Some of the comments in another thread by Sidney Lanier created this question in my mind. Is the cost of recycled water for irrigation significantly less than the drinking water in TV? Considering that water is free wether it is recycled or fresh and that the costs that are for delivery (pipes, pumps, etc.) Should be the same, why would there be a difference? Just wondering. ???

Why do you think the water is free?
Processing drinking water cost much more than processing waste water for use a irrigation water.

The primary reason for the price difference between drinking water (potable water) and recycled water (irrigation water) is this: Irrigation water is not processed through the sanitary sewer system. It goes directly into the ground. It is not treated at a sewage treatment plant which is a big expense. Potable water goes into the sanitary sewer system piping system (through the drains in your house) and has to be be treated in the sewage treatment plant.
There is much greater expense in the overall processing of potable water than irrigation water. The price difference also acts as an incentive to use recycled water for irrigation instead of potable water, although I'm sure some of us (including me) bite the bullet and spend the extra few bucks using potable water to water a few plants when we don't want to do the "overkill" of turning on the irrigation system.

In my area of the country water isn't "processed". Delivery is by means of small local area wells. It is well water with one well for every couple hundred houses. Sewer system is a separate entity. It is run by the county and the gray water is used for agricultural spray irrigation.
That's why I said the water is free but you pay for the delivery system. That's the way it works in my area.
My question still remains. Is the irrigation water significantly cheaper than the drinking water in the villages?

Per this months bill:
Potable Water: Base fee = $7.75
Usage fee 0-8kg $1.66/k = 1.66 x 3.520 = $5.84
Total = $13.59
Irrigation Water: Base fee = $5.20
Usage fee 0-7kg @ $1.80/k = 1.80 x 1.40 = $2.52
Total = $$7.72
Sewerage: Base fee + $11.12
Usage fee 0-10k @ 3.99/k = 3.99 x 3.520 = $14.04
Solid Waste (trash & recycle): $16.92
Hope this helps. I only had irrigation running 1 time this month due to all the rain we had. If I run it once every week, I hit in the 7000-8000 gallon mark.

Thanks WLAN56 for the info. Wow! I pay about $57 a month for sewer and this month about $50 for water. Now I have a very large house and live at the beach (lots of guests during the summer LOL) lots of showers here every day. Our sewer and public water system here is very new and we are paying high sewer and water infrastucture as part of it so your CDD costs I guess have to be factored in somehow. But I am still surprised (pleasantly) at the costs. Thanks again for providing them. :thumbup:

Are you saying that your drinking water is straight from the well to your house with no treatment whatsoever?
Oh, and I stand corrected about the cost of potable water vs irrigation water after reading WLAN56's post. Amazing to me that irrigation water cost more than potable - if that's the case, why not run potable water in the irrigation system and save the high cost?

Am I reading that right? The usage fee is higher for irrigation water than Potable water? Can that be right? Why would that be?

Chuck,
Yes we have well water, it is pumped from a well up the road from me straight to my house. Up until about 15 years ago we all had private wells and septic tanks but then the area started booming with development and they brought in public water and sewer.....progress. Now it takes twice as long to get to the beach but you don't have to worry about the well pump quiting during a shower! :coolsmiley:
What about private wells for Irrigation? Does anyone use one? Are they allowed in TV?

I believe one needs a permit to drill a well. I doubt the county would issue one for an individual Villager.
It may even be prohibited by The Villages. For a definitive answer check with The Villages and Sumter County and also the Water District.
Even if you could, the cost would be prohibitive.
