There is an unconfirmed report coming out of Talk of The Villages World Headquarters that the switchover to the new software and appearance may come as early as this Sunday morning. An official of the organization who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that everyting is ready to go. He said that all members are reminded that all they have to do is reset their password and that everything will be as normal. Phone messages for other principles of the company were not returned. It was almost a month ago that the first official announcement of new software was announced by Darrel and Tony. They said at that time, that testing was underway. Public response to the improvement has been overwhelmingly positive.

Correct your email now
You might want to print this message

Now would be a good time to see if your email address is in our files correctly, before we start the new forum software.

Use of the new forum is dependent on your email address being correct.

Here's how.

Click on User CP up top there near the Welcome Back message
In User CP, on the left go down to Account Related settings.
About the middle of the dialogue box is Email:
Enter your correct email address. Check it to make sure.
Go to the bottom of the dialogue box and click the Change Profile button.

Password resetting in the new forum
If you have difficulty with your password and need to reset it you will not be able to log in when you attempt to.

Instead you will be taken to a screen that will allow you to reset your password. It looks like this.

<img src="http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/talkofthevillages/password1.jpg" alt="Photobucket Image Hosting">

Click on the word "here."

At the next screen you will see the following

<img src="http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/talkofthevillages/password2.jpg" alt="Photobucket Image Hosting">

Enter your email address the complete the image verification.

An email will be sent to the email of record we have in the forum data. If you can't get in, drop us a note at talkofthevillages@gmail.com. We will need your correct username that you use to log in and your email address.

We will not need you to send up your password, but instead will assign you a password which you can consider temporary, but write it down anyhow.

You will then be able to change that password after you log in by following the link sent to your email address.

If you have the wrong email address in current records we will have to set your email to the correct address.

If your email is correct now, you should be able to do this by yourself.

Tony, will you all stay up 24/7 for a day or two until we have this new format figured out? ;) :o

Darrel is down in the engine room working on the dilithium crystals. He wants you all to be aware of the following. You might want to print this.

What to expect after the move.

1.You will need to do a password reset in the new forums. Your old password will not come over in the move. If the email you signed up with is incorrect, changed or you type it in wrong you will not receive your new password information.

Note: In some cases spam blockers will catch your password email notifications so it may appear you didnt get it. If you do not receive it check your spam folder. If you still dont receive it, email the admins with your user name and we will manually reset it.

You will be emailed a temporary password that will get you back into the forums. After that you can go to User CP and change it back to whatever you like.

This is the link that will get you your new temporary password to the new site. Dont bother using it until after the move is complete or you will have to do it all over again.

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/login.php?do=lostpw

2. Your Avatar will not come over in the move. You will need to re-upload when you arrive at the new site. This can be done in your User CP.

3. Your username, stats and all your posts will be moved.

4. If you created a link within a post to another post within the site, the link will be pointing back to the old site which will be of course disabled after the move. Unfortunately there is no way around this.

5. You will also notice that search engines such as Google will for a time list links to the old site. It will take several weeks or more for the search engines to re-index the new pages.

6. Most of the functionality in the new site will seem relatively familiar. Youre see create new thread buttons and reply buttons. The forum basically works the same.

7. The new software however is very different in many ways to our current software. It has many new features such as social groups, personal photo albums and much more. It will take some time to figure things out and get used to the new format. Many things will seem the same but many things will be very different.

8. You will also notice that there is no home page like our current site. The forum will be the home page with banner ads on the left and new posts and current logged in members towards the bottom of the forums.

The day of the move, the old forums will be put in maintenance mode. The old will be migrated to the new and then the URL changed to the new location. When all this is complete, www.talkofthevillages.com will take you to the new site. If you have a link to the site in your favorites to any part of the site other than www.talkofthevillages.com it will take you back to the old site which after a period of time will no longer be accessible. For a time the old site will still be viewable but closed down for new posts.

All of this makes me rather curious. I have assumed that you three admins own and operate this site. Is that incorrect?

Are we going to be given a date that the switch over will occur or will we just be surprised with new screens?

A date would be preferred.

zcaveman:
When will this happen? Late Sunday afternoon or evening. Anybody who has ever done computer software cutovers know any promise of a specific time it will be successfully made is illusive.

trichard:
Do you really think we are keeping this a top secret? Really?

Barefoot:
Jan speaks pig Latin quite well, actually. He studied under a master in the hills of West Virginia.

Smileys? I don't know of any new smileys being added. I am just hoping the old ones are not lost. Darrel will have to tell us about that, and he is very, very shy right now.

Sam:
What curtain? You think we would do this for somebody else? You think I am smoking something over here? Eh?

Admins,

Will this cutover affect the chat room in any way? Will the link still be there and be functional from the get go? Will the chat room software/functionality change in any way?

Many thanks for all that you do...

The chat room will still work just as it always did but it may not be available for a day until I get it configured. The similes will also be available but it may take me a few hours to get everything back the way it was.

I have to get back to work now...

I am not sure what I would do without my smilies and chat room capabilities....but I guess it would be ok to "loose" the political forum behind....I have bruises all over and I don't know how much more I can take or give....perhaps I will loose it myself.....

I also can't wait to have my advertisment on here....for my business....this is the best place for it...although that means I better send the check to Jan ASAP.....and the design....
