked by a spammer.Like the joke:I use incorrect for my password that way if I can't remember my password I just put in anything and the site tells me my password is incorrect.

Not to beat a dead horse, but what the heck- it’s already dead.

Couple years ago I put a motorcycle-for-sale ad in a popular … Trader magazine. I have never sold anything this way so I asked some people that sell motorcycles often for advice. They made me aware of this scam so I was prepared. I put in the ad, I will not ship, cash at time of pick up, no checks/money orders, or credit cards - NO exceptions. Within 2 hours of the ad going live I had at least 10 phone calls. Every one of them from out-of-state. Half wanted to send someone to pick up the bike with a money order, and the other half wanted to send me a money order and have me ship it. Some just went away, a couple got angry, and 3 or 4 actually kept raising the offer hoping I would say yes at some point. One woman from TX actually offered thousands above asking price, IF I would allow her to pay by money order.

Do I know for a fact they were scamming, no because I didn’t go through with the deal. Would I bet a years pay they’re scammers, yes.

Still no word from Administrators on TOTV regarding the info I provided them. The user's name, email address etc. I was contact through TOTV with their logo etc. So I would think they would at least check into it.

I'm surprised that the Administrators aren't replying to me on this.

Hello???? Anyone Home????

Do not do it! It is a scam! they will send the money then have it picked up. you will not find out the money order or check is no good until it is to late, the item will be picked up already.

I have never had anyone contact me from TOTV with an offer higher than requested. That happens all the time from Craiglist and often with the online news classifieds. I get rid of them for the most part by just repeating cash and local pick up only. That gets rid of most of the scammers. I also trust my gut when it comes to meeting a prospective purchaser. There have only been 2 cases where I brought the item to our house to show it because I had doubts. Once people see my Dad if they were tempted to do anything they would think twice.

This happened to me a while back. I sent an email to the person who sent the email and told them I was turning it over to the police. I have not heard from them since. I also contacted the moderator for talk of the villages and they checked and said they have no person that email registered on the site and if it happens again let them know. Scam for sure.

Have definitely had that happen to us! We were selling a pet bird. Same thing...send you more then youre asking, UPS would do the pick up. Reminded them this was a live animal. This was a bit strange to be shipping a live animal to California (our buyer), so we opted out. Way too sketchy for us.
