squirrels - black or brown?

Have you ever noticed that you never have both black and brown squirrels? We have brown squirrels where we live in Plymouth. My grandmother lived in Harper Woods on the east side of Detroit, and they only had the black squirrels. Well, we had a black squirrel in our backyard two days ago. I keep looking for him, but I haven't seen him since then. I wonder if the other squirrels ran him out of town?

My wife and I were walking one day and saw what I said was a squirrel, and she said was a monkey. Voila! We have a thing know as a monkey squirrel in TV!

This is a lovely topic. So much better than the news these days.

In Cincinnati there is a pretty little village called Glendale. Glendale has black squirrels. In fact, if I am remembering this right, Glendale had those things (I do not know what to call them and I do not know what they are made of) but those things that artists paint with designs and display in various locations around the area, like on corners or near businesses. Glendale's were squirrels. (I sure hope I am not making this up. Graciegirl might know if I really saw big painted squirrels in Glendale.)

--about those "things" --I hope you know what I mean. Cincinnati had Flying Pigs several years ago. They are still around, having been sold to businesses for display. I saw painted horses on corners in Lexington once, or was it Louisville? And it seems like there may have been a furniture city that had chairs or sofas. I hope you know what I mean. You know, those "things." I always love seeing them. The artists do such wonderful work with their designs.

Anyway, Glendale loves their black squirrels.

We have an albino squirrel in our neighborhood.

And please, if anyone else sees big painted things like squirrels or flying pigs or whatever on street corners around the country, please tell me. I hope I am not imagining "things."

We have black, grey, and red squirrels all sharing the back lawn along with chipmunks. We have rabbits, hummingbirds, bats, cardinals and all manner of birds. We have racoons and skunks. Sometimes, when I try to live trap a skunk to take him to the skunk motel in the regional forest, I get a neighborhood cat instead. Usually highly indignant and glad to be released to run back home.

Here in NY we have brown/gray squirrels. Three of my grandkids live in Pa. and the squirrels are black. I have to ask my other son fron northern NJ what color theirs are.

In upstate NY we had RED squirrels...they were loud little things!!! MY inlaws tried to tame one once....they swear he comes to see them every summer when thier RV pulls into the camp ground! As if he was just waiting for them to come home all winter!!! Well....what ever makes and them and Jack (the red squirrel) happy! :a040:

Yes this IS a nice topic!

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, has "Albie" the albino squirrel. He's sort of their unofficial mascot. He runs around campus terrorizing the students. He can be kind of aggressive when he wants to eat. (I think he gets all the attention, so he expects it) There's a tiny little rendition of Albie the squirrel on our daughter's class ring. :coolsmiley:

AND, at the park across from the White House (near where the guy lives in the plastic tent) there's another albino squirrel, who is also pretty aggressive when he wants to be fed. I thought albino squirrels were very rare, but they seem to crop up in unexpected places!

In our backyard here in Utah we have Yakky squirrels. I have no idea what their real name is, but are they ever LOUD!
(According to the Division of Wildlife Resources there are over 12 kinds of squirrels here, but they all look alike to me)

Last summer we were visited by a mommy raccoon and 3 babies, and one of the babies was light tan with a whitish mask and stripes. Do you think it was an albino raccoon? :shrug:

Thank you. It is wonderful to come in here this morning and find out that I did not imagine big painted squirrels on street corners in that Cincinnati village, Glendale.

I have written on here somewhere, maybe it was in that hibiscus thread, about the radio show on gardening that I listen to every Saturday morning almost. Sometimes the gardening guy ((insert shameless confession here: I am secretly in love with him.) --anyway sometimes the gardening guy, who is a tough Irishman in our age group, talks about how you never, ever want to get a squirrel mad at you. They are smart little things, and I guess can be as vindictive as all get out.

Maybe we should call this thread "Squirrely Therapy" or something like that. It is so much better than talking about all the stuff I am trying so hard not to even think about right now. Information overload finally set in and I am ready to just talk about squirrels and such. (Thanks SS.)

Here in Arkansas all I have seen are small grey squirrels. In Michigan we use to have the red squirrels around us. Maybe the temperature affects their fur color. Lol

Is this the same as a fox squirrel? I saw around last January a critter that looked more like a ring-tailed lemur than a squirrel on the greens near the Arnold Palmer CC.

We had another beautiful day here and a ton of grey squirrels are everyplace. We don't have black squirrels right here but we do have red. They are the bad little guys who chew up the electric lines in you attic. For some reason, the red squirrels are known to do more home damage.
When they were clearing the oak trees out for building across the road I saw a lot of what looked like monkey squirrels in Florida.

My mother-in-law use to cook squirrels for her large family. She would work for days cleaning and gutting out these tiny bodies that were all head and tail. She would need 35 squirrels to feed her family of 8!! :icon_hungry:
