Monday afternoon our Golf Cart was parked legally in front of Cal's Barbershop at LS.. it was hit by a black car.. which kept on going.. Luckily my husband was already in the barbershop and no one else was hurt , but our cart ended up on the sidewalk. So yes, drive defensively everyone.. And I hope Karma plays a part for the black car that kept going after the accident ...

Hitting and running is getting very common in Florida, including killing people. WHERE is personal responsibility? I guess we have to be sympathetic to the poor drivers personality disorder. TIRED of this. AND feel so bad for you Jaggy, who just like the rest of us, put in many hours to earn the money to buy your cart.

I do have a question. Is your cart a 4 passenger possibly with a golf club rack on the back.
I often see these pulled into a parking space with the front wheels against the curb and the back club rack sticking out into the street. These racks are usually black and not easy to see.

Sorry that happened to you. Is the cart badly damaged? Could he drive it home? I hope you filed a police report with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office? Welcome to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Website (http://www.sumtercountysheriff.org/)

That seriously bites. I'm so sorry this happened. Here's hoping there was more damage to the slimebag's car than to your cart.
Sadly, the penalties in Florida for a hit and run are lower than for a DUI. So, it seems that some feel running is the better course and, of course, they might never get caught. Personal responsibility, morals and ethics seem to take a back seat.

I'd like to hear from the person that hit and ran. As you get older you hope your moral compass is still working and over rides any panicky situation that might kick in to run away. My guess someone is sitting at home now totally distraught over what they done and why they ran away. I can't explain why that's the first possible scenario that jumps in my mind.
I feel sorry for everyone and hope insurance takes care of the bills.
My opinions are rarely popular. So I'll probably do \\\\\ in a little while.

I suppose not likely. But in my imagination they are beating themselves up and worrying about the police and other legal action. I said I don't know why that's my reaction. Let's just leave it at that.

If that is the case, IMHO, they should be worrying about the owners of the cart and the financial impact on them, as well as being thankful no one was hurt, and NOT worrying about getting caught by the police or sued by a lawyer. They are NOT the victims

Most likely the driver had no current license, no insurance, had a warrant or was drunk. Just a few reasons why. He would have been in more trouble if he stayed around. Just a few reasons and am sure there's more possibly

Not having been to TV (next month will be first visit), I had a difficult time visualizing the OP. I just noticed the picture at the top of this page. Under the “The Villages” bubble I can see a long golf cart sticking out into the roadway. Now I can see how this cart can be hit.
At the square is there sufficient “normal” parking for cars or extra long carts?
I realize the o’poster never said they had a long cart, but still curious.

Possibly the driver had a "couple of beers" as they like to say and wanted to avoid a dui. Sad that they do seem easy on this type of non-injury thing.

My opinions rarely are either. My guess is that the person in the black car has a F/U attitude. He/she is hoping no one got his/her license number. It's sad, but a lot of people have no morals anymore; their attitude is "me first,
screw everyone else". Not as prevalent here in TV, there are a lot of good people here, but, there is that element of people here.

Yeah, I doubt that the person who hit the cart is sitting at home writing a check from the "Friends of the Black Golf Cart"

I feel the same way. I think the people who caused this action are probably very sorry and just can't figure out how to take responsibility. I share your imagination Tomwed.

I think a hit and run back home [NJ] with all kinds of people of all ages is most likely the result of drunk driving, drugs, uninsured motorist or an FU attitude. Down here, with 98% [my guess] over the age of 55, having been responsible workers that can afford to live here has biased my view. People like me live here. Now a hit and run and the first thing I think is one of us "lost our marbles". That's a kind way to put it.
Is that profiling? Am I being naive?

What is the difference between profiling and summarizing traits? I swear to you I don't know.
I am afraid to even THINK sometimes. This is craziness.

It's my reaction. It's an instinct based upon thousands of incidents in the past. It's not thinking. I can't pull up the thousands of incidents. It's seeing how my relatives behaved as they got older. Some being very different than they were when they were younger. Bill Cosby [no one I respect now] use to do a comedy routine about his mother as a grandmother and how she treated his children so kindly. He said to his little kids, "Don't let her fool you. She's just an old woman who is trying to get into heaven". Why do people laugh at that routine even though it's uncomfortable for 50 years? There must be something in that that aging process that rings true with the audiance.

Naïve? Absolutely! Villagers do not live in a bubble! Other Florida residents frequent the Villages and the squares daily - and not all of them are 'over the age of 55'!

You don't think or know that we are by far [over 90%] the largest group in the squares everyday? Honestly, I go to Brownwood 2 or 3 times a month even though I'm less than a mile away. I don't know.
Maybe Gracie is right. Maybe I am acting crazy or crazy and never saw it coming.

No--Do you? I once counted a hundred vehicles to make my point that hardly anyone stops at a stop sign. It was 98%. I'm golfing twice to day but maybe I'll go to Cal's at Brownwood and count 100 [cars and trucks] and see how many are around my age. It's not scientific I know. But if it's something like 50 50 than I'm way off base.
I'm a dad, a husband and a survivor of Catholic school so being wrong won't be a unique experience.

I think there is a false sense of security in TV. Would you leave your open beverage in your car and come back and drink it in any place other than TV? Would you leave your golf clubs? Clothes? Purse? I see that constantly.
As To the hit and run, I am always flabbergasted when I hear about these occurrences because I think retired professionals know better and are better than hoodlums.

I can't help myself. I always lock my car, my house and my bike [not always the bike anymore]. It's an old habit. I touch every metal handle two quick times down here too before I twist it even though I have never had a static electricity shock down here. I wonder when I will stop.
I have found one pocketbook that I got back to it's owner and one man's fanny pack with a few hundred dollars I got back to it's owner and quite a few clubs I turned in or found the owner. My friends down here have stories like that too.
I don't remember finding any purses or fanny packs up north in Jersey. I do think it's very different down here in The Villages but I am still street smart enough not to let down my guard completely.
Someone brought up "lapse of judgement" in the thread about the tragic accident. That stuck with me. I think there are forgivable lapses in judgement all the time in our age group. This seems consistent with all the lost items I found and the behavior of my elders as we matured.

The streets at the Town Squares are open to the public. There are many cars that come from outside the community.
The accident wasn't necessarily caused by a retired professional, could have been a teenager texting.

Good point.
My Mom misplaced her purse a few days ago in a local clothing store. Came home crying as she did not know she had just misplaced and but that had thought that perhaps it was stolen. This is clothing store on CR466. We cancelled the credit cards and were on the phone for a long time. The call that someone had turned in her misplaced purse came in after we had cancelled the various credit cards.
I do not believe that the Villages is a bubble but there are a lot of good people here. Bad or people with various problems come in all ages and do live in the Villages. So too do a lot of caring mature men and women who will give you the shirt off their backs.

What is the definition of a bubble?
When I first started teaching I visited a friend at Penn State. The campus was huge with people my own age all over the place. There were places to eat and shop. Doesn't that describe a bubble too? I thought that's what a bubble was.
Or is a bubble more like a mythical place where people believe once inside the bubble the world is perfect and no one will do you harm?
I think what happened to your mother happens everyday here because we all have stories of random acts of kindness like yours. Don't you? You have been here longer after a while do you see things differently?

Just a lot more traffic than in 2005. There are also a lot more outside visitors coming to the Villages especially in Brownwood and Spanish Springs Squares.
The various Universities I have been at-- UNR, BYU, the University of Denver, the College of San Mateo, and the University of Minnesota are more like bubbles as it is usually only students, staff, professors and the occasional event attendant on campus. Here in the Villages, we have people coming in from many of the other communities quite often. And, all the workers keeping the Villages pristine as well. You do not see that many workers on college campuses.

Your theory makes me recall the saying that goes something like 'One can't predict what will happen on any given day'. Most often associated with sports but probably valid on any given day in the Villages, too.
