Old Phone Books

Why is it so difficult for a lot of residents to not understand simple instructions? I speak of the practice of residents leaving their old phone books at the postal stations. For several years the Daily Sun has posted the proper way to dispose of the phone books by placing them in the normal trash pick up. My postal station it located in the Palo Alto neighborhood. This evening a friend and neighbor and I discussed the pile of phone books left at this facility overnight. My friend said nearly every day he picks up the many phone books and takes them home where he places them in his trash. He also pointed out that he personally had posted a very obvious sign asking people to put their old phone books in the normal trash and please do not leave them at the postal station. Residents had left the old books right under the sign. Crazy huh ???

They are NOT old books, but new books that came in the mail. Some

Your link says to put unwanted phone books in the recycle. They could be new or old. They didn't come in the mail. They were dropped off at the residences.

My point was don't put them in the trash.:doh:

A couple of weeks ago new phone books came in the mail. There were large piles of books at the Polo Ridge Postal (all new). People took them out of their boxes and piled them on the ground. I watched them.

Warren, you do realize that these are the same residents that cannot navigate roundabouts, that cannot park within the lines of a parking spot, that drive drunk, that save seats at the squares, that cannot pick up dog poop, that cannot fix divots or ball marks, that don't stop at stop signs, that will praise Law Enforcement Officers (until they get a ticket), etc., etc., etc....

Same folks who won't take junk mail home and put into recycling bags for proper pick up and recycling Instead they stand there at postal stops and place the junk mail into trash containers that don't wind up being recycled but go to landfill with other trash.

One good solution is to not print as many phone books in the first place. It's obvious many people don't want them so cut the production down every year...

My wife is very adamant about bringing all the junk mail home to be recycled. Good point for bringing this up.

If you don't want these phone books, please go to yellowpages opt out.com (all one word).
It takes two minutes to register and you can opt out of 5-6 phone books depending on where you live. I haven't received any of the phone books in years. Save some trees.

Thanks for the tip! I used it, so we'll see if that stops the phone books from arriving....

The opt-out works great - EXCEPT for that phone book that was delivered to my mail box last month(?). I sent a note to the opt-out people and they said that sometimes the USPS delivery gets over looked and they will look into it.

Did you opt out on the website that I posted ?
Unfortunately there are several website that allow you to opt out and some are not so good. I have used the one that I posted and have given the website to friends and family. When you opt out on this website you get an email confirmation immediately. I have not received any phone books at my door in years, neither has any of my family or friends that used this website. I have , once in a while, received a phone book in my Villages mailbox, but I think that is just because the post office delivers @300 phone books to each postal station and tells the workers to put one in every box. Please go to the website that I posted and opt out again. If everyone in the Villages did this it would save SO MANY trees. Thanks.

I think the original post had to do with folks leaving phone books piled up at postal stop that do not go to recycling center. So if you succeed in opting out or not, the point is don't leave the books at the postal stop and while you think about it, take your junk mail home and place it into your recycling bags. You are paying for this, so don't leave the expense of cleaning up your mess to others. Thanks for your cooperation.

Rayschic, if you opt out on that web site, does that mean you will not receive The Villages phone book? That's the one I want to get.

The Villages phone book is not included on this website so you will still get that one. Most of the phone books on the website are published by DEX. When you register with the site, it will show you the 5-6 books that you are scheduled to receive and you just choose which ones you want or don't want.
