Decorating Question (Lighting)

Does anyone have a favorite manufacturer or online source for lighting fixtures? I know I can go to some local stores and walk around looking up, and I will do that. But I will probably end up going through all their catalogs anyway so I would like to get a head start.

And does anybody know the formula for the diameter of the chandelier in relation to the size of the room? This would not be over a table.

I am thinking about dropping some kind of chandelier from the center of a bead board cathedral ceiling. I am also going to look in antique stores. I need light in the room, but I also want a little wow factor in this fixture. I am really hoping to find an antique but how likely is that to happen.

Have you tried looking at Ebay or Craigslist.org for lighting fixtures? Those may be a good sources. I'll look through my records for other lighting sources, I have ordered lighting fixtures online and had great luck.

I think that would be a great WOW factor. I had the most luck, and fun going to Lowes and Home Depot and looking through their manufacturers catalogs. I had a really wonderful bit of luck and found a HUGE antique bronze (look) chandelier for above my dining room table in a room that has a 22 foot celing! I got it for less than 150 dollars at Home Depot. It was too big I thinkto sell easily so it was reduced. Many of the light fixtures in TV that came with the houses in the past had little iddy biddy CHEAP light fixtures. They seem to be doing better in the last year or so and the light fixtures that hang in the dining room areas are bigger and better, not so the bathrooms in every case.

Lighting fixtures have gone down in price (greatly) because so many of them are imported from across the pond.

I would like to take a picture of my light fixture so you could see it, but still can't seem to get the photobucket to work. sigh.

Thank you all for the great information. I will definitely have a look at the Lamps Plus site. And I have never bought anything on eBay or Craigslist, but I will look there, too.

I have found that those lighting formulas always work. (Hmmm, I guess that is why they are called formulas, huh.) Anyway, I figure them out, not only for the size and placement of fixtures, but also for the amount of wattage or lumens or whatever it is called for the size of the room. When we bought this house, we put in a lot of extra lighting, even though I know I look much better in dim light. I think I could probably perform emergency surgery on my kitchen counter I have so much lighting in here. (If only I knew how to perform surgery.) I used to have notes on the formulas but do not know what I did with them so thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

GG, I will definitely give Home Depot a visit and Lowe's, too. I am dealing with 16.75 feet by almost 25 feet.

I just saw your ad on here. I am not in TV yet, but if I were, I would certainly look you up.

And you are right, it is not over a table. I had originally planned to light with sconces to highlight the ceiling and then to just use lamps throughout the room. But I know there will be times when more light is needed.

I am also after a look which I think I can get by dropping the right chandelier from the center of the peak of the wood cathedral ceiling. The room is 16.75 by almost 25 feet.

Whenever I take on a project for my house, lighting is a big deal to me. Not only do I like to see what I am doing, I like to make sure the sizes and lumens are right. (Is 'lumens' the right word? Or is it wattage? -- I often do not know what I am talking about.) The chandelier will be on a dimmer and I will probably still use sconces and lamps, too, of course.

So thank you. But with not being in TV, I will not be able to visit Bella Lighting. Your ad looks nice on here though.

I had just written in another thread about how I cannot download spellcheck with the new software. Well, spellcheck would not have helped at all with what I just caught in my proofreading of this post. I had written that I wanted to use "scones" on the walls of this room. Oh my! I just walked in the door, checked in, before I walk back out again, and here I find this! Poor GG. And I am laughing out loud. (Is that one word or two? I still cannot figure out spellcheck. Or is it spell check?)

Of course, I know you will not really kill yourself. The reason I am laughing so hard is because I know EXACTLY how you feel. I really, really do. Maybe some of these computer people who are on here could organize a tutoring mission to come to Cincinnati to help us. In my case, they would have to point where I am supposed to click. I do not understand computer people when they use their words. Or better yet, instead of pointing, just do it for me.

Graciegirl, I PM'd you a few days ago. I don't know if you picked up your messages yet but it really is a very stunning shower. However, when the picture of your shower came up and nearly filled my computer screen, it caught me off guard. I think you're bathroom looks quite elegant, definitely not raunchy! Your chandelier is beautiful. My goodness, I think that is one high ceiling. That looks absolutely wonderful.

I went to Lowe's last night and looked up a lot. But then we had to go to IKEA, but not for lighting. Mr. Boomer needed some shelves.

IKEA makes me insane for some reason. I can never find my way around the place.

I do like the music they play there though. It always makes me want to dance. And I am a terrible dancer. And when I begin to dance through the meandering aisles at IKEA, it makes Mr. Boomer hurry up to get me out of there.

Actually, the shelves were OK.

But when Mr. Boomer was looking at a desk chair or some such thing, he said to me, "This sure looked a lot better in the catalogue."

"So did I, Darlin'," I said to him. "So did I."

And I danced on through those awful, aimless aisles.

I did not have to stay long at IKEA last night.

Here is a little Boomer story. When we shop for anything I am first a price tag looker, being from German Village of Columbus, Ohio. My husband looks for quality, being from Bexley, in Columbus,Ohio. You Boom, being a Buckeye will get this right away.

I like to have quality but I like a bargain. Well we both liked this table and chairs and you could choose to get it with leather seats or cloth. I wanted the cloth because it was a lot less expensive. Sweetie won out.

It was delivered and a week later we had all the family over for Thanksgiving. The very first thing that happened was that my sister dropped a whole plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, GRAVY face down on the seat.The leather cleaned up perfectly. My sister not so much. Sweetie brings it up whenever we shop for anything anymore.

We have made a lot of memories around it in the dozen years or so we have had it.

Barb is gonna be our Techno consultant. How'd she do that???

Furniture is a weakness of mine. I struggle with my decisions. Went to that store over in Kenwood the other day. The one that is close to my gardening man's place. You know the store I mean. I bet. The one with that infernal Stickley stuff. Need to stay out of there. Found a couch. A camelback traditional thing. I fell in love, GG. I did. Looked at the fabric. And (insert little red censored sign thing here) I went right for the most expensive one. It called to me from among hundreds of choices. I brought the fabric sample home. To see if it is really true love. I am trying so hard to get over it. I do not want to be in love with that fabric sample or that couch. We shall see. I struggle so.
