My Facebook Friend from the University of Minnesota Law School who has been an animal rights activist since I knew her in 1988-1989 had this on her Page. I hope US States will follow. Yeah...I love pets and have had a few wonderful companions over the years....but since they can not identify themselves as individuals and only respond to stimuli and millions of years of instinct imprinting they are not sentient beings. I hope the sane, common sensical and sentient beings among us realize that those after this type of law are basing their reasoning on their heart only...
I can not imagine a dog suing the owner in court for using harsh words or asking for a trial separation.....

Just think about one not wanting to be neutered and letting someone else decide who gets her children. It is too much for me. I don't want to add any more sentient beings into my worries.

I doubt if many are going to get away in US State Courts with putting too many rights in the paws of dogs.
Interesting if you look at the National Geographic article I have linked that discusses veterinarians' fears about being sued for malpractice based on elevated worth of pets if they are seen as sentient beings. I remember getting this announcement from my alma mater-- the University of Denver-- about a new professorship in Animal Rights Law they have. https://www.law.du.edu/documents/news/aldf-press-release.pdf
This is where I got my MA in Librarianship and Information Management in May 1984 but I did talk to their very nice Law Librarian, Al Coco., Jr.'s whose work on making the law more accessible to lay people I really admired and it fit in with my concerns about the accessibility of practical materials for survivors/victims of crimes in or through libraries which I started to investigate on February 28, 1976 while trying to find information to help my fellow Earl Wooster High School students deal with the murder investigation of the 2-24-1976 slaying of Michelle Mitchell.

There are situations when it would be important and those that it would not. In Palm Harbor our neighbor bred pit bulls. Stupidly he would drag the dogs along while driving his car around the neighborhood. He ended up dragging one of the pit bulls along the road and scraping up its paws pretty badly. Enough so, that a boy called the cops and got them to just follow the blood trail back. The man lost these dogs but soon got some more if I remember correctly. You give dogs more rights than just being property then some animal advocate could step in and prevent this from happening.
I remember this because the animal rights' people targeted my neighbor's house due to the newspaper and TV news reports about this. Some tense weeks because of this.
There should be limitations on just how far the animal rights people should go. Using common sense would be quite good.
This Palm Harbor neighbor was a house owner by a defense lawyer so we got some very troublesome neighbors there; a few good ones too though. The defense lawyer probably rented this house out to some of his former clients or friends of clients.

True, but this goodness can quickly be exterminated by non-sentient "human" beings bent on beheading, crucifying, mass bombing/shooting, and incinerating thousands of innocent, unarmed people (as in 9-11-2001) and dozens in Paris.
The current focus on "feelings" is quickly outdone by the facts and reality of enemy brutality toward both sentient and non-sentient beings:

These are separate issues. And only some Muslims feel very strongly about dogs and cats.
ISIS and their ilk are some of the worst human beings to be on this planet. It is like judging all Germans by what they did in 1939-1945. Much of the behavior of ISIS belongs in the worst periods of human history.

If that definition is legally extended to animals then it won't matter if the president gives tom turkey a reprieve the turkey will sue for infliction of emotional distress. and dog owners be careful because you may get sued for not providing a safe space for your pet
I smell PETA behind this movement.
This world is going from the sublime to the ridiculous

That's a dead link.
And there are going to be bad people in every organization.

I'm not sure what PETA has to do with this thread, but the information in your post is very misleading. Your website link led me to this clarification which portrays an entirely different picture.
"That either group was on such a list in the first place is troublesome in itself. Regardless, The US Justice Department announced today that activists from both PETA and Greenpeace, as well as other groups, had been "improperly" monitored in the years following the September 11th attacks. Members and activists were placed on the FBI's Terrorist Watch list for "factually weak" reasons between 2001 and 2006, a new report reveals. And the kicker is, the agency never found any evidence that either group was planning anything other than nonviolent protest:The Washington Post reports (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/20/AR2010092003100.html?hpid=topnews) that the "FBI improperly opened and extended investigations of some U.S. activist groups and put members of an environmental advocacy organization on a terrorist watch list, even though they were planning nonviolent civil disobedience, the Justice Department said Monday."

I'm not even sure that dogs should be recognized as sentient beings. But I am sure that dogs should be treated with respect. Many people regard dogs as "disposable", like a dirty kleenex.
There are hundreds of thousands of dogs that have been surrended to shelters. Some people drop a dog off at a shelter when they have a baby, as "too much work". And some even leave a dog behind in an empty apartment when they move. There are so many stories of severe animal abuse that it's heartbreaking. I won't even discuss them here.

That's French law. I too believe that the law can go too far in other directions. People look for too easy answers when there usually are not any.

Mephistopheles, my older brother Robert's huge tomcat, used to beg for chicken from me. He would stick a claw in my knee from under the table to make sure that I did not forget him. Kind of hard to not notice Mephistopheles especially with a name like that.
