We did not want to install a water softener, but were concerned about the build up in and around our sinks and appliances. We opted for a whole house water filtration system and a De-scaler from ScaleWatcher ($399 online). This system will treat your water and you do not need to buy expensive systems that many companies tout. The entire set up was installed by CPM Plumbing for $600 in about 2 1/2 hours. They did a great job.
