Victory Garden in TV

I have heard a rumor that we may be getting a site for all of us to do a Victory Garden in The Villages.

I was just wondering what you were going to plant?

I am a tomato person myself. Who is going to raise the chickens? I don't mind canning and freezing. But I am not getting to know the chickens.

Any favorite vegetables or fruits?

graciegirl, although not my "cup of tea", I'm sure someone will wish to plant ganja. I can think of some folks right now who are getting their gardening tools ready.

Oh Gracie, I hope your right. I would love to have a garden again.

Hopefully it will be in Heavenly Hadley so we don't have to travel too far.

I myself love all veggies to plant except corn!! I have never been successful with corn. Love to plant zucchini, pumpkins, eggplants, peppers, herbs, of course, tomatoes, especially grape tomatoes, and of course, FLOWERS!

All this from a girl from da Bronx???

I'm told that it is similar to watercress and that Bill Clinton, while in the White House, had his gardener plant some. His chef added some to the brownies but Bill insists he didn't swallow. But, like I said, it's not my "cup of tea"!

Well, Baby, it WAS inhale for him in college but in later life it was too many McDonalds and browines. Yummy! (Poor ol' Bill; in retrospect he wasn't all that bad) oh, oh, this is bordering on the political so I'll just ask for some of those tomatoes from GG and Jojo. Any habanero pepper lovers out there? :pepper2:

Now back to corn. I am not the gardener that John N is and I hope he will jump in here and straighten this out about corn.

I understand that there is a boy corn and a girl corn and that they have to be planted close together so they can exchange pollen.

Am I right or wrong John N?

I also was taught that the best corn in the world is grown in Ohio and that there is a state law that says you must eat it the same day it is picked. It is yummmmmmy!

Gracie, you are right. They need to be planted close together for pollenation and also as close in verticle & horizontal rows as well. Done all that, and the only thing I pollenate are the worms..... I had beautifully shaped ears and very healthy stalks, but as soon as I peel down the leaves, nothing but worms, no kernals. That's it, I give up. Tore up the corn fields and planted pumpkins in their place. They were very easy and fruitful and fun to grow.

Wow, this is the first time I've missed spellchecker. :cus: I see a lot of errors but can't figure out what they are??? Anyway, you get my drift. :shrug:

There is a place in the Villages where people do plant things, and I believe donate them to the needy. If I remember correctly, it's somewhere near the woodshop. Our rep showed it to us when we were there.

You're right. There's quite a good-sized garden more or less behind the Woodworker's shop on Rolling Acres Road. They support various soup kitchens, etc., which is a Good Thing!
