To the person whose little brown/white dog I found today...

....running down the street in the Village of St. James today, SHAME ON YOU. It had a collar, BUT NO NAME. Seriously? Do you not have any common sense? YOU ARE AN IRRESPONDSIBLE DOG OWNER. The little dog ran up to me panting and scared and my wife and I fed and watered it. My wife took it around the neighborhood on the cart looking for its owner. NO LUCK. Then my wife took it to the Vet at Colony and found out who you were because you did have the sense to have Tina, yes, that's the name of your dog, chipped. She left Tina there and, from what I understand, the Sumter Co. Humane Shelter was able to locate you. PUT YOU DOGS INFO ON ITS COLLAR. Tina is lucky she was found by a person that is a responsible dog owner.

I find it hard to believe Tina's owners were irresponsible since they had the good sense to microchip her. However, thank you for taking the time to go above and beyond to find Tina's owner. Villager, good point.......our cat has multiple tags with the metal rings that you really have to pry open to get off, I did not consider that a tag could be on with a much more flimsy attachment.

I agree - those tags with S- clips Do NOT come off. It's even hard to pry them off with pliers. There are many owners here in TV that depend on a microchip. While those are good practice, it doesn't help if it is (1) on a weekend when Vets and Animal Control are closed (2) If the info on record contains your address elsewhere or has not been updated.

Nothing is better than having the dog tagged or even better - a web collar embroidered with the dogs name/your cell number. (Check out ORVIS.com)

You did a good deed kcrazorbackfan and if in fact this poor dog has gotten out twice lately with no identification, then shame on the owner. St. Charles is a busy street and the pup is lucky she met you instead of the undercarriage of a cart or car.

Let them jump; if they don't do it to me then they're doing to someone else who crosses their line.

We would really have loved to have kept her, she was so friendly and loving, but that wouldn't have been right. And I'm not sure how our "girls" would have taken to her. I just hope the owner wises up and name tags her before it's too late and someone doesn't return her.

Someone at the local Pet Co. or maybe Pet Smart recommended that you put your name rather than your dog's name on the ID along with your address and phone number so that some crook with bad intentions could not steal your dog by calling its name. Many dogs I know though come to anyone with the nice tone in his/her voice.

I have to add though....years ago my golden retriever Brandy had a very strong S hook ID tag on her collar. One day, we noticed it was missing. We replaced it. About 15 years later, my nephew found it in a lake where Brady had been swimming. I still have it....Brandys been long gone. 1/2 of the S was worn down.

I heartily disagree. Really... those tags with S clips come off of our golden(s) so much I have given up putting them on. Our last golden was romping around in the snow one winter in our yard. The next spring after the snow melted, he came running up the yard with the tags hooked onto one of his teeth! I have never met an S clip that could defeat a romping golden. I keep the current golden's tags in my purse to prove he's licensed and has current rabies shot if ever I need to.

That's why we have chips. I do think the collar idea is good. But collars loosen and come off too.

The owner sounds pretty responsible to me; chipped and all. Accidents do happen. Lighten up.

I also think that it is a irresponsible dog owner because that sounds like the dog that I had to chase out of my garage twice while I was washing my car. It did not have collar because. I looked for it when I was tiring to get it out of my garage.

Glad you were there to help this friendly lost dog. Side note on collars. My lhasa apso zoe got her front right paw caught, a nail just slghtly long hooked on the collar. Collars can be so difficultbto keep properly sized. Nails also got a trimming.

Just a reminder-- After Katrina, they advised pet owners to put their cell phones on their pet's IDs and/or colllars. Most people lost their landlines and those phone numbers were useless.

I'm pretty sure TV won't have a Katrina but that is not the point. In case of an emergency, they need to get a hold of you. I've had my cell phone on their IDs for years because if I'm traveling I want them to be able to find me.

Thanks to all the repliers with props and kudos; a lot of TOTV'ers on here would have done the same thing. To the naysayers - you're probably the ones that wouldn't have lifted a finger to help it; you know who you are.

As a follow up, if you have had your pet chipped, please keep the info updated, especially if you've moved from the area where the pet was chipped. We would have found Tina's owner quicker if the info had been updated.
