I went to Cheng's on Wedgewood Lane last night. I spilled my soup. Quite a bit spilled on my clothes, the chair, the table and the floor. The manager was standing right behind me. He never came to the table to help or ask if I had had been injured. The waiter also did not come. I asked for some help from the manager to clean up the mess. He threw me a cloth napkin and told me to go to the bathroom. When I returned to my seat, it was still wet. The chair, table and floor had not been touched. I asked again, if he could help, The manager said, "I am the manager, I do not do that." Then I asked for the waiter, the manager said, he was too busy and threw me three paper napkins. At that point, some patrons walked in onto the wet floor. My friend who was dining with me asked if he was going to clean up the floor so the new guests would not fall, he then threw another napkin on the floor and walked away. I asked again for a towel to clean the wet sticky table and was told it could not be done until we left. We stayed until our food arrived and boxed it and took it home. Of course, we left no tip. As I left the restaurant, I told the manager I had never been treated so poorly, that I could have been burned and he never inquired about my well being, nor did he or anyone else attempt to help us. I told him,I would tell everyone I could not to patronize his restaurant. So I am now sharing my story. If this is the service we as Villagers receive it is no wonder so many restaurants go under!

This is horrible!! Villager or not...people should not be treated this way. He may have just lost a lot of potential customers.
Thank you for sharing!!

We were waiting to eat next door, but walked in to Cheng's to get a to-go menu. They were not friendly, the place smelled way too strong of fish and after a few minutes waiting, I left with out menu to get some fresh air. I have been in and around the food business most of my life and will not eat at Cheng's unless they treat people better and clean up the place starting with the air. If you want multi-cuisine Chinese food, I do recommend the China Gourmet in Colony. It is not big or fancy and does mostly carry out, but they are friendly, helpful, it is very clean and they have a big selection of very good food at reasonable prices.

suninfl06 ..OMG, I am so sorry to hear of your horrible experience..Are you OK?
Thank God, you were not seriously burned..There is no justification for behavior like that. I would have left the food there and walked out!
People like this, should not be in business..I am quite sure after reading this post, he will have a lot less business ..I for one, will never go there..
I own a business and could never imagine treating my clients with such disrespect. I go to extremes to make them comfortable, and happy!
Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I was not hurt but in retrospect I should have walked out without paying for the meal. By the way, would you believe the waiter never even offered me another cup of soup nor returned to the table until he handed us the bill. I hope my message is read and passed to all. Thanks.

Is this the national chain, PF Changs? The one that usually has the big Chinese horse out in front? Maybe it is Pf Cheng...I don't know.

If this was PF Chang's, I would definitely send an email via their Web site. A few years back one was opening across the street from where I worked. Their 2 huge horses were actually sitting in our parking lot for a short time. Anyway, I sent an email asking when they were opening and if I could be one of their customers when they did their soft opening. I received an email back from the President of the company telling me the opening date, apologizing that the soft opening was for family only, and then followed up by sending me two gift certificates to the restaurant to use whenever I wished. Wow, I was very impressed! That being said, I really think you should relay your story to them. Here's the address:

No one should be treated like that. To think, you actually paid good money for that dreadful experience!

I need to throw in my 2 cents. Chengs in The Villages is just a tiny little restaurant in the Buffalo Ridge Plaza. No way is it related to PF Changs the national chain which is an excellent restaurant that I wish would come to The Villages.

We went to Chengs with neighbors and vowed never to return. The customer service was terrible. They were also rude.

I have eaten there twice and the food was acceptable, nothing any different than most of the area chinese restaurants. The service was ordinary and I didn't find the waiters to be rude!

I may be missing something here!!! I agree the service or lack of service you describe is outright TERRIBLE, but why do you think the patron deserves his/her money back or can walk out without paying? The resturant served the food, the patron spilled the soup. NOw granted the resturant lacked all customer service to make a bad situation bearable and pay the bill,NO TIP and walk out is what I "think" I would have done. But lets face it, this is not a 5 STAR resturant and I think the proprietor could have called the the local sheriff if you simply did not pay and walked out. If this did occur what would be your response to the police ..I spilled the soup on myself..or the resturant was not polite and courteous...For some reason that not a good defense and you would have made a bad situation worst.

I am glad it wasn't PF Changs. I like that restaurant.
AND they weren't accommodating at all, which is as important as the food quality.

I must agree with 784caroline on this one. The notice posted here is probably the best course of action you could have taken.

I would have gone above and beyond to accomodate the people after the mishap..
Accidents happen, luckily no one was burned! Some people should NOT be in business, they make it seem like the customers are an annoyance..

I also agree with you on this one 784 at Caroline....Waling out without paying can actually get you thrown into jail...But being a server myself, I can't believe how she was treated and that they didn't even offer to replace the soup! That would never have happened where I work!

I like chengs, and the way I see it, why did you expect them to ask you if you were hurt? I have spilled soup on myself, I didnt have my wife call 911 for the medics, not a big deal. And I cleaned it up. I dont get your put down of the restaurant. Did they spill the soup?, didnt they give you something to pick it up? What am I missing? I feel sorry for all restaurants you visit, I bet you really make their day.

I have ate at chengs at least 20 times and always have been pleased, good food ,good service and very clean. This is why so many restaurants in the villages are closed because of one bad experience and bad mouthing because someone wasnt catered too, they did not spill the soup. Hope there was only a comunacation problem due to language barrier. Please try it yourself and make your own judgement, there has been many good things said about chengs in the past. I would hate to see it closed, times are hard for everyone give them a chance please.

I always like to form my own opinion of any business. Too many times businesses get hurt by one incident, and someone writing a bad review and telling others not to go there. I feel this is unfair to any business. If people go and form their own opinion it will not take long before a business suceeds or goes under.

Can you imagine in this day and time if someone came to you with a dry rag and began cleaning your lap? Perhaps the manager did not see the magnitude of the spillage. Was your demeanor a trifle bit demanding? It is all how we respond to others. Because You spilled your soup others should not eat there? You would like to be responsible for a restaurant losing business because one did not clean your lap? Perhaps there was a language barrier there.
Next time you eat out wear a poncho.

Is this the chinese resturant near Publix supermarket next to an italian resturant? If it is, my friend took me there cause I wanted chinese food and my friend hadnt ever been there. The service was fine but the food was terrible and it was way expensive. My friend will never go back there.

That is just "Awful"... We liked it the first two times we ate there, after that Cheng's went downhill fast. We walked in, the waiter was on the phone joking and laughing in his native language. We stared at him, he laid the phone down, took our order, turned the order in and returned to resume his phone conversation. Someone from the kitchen brought our food. The waiter remained on the phone never looking in our direction to see if we needed something, which we did. The meal lacked flavor!! I had to snap my fingers to get the waiter's attention so we could square up our bill and get the heck out of there. He put the phone down and prepared our bill. He plopped it on the table and went back to his hone conversation laughing out loud to his friend on the other end. We left him no tip for no service!

It's in front of Walmart on CR 466.
I can understand everyone having different views about Chengs. However I don't understand beating up on a poster who vented after what was clearly unpleasant for them.

After reading all the posts, I had to try Chengs for myself and went there for lunch today.
The food and service were excellent. For $5.95 I had a great lunch. The waiter was exceptional.
I will definitely go back. I feel if I spilled my soup (which was served hot), they would have been there to help.

I would agree. The spilling of the soup was probably a very unpleasant situation for this woman. What I hear though, is that she wanted more concern from the manager and waitor and she felt "brushed off". They really should have tried to find someone to clean the surrounding area..NOT her lap. If I had spilled my soup, I would have bolted for the bathroom and used paper towels or napkins that were on the table. It sounded like she was just sitting there waiting for the cleanup crew to assist her. Maybe the restaurant feared another "McDonald's hot coffee-spill lawsuit" and didn't want to fuss too much over it. Maybe she was rude with her demeaner. It's just so hard to say. But, if HER experience was so terrible, I could see her not returning or perhaps writing a letter of her bad experience to the owner/manager. NO ONE IS PERFECT! But to POST to all of The Villages not to go there because SHE spilled her soup, would sabotage their business because of HER unpleasant experience.
I think this may bring MORE business to Cheng's because of people's curiosity. She may have given them FREE advertising. LOL

Strange that you should tell this story. About a year ago while dining at Chengs, I witnessed the same scenerio at another table. The gentlman kept asking for help to clean up the soup and the Mgr threw him a towel and then paper towels.
This apparently is how they treat all their customers..Not a good way to do business..
There are other places where we can be treated with a little more dignity..dont need Cheng....:rant-rave:

This is starting to sound like a Saturday Night Sitcom. I'm beginning to think that either the soup bowl is not sturdy enough or too rocky OR there should be bibs with catch-pockets for the elderly that can't keep a bowl of soup steady. You can turn your bib over and spill it back into the bowl. Voila! Imagine waiters handing out bibs to everyone that orders bowls of soup? If restaurants have bibs for lobster eaters, perhaps it's time for bibs to be handed out to soup eaters. Now..another technique is putting a towel between yourself and the soup ON the table. Especially if one's stomach protrudes with tire-like dimensions. :a20:
