What has happened? This site used to have such good responses to questions, and concerns fellow Villagers have.
Lately, the responses have attempted to be sarcastic in nature, try to make a joke, or otherwise, belittle the original poster. I am not pointing to any single person, or topic, but a general trend.
I've subscribed to this site for over 4 years, and found it to be quite useful, adding insight to the many of the issues and concerns of fellow Villagers.

Give the masses an anonymous (well almost) platform and this is what will happen. Just look at the vitriol on the Internet in general. The more people that sign up the greater the chance of having some nasty ones.

I admit I am more skeptical than usual and I am sorry. Sometimes making light of things is good and sometimes changing the subject with humor is good but sometimes people really do want to be serious.

Only a few people on here can really be anonymous. Us Top Ten posters in quantity anywhere are fairly easy to identify.
I try to get good information when I can and only remain skeptical about things when they are not multiple sources to an OP's ideas.
I still feel that this a wonderful site for information about the Villages. It does leave a great deal to be desired in the Political Section but that is mainly because everyone is anonymous for the most part on there except for a few times when genuine handles come up or you can recognize people by a motto they use.

I don't like rumors or innuendo...I find them trite and unnecessary when coming from fully formed adults with decades of experience. When I read a post that is a "I read this somewhere..." or "so and so said" then I call the person out to verify what they posted. They rarely do and our lives(what is left of them)don't need the stress some people perversely provide by chicken little proclamations. I find it insulting and self serving.
Am I angry? No...just intolerant of ignorant behavior designed to instill anxiety and provide self worth through internet acceptance.

I very much agree with you Papa. Lately 90% of responses are silly, not even funny, responses or definitely not on topic. I used to be in the top 10 posters but find that if I have nothing to say that is on topic or informative, I just pass on posting. Yes, its good to laugh, but not when someone is asking a serious question and looking for some information. That is how this forum was when I first joined and would love to see some people quit the silliness and get back on track with OP's questions. This forum created the category, Just for Fun, especially for that purpose, if you wanna have fun, post there and I won't be bothered reading it.

Maybe this site can go back to being gentler and kinder but I think there needs to be more transparency. Those of us that have been on for a long period of time can pretty much know one another, (at least by their posts), so we have a good idea of where people are coming from. Some have become very good friends.
Some anonymous posters want to stay that way so they can say what they want to say, without being confronted face to face. In my travels about, I have met people who have asked me if I am "2BNTV", and I said yes, and they were very pleasant.
If more people would think before they post, maybe some people's feelings wouldn't be hurt so easily. If more people would stop before they hit the "submit" button and say to themselves, "is this something I want to put out to the public at large", maybe things would get back to normal.
That's my opinion and I stand by what I say.
BTW - This has been going on for a long time.

As usual Joe, you have it right and I agree with you other than for remaining, or wanting to remain, anonymous. I prefer to go unrecognized although there are a couple of people I chose to know me.
It used to be a great, fun, interesting site, now it is none of those things. Although we do get some interesting medical topics. Great pity because it was the first thing I did with my coffee in the morning.
Also, in my humble opinion, it is now a Garage Sale site - too much "junk" for me to wade through. By all means use the site to sell, but please have a separate category, don't have it mixed in with day to day topics.

Actually, just one---this thread needs to make a distinction between nasty, degrading and insulting responses and humor(whether you personally find it funny or not) There is a COMPLETELY different intent behind each of these types of posts, they cannot be lumped into one. I'm in a little different situation. I own a home in The Villages but, unfortunately, it is rented in a long-term rental progarm. I only get to TV for two weeks -- twice a year, if I'm lucky! This year it will only be one time!
TOTV is one of the sources that helps me know what is going on in TV. I use the site for ideas on contractors. And I save threads for when I finally get to move to TV for recommendations on things like: hairdressers, vets, doctors, groomers, etc. I have a "to do" list for the contractors when my home is next empty!
I do think TOTV isn't as helpful as it used to be and a lot of posts are way too negative. I try to ignore some of those posters! And, it seems like some of the posters that were so helpful when I built my home in 2012 are no longer / or rarely posting. I think they get preoccupied with all the activities in TV.
For me, its a mixed bag on the classifieds. I keep an eye on furniture, golf carts, property rentals, etc so I have an idea on the price of things in TV. But, I raise my eyebrows on some of the items advertised for sale. Why not take them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army?!?

Obviously degrading and insulting is different than (attempts at) humor. But they can be lumped together in one respect...they can both be inappropriate. Degrading and insulting are never appropriate. (Attempts at) humor can definitely be inappropriate. (Lay it on me, ge.)

I have been on here months and not years. However, the “attacks” against rickeyd in the new patios villas thread was really a bit much. They seemed to never end. I too have been victim to some of this and it is unfortunate. Occasionally there is a “pack” mentality here.
Some believe anonymity is the problem but I think it would be a mistake to have our names posted. If I want suggestions on a door lock because my current lock is faulty, or I want recommendations for a safe to store a collection of widgets - I don’t want someone to drive by and say ‘hey, that house has faulty locks, a great gun collection and no safe…” If my name was posted, allowing someone to find my address thru a million online directories, than I would be left posting about the weather. And I can assure you, some would attack that - I know because they have. Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it.

I have been able to get a great deal of useful information from TOTV in the 2 years I have lived in The Villages. For that reason, I intend to continue to read the posts nearly every day.
What I have noticed is that there are a few posters who frequently post comments which they believe are humorous. Once one of these post appears in a thread, it is not uncommon for a few more posts to be reactions to the "humorous" post and the original topic gets abandoned unless someone gets the discussion back on track. If it is a topic that I am interested in I find it frustrating to see these off-topic posts.
It has been suggested that one can block the posters if you do not want to read their posts. The problem with that is that some of their posts are on topic and quite informative. I don't want to lose the ability to read them.
Finally, when someone attempts to make a humorous post, they may want to keep in mind that not everyone shares their sense of humor. Just because some may comment that they think it is funny, does not necessarily mean that they are speaking for the majority of TOTV readers.
I apologize if I have offended anyone, but I wanted to express my opinion for whatever it is worth.

I so agree. But some people are looking to get everyone upset and being anonymous they don't care, they are safe behind their computers.
I think we should know the truth but we don't have to accept an anonymous person's version of it. If it is unusual, over the top and just plain smells funny or has an agenda, then that kind of post is usually challenged and it should be.
We, most of us have a vested and invested interest in this place and there are all kinds of people that it is to their advantage and furthers their business to disparage almost anything here. There are those who have moved here and don't like it here for a myriad of reasons and they want to share their unhappiness. That is fine if they are being truthful. There are people who work here and hate working here and don't like us "rich old people". There are lots of people who are extremely annoyed with the majority view and attitude.
Some posters are very good at ferreting out the troublemakers. Don't shut them up.

There is no question this site has degenerated over the last several years from providing primarily class A, sincere, helpful and accurate information about The Villages to fewer such postings yet growing amounts of generally time wasting drivel.
A couple of years ago I reluctantly started an ignore list which still remains in single digits but needs to grow. I grew tired of repeatedly and predictably seeing frivolous, nonsensical and deleterious one-liners from the same old, same old posters.

I try to keep my responses on topic and relevant. I think that is still true of the majority here. If I think someone has gotten the necessary response, I'll happily join in the joking around. I have no qualms speaking up when I think a post has gone too far, whether in negativity, stupidity, meanness or humor. I try to be gentle about it but don't always succeed. If things don't interest me or I feel I have nothing to contribute, I say nothing. Lately, there has been little that merits a response by me. Sometimes silence truly is golden.

The real garbage usually shows up on other sites where TOTVers who have been booted off of here go to scream at the people they hold responsible. It gets extremely ugly.
I mean primarily Topix Talk of the Villages. I am usually not their target of hate but some others on here do get quite a lot of malice directed towards them. It seems it allows anonymous names so one person can take of dozens of facades.

I don't understand what you are saying. Could you clarify?
You should be on Morse's Christmas list at least, GC. You are one of the best sales people for the Villages.
I like the Villages infinitely more than I did Palm Harbor, Florida but I had a lot of very bad experiences in Palm Harbor. I do think your experiences in a place color how you feel about it. There was that March 2, 2004 certified letter from the Palm Harbor Library General Counsel for instance for my continuing to point out that the Palm Harbor Library no longer had a working link to the Florida Victim Services Directory. I quit volunteering at Palm Harbor's 2 public libraries because of its disappearance I believe or maybe it was all the unsuccessful attempts I made at getting a job in a public and/or law library in the Tampa Bay area. I thought volunteering would open up some doors. But no such luck.
I could not wait to move to the Villages in 2005.
There was also that gaslighting attack on me in March-April of 2000 in two parks in Palm Harbor and one in Tarpon Springs that put me in a hospital/mental health treatment center for about a week. That is another very bad set of memories but did show me that I was really getting somewhere with my 224 613 Project if someone would try that very underhanded and just plain evil kind of approach at going after my credibility. It did work really well for more than a decade at undermining my self-image and family relationships. And I reported it in person to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Headquaters Office on September 18, 2002 when I finally got up enough courage and also while I was armed with a lot of my received correspondence many copies of which I left with one of their Criminal Intelligence detectives even if he told me gaslighting someone like what they did to me was not a crime. And, I still have no clue as to who actually did that to me.

You had to ask ?
I do find the people on TOTV a lot more open minded than those on Findlaw where I was quite a lot from 2001 through 2007. The Findlaw people though had a very much vested interest in the status quo. There were exceptions of course but the lawyers on there really did not want their neatly arranged apple cart upset all that much. You put practical information in the hands of the people who need it the most and you are looking for trouble. Just check how many libraries in Florida have a link to the Florida Victim Services Directory or how about a link to the National Alliance on Mental Illness? Why do they not have Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) links that are very easy to put up for people with mental illlnesses and their families or survivors/victims of crimes?
If anyone wants to know why some of the events happened to me in Palm Harbor just Google Taltarzac725 and it should bring up various documents dating from 1991 and earlier which I have posted on Facebook through Photobucket.
I do thank posters on here like Gracie Girl, RedWitch, KathieI, etc. for at least having a open mind.
I do think cognitive dissonance is a huge problem with some people. If you give people some bad information about something and despite very hard evidence that it is true, they still refuse to believe it because it does not fit in with their world view. Or,maybe, they do not give a $+#*. Or, perhaps it has to be on FOX News to be believed. Or, MSNBC?

You should keep stuff like that and I see you have. I had a particularly nasty cyberstalker/cybersmearer on Findlaw from 2002 through 2006 or 2007. The law is quite different now as back then the cops in Pinellas County; Chesterfield County, Virginia and the FBI would not do anything about this anonymous creep I had had. Cyberstalking and Cyberharassment Laws (http://www.ncsl.org/research/telecommunications-and-information-technology/cyberstalking-and-cyberharassment-laws.aspx) Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes : Online Sunshine (http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=0700-0799/0784/Sections/0784.048.html) Secure Florida - Cyberstalking (http://www.secureflorida.org/risks/cyberstalking/) I could not figure out who he was for years until he bragged about playing me for a fool. It turned out he was some Criminal Defendant from Chesterfield County who was upset I could not find him just the right legal citation-- technicality-- to get him off of his white collar crime case. I did try to keep a lot of his more vicious posts on Findlaw. He posted with literally hundreds of different identities. He was very pleasant though in the e-mails to me when he needed my help. You do have to watch out for Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde type personalities on the Internet. I certainly liked helping Dr. Jekyl as I traveled to law libraries all over Tampa Bay trying to help him as well as checking out their practical holdings for survivors/victims of crimes.
He was a very talented troll knowing just what buttons to push to make me angrier and angrier especially since for a long time I could not figure out why hated me so much. I just made an easy target IMHO and I know I still do present an easy punching bag. That was the whole reason for the gaslighting attack in 2000 in Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. They knew I would tell people about it and make myself sound bonkers. It really worked for more than a decade. People do not want to hear that evil like that happens in the US but it does. Bye bye. I hope others will look at my Photobucket Array for Taltarzac725. You should be able to see the problems I was having fighting for survivors/victims of crimes access to practical information from January 1991 onward. Often the only way they could attack my credibility was going against me instead of addressing the actual issue. The issue is practical information for survivors/victims of crimes that is actually in or accessible through libraries. It is not my mental health. No matter how crazy I may sound that niche can be easily investigated. It is terrible philosophical debate with all kinds of logical flaws but is very good bullying politics. https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ Ad Hominem (Abusive) (http://www.logicallyfallacious.com/index.php/logical-fallacies/10-ad-hominem-abusive) Some of the names in those documents on my Photobucket Facebook array are in the news right now in 2015.

The Topix website is nasty. I haven't looked at it in at least a year. It makes TOTV look like rainbows, unicorns and angel wings.

I googled Topix Talk of the Villages. Is the last post on TV on Topix Jul 22, 2014? I didn't bother to read it since it was so old.
I perceived I was threatened on TOTV once. I took an unpopular stand on a controversial topic. I'm no longer raising children or teaching students. So I only talk to my friends and family about controversial topics.

Let's please try to get back on-track, and be more considerate of the OP.

The latest is around October 18, 2015 talking about their experiences at the latest Crisper's TOTV lunch. I do not bother to look at this Topix stuff often as it is usually the equivalent of junior high school bathroom stall scribbling.
If it comes up when I Google Taltarzac725 I look at it. Otherwise I do not look at it unless it becomes a problem for some other TOTVer. Then I do try to get to the bottom of what is going on given whatever resources I have available to do that.
I do hunt for that cybersmearer/cyberstalker I had on Findlaw from 2001 through 2006-2007 occasionally just in case he makes another appearance some where I post but I have never seen what looks to be him anywhere since 2008. Topix would be his style. He hides using clever avatar names and is usually one of the nastiest posters on a site.

I tried googling Topix again and got different results. This time I found new threads filled with anger, angst and rhetoric; oh well. On a positive note I'm making gingerbread and spice pancakes for breakfast and later I'm playing Amberwood and Okliegh back to back. Recently I rediscovered that if I swing as hard as I can I can hit a 5 iron 170 yards. I haven't done that, ever. And the swing doesn't work yet with my driver but I'll keep trying.

A simple like dislike button after a post and the poster should get the message. If they start to protest too much, not only do they reveal themselves but we can hit ignore forever. We are adults and can discriminate for ourselves. I love to hear from everyone, knowing we come from every background, every level of education and different viewpoints. If I see a lot of likes or dislikes different from mine, I have to reflect on whether it just might be "me", and that is growth.

I for one, am not on the forums as much as I once was. I do feel the tone has changed overall.
Here have been many posts which have been argumentative to the point of being hostile and resorting to middle school behavior.
This has been the site that welcomed many of us here and that we relied upon to find good restaurants, subcontractors, etc.
Several posters have been banned for their hostile attitudes and perhaps more should be too.
We are all here to "live the dream" and enjoy this period of our lives in "America's Friendliest Home Town". When I get on the site and see a bunch of bickering and back biting, I just turn off my computer. I don't need that in my life. There is too much good here to enjoy and celebrate.
I won't buy into the negativity.

I originally came to the forums this past year to learn more about the Villages through the experiences of the peole living here. I try to avoid politics, religion and fishing lies, oops stories. I learned to think about what someone writes and look for the tone of their voice in the words besides what they write. Of course the humor and honesty of the longtime posters is always fun.
