You're right. This person had an important question about hot dogs and I made light of it. WD has Hebrew National on Sale in the south end of town if that's helpful.

Hi Gracie, I like Nathans and Hebrew National but I think Schickhouse is the filet mignon of hot dogs. I found a place on line that has them but I don't know if they will ship to Fl. I will call them Mon. and if I am successful I will post info.

At my age nitrites, phosphates as long as I wash them down with a beer.

Try Zweigle's. IMHO, the best hot dogs around.
I use this place to have them shipped in (they are that good and the hot dogs that Athens in Spanish Springs served):

Is Schickhouse a local brand? What is your local brand? I am familiar with:
Buffalo - Shelly and Salines
Rochester - Zweigles
Syracuse - Hoffmans
Each one of these was my favorite at one time or another. Today Hoffman's is my go to. Give them a try. They went national last year and Publix carries them.
I went to collage in Rochester and after a night of bar hoping you would go out for a garbage plate. Usually at Nick Tahoe's. Mac Salad, home fries, topped with two zweigel's hots then smother with a meat hot sauce all over the top of the mess. Served with Italian bread and butter on the side (irony?). A great heart attack on a plate.

Looks like you can call them on Sunday but the hotdogs need special handling so it may be Monday instead.

Usually if there are nitrites and phosphate, there is a ton of sodium.

I haven't had one of these since the 90's. That's when Calihan's in Ft Lee NJ closed down. I think they were made in either Hoboken or Union City N J.

Wenner will ship a minimum 40 dogs (10 pounds).
Loved them for 40 years-absolutely the best.
They're griddle dogs, but they are best on the grill-I like them "burned".

Its hard to beat Nathan's or Sabretts. However, a Nathan hot dog is only a Nathan when you cook on a flat top and not boil it. The Sabrett is really a Sabrett when cooked in a hot dog cart in midtown.
At the supermarket I like Boars Head.

A quick bit of research reveals that Shickhaus Hot Dogs are made with Beef and Pork. Hebrew National and Nathans are all Beef and Kosher. This distinction should make a big difference to folks who don't eat Pork!

Natural casings its a toss up between Thumanns or Schickhaus-akin to Chevy vs Ford-both are meant to be grilled not boiled.

Used to use Sabrette - untill the corp began having the hot dogs manufactured for own signature - now packaged and sold as Windmill franks/hot dogs.
BTW - the signature West End windmill recently repaired and rewired the lighting of the arms of the windmill - wuite a spectacle again. :)

From a fellow Jerseyian I've noticed the difference in the Windmill hot dogs and after the last purchase swore I was done with them. They now seem way to salty........Have had dogs in the past from Sideroff's and Max's and recently discovered Hoffman's in Publix. Natural casing Hoffman's are delicious in my opinion.

P.S. Love Schickhaus bologna

As I posted earlier - my favorite. If you have tasted a Hoffman's and like a different brand better please post - I'll try it in a heartbeat (maybe my last one). But only if you have tried did the comparison test.

I like natural-casing, beef franks. Occasionally, I find Publix's own brand and they're pretty good. Sometimes, Publix will have Sabrett's. You can get 3-pound packages of Sabrett's in the Brooksville Sam's Club. Boar's Head are good. Nathan's are near the top. In this day and age, you can get just about anything you want online, for a price.
There's a New Jersey guy, John Fox, who knows just about everything there is to know about hot dogs. If you're so inclined, you can read all about hot dogs on RoadFood.com. This link (http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/New-Jersey-Hot-Dogs-m440.aspx) will take you to a thread started by John. It's now over 2,000 posts and goes back over 10 years. Even though the thread is titled New Jersey Hot Dogs, it's not all strictly about New Jersey.
Shickhaus is mentioned more than once in RoadFood threads. Do a search.

I followed the link. Rutt's Hut is mentioned 22 times. If you ever have a layover in Newark, and a serious hot dog foodie, take a cab there. Hebrew National all beef, natural casings comes close.
This link might have their secret relish recipe. click here (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kenwalker/5533937872) I wonder if it can be crock pot cooked?
