DOOMED SPACECRAFT: Jules Verne is about to become a fireball. On Sept. 29th, with NASA aircraft looking on, the 22-ton European spacecraft will plunge into Earth's atmosphere over the south Pacific Ocean and harmlessly disintegrate. Jules Verne recently spent five months docked to the space station where it delivered supplies, used its engines help the station avoid a piece of space junk, and served as an impromptu bedroom for the ISS crew. Mission accomplished, the doomed spacecraft is now making its final orbits around Earth glowing about as brightly as Polaris (the North Star). US and European observers are favored with flybys this weekend.

Here's the schedule for The Villages: http://spaceweather.com/flybys/search_results.php?zip=32162

Aww, I think you missed it. :(
The flybys were supposed to happen on the 19th,20th, and 21st. This week all you can see is the Hubble Telescope, according to the schedule. the Jules Verne will crash into the Pacific on Sept 29th.

It was cloudy and rainy here, so we missed it, too.

The Hubble is still fun to see...atleast a good learning experience for the kids etc....we appreciate the info and will use it for futures anyway!!

Keep us posted for anything really good if you notice it!!

Will Do!

Just a teensy bit off topic: Cassie, did you try to balance an egg with your kids today? We did that for years during the Equinoxes. It's a fun activity.

No we did not do that....perhaps I lived in a bubble back then too....or mom and dad were just so busy....but I have never heard about trying to balance an egg during the equinox.

I would like to hear more....

Cassie (sorry topic cops :police:) according to Snopes.com it's just a hoax: http://www.snopes.com/science/equinox.asp The Scientists and the folks at the weather channel all claim it's a hoax, too.

On the other hand, according to our family's personal observations, it works! If you try to balance an egg on its end at any other time of year it will eventually stay balanced only after MANY frustrating tries. During the Equinox (it doesn't have to be the Vernal Equinox; it works just as well during the Autumnal Equinox) you can balance an egg quite easily. You have to know the actual time of the Equinox. Starting about 15 minutes before the Equinox the egg will balance almost by itself. It will stay upright until about 15 minutes after the Equinox and then it will start to wobble and it will finally fall over. This is based on my own personal observations during many Equinoxes (Equini?) over the years. Kids get a real kick out of it. Scientists and Snopes say it's bogus. Try it and decide for yourself next spring!
