....what this is a pic of and what it is used for? If you see a need for the use of it from the person you're playing with, gently remind them of golf etiquette and maybe carry the lesson a step farther and show them how to use it on tee boxes and fairways; after all, the sand that is poured out of it is free. It really doesn't take an advanced degree or is rocket science to use it. I know all TOTV'ers use it when needed......

I totally agree with you. There really seems to be an increase in the unfilled divots on tee boxes and fairways; why can't some people lower themselves from their entitled class and fix their divots? I'll go a step further and ask why can't this same class of people rakes the bunkers also. I know I'm beginning to expect too much.

You should also post a picture of a bunker rake, especially one from an executive course. Those seem to be ignored even more than the championship bunkers. I know the ambassadors on the exec courses are somewhat restrained about managing pace of play, but can't they at least remind players to rake the traps after taking their typical three swipes at the sand?

I was talking with an Ambassador the other day and he told me that one day he did say something to a group of ladies about raking bunkers and that one of them snarled up and told that they didn't have to do that because that was his job. Entitled, no doubt.

People can try a LITTLE harder to play by the rules. It takes the FUN out of it when things are so higglety pigglety.
What is it with saying entitled today? Why do some people want you to feel sympathy for a lot of people who don't even TRY? And talk down to you when all you have done is do it right?

People need to pile on and call people out when they see that happening. I can understand not seeing a small mark when a worm burner skims across the green (as a lot of people's do), but damn, those marks from high lofted shots, I don't understand why the entitled cannot fix them. I try to fix as many as time allows when playing, along with sanding divots on the tees, but it's becoming ridiculous.

Filling a divot hole with sand has absolutely nothing to do with the rules of golf.
Try USGA official rules of golf, section I, Etiquette page 20 paragraph 5
USGA: 2012-2015 Rules of Golf (http://usga.org/rules/2012-2015-Rules-of-Golf/)
Repair of Divots, Ball Marks and Damage by Shoes
Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any
damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not
made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the
group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.
And in case you want to argue that this is "not a rule"---it is not a rule as to play procedure or score penalties, it is a rule of etiquette in the rules book and is punishable by penalty---from page 21:
Conclusion; Penalties for Breach
If players follow the guidelines in this section, it will make the game more
enjoyable for everyone.
If a player consistently disregards these guidelines during a round or over
a period of time to the detriment of others, it is recommended that the
Committee considers taking appropriate disciplinary action against the
offending player. Such action may, for example, include prohibiting play for
a limited time on the course or in a certain number of competitions. This
is considered to be justifiable in terms of protecting the interests of the
majority of golfers who wish to play in accordance with these guidelines.
In the case of a serious breach of etiquette, the Committee may disqualify a
player under Rule 33-7.
33-7. Disqualification Penalty; Committee Discretion
A penalty of disqualification may in exceptional individual cases be waived,
modified or imposed if the Committee considers such action warranted.
Any penalty less than disqualification must not be waived or modified.
If a Committee considers that a player is guilty of a serious breach of
etiquette, it may impose a penalty of disqualification under this Rule.
Sorry New Guy---I was hoping to agree with you for a second time, but alas.......:1rotfl:

This is a senior citizen golf cart community. If it was a golf community 90% would be walking, playing all the rules [not just the ones you know], not plucking the ball out of the hole with a suction cup and doing it all on a regulation size course.
Hardly anyone cares about what they shoot or improving. I don't care enough. If I cared I would be going to the free practice greens and bunkers at Sarasota. I've talked to many who have taken lessons but don't practice. I'm a retired golf coach. I just want to play and meet others. I won't play alone. I've met thousands of happy people this way and only 2 grouches.
I thought I'd love to play full size courses that cost a fraction of what our's cost. For the last 3 weeks I played Continental, the Lakes of Lady Lake and the preserve course that's 45 minutes away not the closer one. Even if it was free I don't know if I'd go back. What a privilege it is to play "Almost Golf" for free on beautiful executive courses surrounded by beautifully landscaped homes. I truly feel entitled down here. I don't know anyone outside of the villages that has it as good as me.
Most of these kinds of arguments could be avoided if the "glass half empty" or "footprints in the sand" types would count their blessings and all their strokes.

I don't see a lot of experienced golfers mistreat the courses. I think it is an issue of the inexperienced masses taking up the golf activity. In other words, they don't know better and/or they don't care. No golf etiquette.

I really hear what you are saying. BUT...why play at all? Most of us have played golf for years and we think it is the right thing to do. Do we matter? We still rake sand and repair ball marks and fill in divots and don't walk in anyone's putting line and don't talk while they are addressing the ball and........
I am usually a glass half full but it doesn't HURT to remind new people that there are things that will make them look better on the course and keep the course repaired for others. They simply don't know. Perhaps some will be reading this thread.
Here new golfers. Not filling in divots is kinda like blowing your nose in a cloth napkin at a nice restaurant. Nuff said.

Just felt compelled to write something here, and that isn't usually a good inspiration for me.
A lot of us have "fixed" more than our fair share of "leftover blemishes" on our beautiful golf courses. I like to think when doing this, it's sort of an "above and beyond" what I really need to do kind of thing...and I really should be doing more of these in a more substantive/beneficial setting. But at this point, I'm not, so I try my best to avoid getting all riled up and launching into expletive filled tirades as I exceed my expected quota of divot repairs. I also try to avoid hysterics when encountering folks ahead of me in the 10 item express check-out line, with at least 25 items on the conveyor belt, this takes some grit...then there's the loud talkers in the movie theatre or those hurling trash from their golf carts, in super-charged carts clearly going well over the 19mph, that mine legally tops out at. It does take some patience and tolerance, yes and gritty intestinal fortitude to put up with all the transgressions of this "entitled" class of Village folks. So, I can choose to be endlessly aggravated or simply continue going "above & beyond", even just a little - get a good feeling out of it, and keep the blood pressure down.

I'm sure Gracie meant golf etiquette. My wife and I played with another couple today at Palmetto and the 4 of us repaired no less than 2 divots each (other than ours) on every green. Besides taking longer to play, it's just damn annoying.
One poster made the statement to not get the blood pressure up; had my annual yesterday and mine was 114/68. Fixing divots and repairing ball marks doesn't get my BP up - it's just damn annoying.

You know it doesn't seem to be as big as a problem as slow play. I bet every other time that I play golf & I don't play golf as much as a lot of people do but it seems like so many people will have a foresome & they'll be a twosome or 3 people & sometimes a faster 4some & these slow 4some will have 2 holes backed up & I understand the Ambassadors can't force the slower players to let the faster players play through. Or you'll have first time players playing from the BLACK TEES & they can't hit the ball to the GREEN TEES. Just a week ago 4 players were playing & 2 of them couldn't hit the ball 100 ft. They would ride their carts straight across from their ball, get off their carts, walk to the ball, look at the green & then walk back to their cart & get a club.. With all of the the golf courses & players that are playing now you would think our Rec. board committee would have harsher rules or let the ambassador speed things up. It's nice that The Villages want to make a big impression on possibly new people coming in but come on, these people wouldn't get away with this kind of play anywhere else in the country! Sorry to downplay the sand bottle thing, but I just really think golf courses have got bigger issues than sand bottles!

First of all it's pretty hard to embarrass yourself down here. We're all in the same boat and you will not find a more understanding group than senior golfers. The only way the game could be more humiliating is if you have to play it in a bathing suit.
I play with a couple of guys regularly. We got paired up with a couple of woman and before we even started one woman said "First of all I'd like to apologize for my game. I am not very good at it and hope you don't laugh." I said, "Wait till you see Jim play, you'll be laughing for the next nine holes." I was only joking but they knew our priorities were to have a good time. That's the way it is with 99% of the people you I run into.
BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Having said all that it would help out quite a bit if you were prepared. Take a look at this video:
v=JExDk2hWb0k
We have a different kind of grass that you don't fix by replacing the divot. You fix it by pouring on some soil and seed mix right over the divot.

TV has a special class for you and everyone else who moves here and wants to play golf. It's called "Good Golf School", it given once a month at Colony Cottage Rec Center usually on a Thursday morning. It starts at 9am and lasts until about 11:30. Look in the Sun newspaper sports section and usually on page 2 there is a colored vertical column of various Villages sports news. Look for the heading Good Golf School, and call and reserve your spot.
I started playing golf in 1962 when I was 12 and I took the class when I moved here in 2011. I really didn't learn anything new about golf, but at the time I didn't understand the 'wave' system and wave times listed in the newspaper or how to make teetimes. They will go into the teetime system almost a little too much, but basically forget about the free telephone version they discuss and just sign up for the computer system and pay the $8 a month it costs.
The wave system pertains to the fact we have nine golf courses that are 27 holes. You do know that golf is only 18 holes in a round. To get the most use out of our courses, there is a starter shack at every nine and all three nines have identical teetimes. So when you've finished your front nine and want to go to your back nine, it would be impossible if golfers are still teeting off starting their round. So the waves mean, there is no teetimes during those periods of time so that other golfers can cross over and start their back nine. I probably confused you, and honestly you'll be best off just playing the executive courses for the first year anyway. They are free and they are all just nine holes. That's the one thing good about TV, the execs are a great place for new golfers to improve their skills.
