Dr. Nguyen is the best. Look at previous threads on knee replacements.

I am seeing Dr. Carl Olllivierre. Got in to see him pretty quickly for the first appointment, and he is replacing my knee on Dec. 3. Everything I've read about him has been positive. Will let you know!

Just had my 2nd knee replaced by Dr. Steve Nguyen on Monday. Very minor pain and already have an angle of 112 degrees. I have in-home therapy thru Monday and then out-patient PT for 6 weeks starting Tuesday. You have to wait quite a while to get an appointment with him but the pain level and short rehab period makes up for that. I am already off the walker and just using a cane.

Agree with Raynan....I had 2 knees replaced by Dr Nguyen (one in December 2014 and the other May 2015). Very little pain, up and around same day of operation, no walker/cane or any type of assistance after 2 days. Today playing full golf and advanced water volleyball no problem.
I suggest you meet with the doctors you are considering but moreso talk to the people in the wait room (who are awaiting follow ups) and ask how their post recovery has been especially pain level immediately after the operation.

Is it true that Medicare does not cover his surgery?

If you're referring to Dr. Nguyen, Medicare does cover the surgery. If you are Medicare it will require an overnight stay in the hospital. If you are not Medicare (under 65, like me) it can be done in day surgery. Same procedure, it's just that Medicare requires the overnight stay.

If you want very fast recovery with minimal pain I highly recommend Dr. Nguyen. I've talked to several other people who had full knee replacement by other Drs and the difference seems significant. Talk to his patients while waiting for you appt in his office. He goes in through the side and spares a muscle that reduces the recovery time.

Just so you'll know, I was up on my knee the next day and never had significant pain with Dr. Duke. Adhering to therapy regimen is absolutely essential, regardless of doctor.

:agree: ... I did my pre-operation exercises, lost some weight and was playing pickleball in a few weeks after my total knee replacement.

New techniques for less invasive knee replacement. Very successful and couldn't have better care than at waterman hospital in taveras and his staff

Arnie,
I would recommend a knee surgeon out of the area. Dr Jose Amundaray of Southeast orthopedics Jacksonville, FL. (904)634-0640. He was formerly with The FL knee and orthopedic centers in Clearwater, FL. He has treated over thirty residents that I am aware of as well as myself. Check him out. You'll like him. Great staff. Hopefully this will help.

Dr. James Duke in Ocala. He was awarded Top Orthopedic Doctor of the Year by the American Orthopedic Association a couple years ago. He has replaced both of my husbands knees and he gets down on his knees as always. Recommend him very highly.

 Great job! Had a total knee replacement and was back to Pickleball in no time. BUT, I did leg exercises BEFORE the operation and lost some weight to make it easier on the new knee. If I ever need the other knee done, that's who will do it.

Dr. Steven Nguyen in Orlando 407-355-3120 does the replacement from the side which really shortens recovery time. My husband had it in October and was golfing exec courses 4 weeks later. Getting his other one done in January! He has a long wait so get an appt and get in line with all the Villagers. Good luck!
