We are relatively new (5 months) permanent residents of The Villages from New England. My husband is a VERY big paperback book reader. Where we came from we would bring the books to the Veteran's Hospital that had a library for the patients. We checked the VA Clinic here and they don't have a library. We know there's Goodwill or the Thrift Stores but we were wondering more about nursing homes or veteran's homes or hospice care where we could just bring? Anyone know? Thanks and continued good health in the New Year.

If money is no object, then just disregard my comments. My wife is a big reader and she takes her finished books to the book store in the Colony Plaza Shopping Center. It's in the parking lot in a separate building, between Publix and McDonalds.
They'll give you 25% credit off the list price of the book. You then can use that to purchase books from their store, which are priced at 50% off published price. So essentially a $10 book is priced $5, and you get $2.50 when you take it back and resell it to the store. They have new books located in the front, and they have a decent selection of used books. My wife loves reading true crime, which they have a section dedicated. She has a problem finding books she hasn't read because since "In Cold Blood" came out in the 60's she has read just about every true crime book.

The Mark Twain Library at the Paradise Center in the historic side of The Villages loves to get donations of used books - both hardback and paperback.
It is a great free lending library to visit for Villages residents.

You could see if the Mark Twain Library wants them. Mark Twain Library runs on volunteers, donations - The Villages Daily Sun: Villages (http://www.thevillagesdailysun.com/news/villages/article_d602ffe0-b96a-11df-a668-001cc4c03286.html)

the library at Pinellas also will take them. They have a great resale store--paperbacks for 50 cents.

Lady Lake Public Library (http://www.lakeline.lib.fl.us/libraries/lady_lake_public_library.aspx)
This is the public library I often use. They too have a book sale room and you can donate books there. Not sure about how they handle the receipts for tax purposes.
I have not donated a lot of my books since the move from Palm Harbor, Florida in June of 2005 where I gave a good portion of my library to Safety Harbor Public Library, Oldsmar Library and the Tarpon Springs Public Library. I did not get along all that well with the Palm Harbor Library Director Gene Coppola so decided to donate my books where I felt I was treated fairly. So, I do not really know how the tax receipts work for donated materials here in the Villages.

It's very caring of you to think about donating books to nursing homes, veterans or hospice.
You could call Promise House at 352-689-6400 to ask about donations.
Also Cornerstone at 866-742-6655, Brookdale Place at Freedom Pointe 866-824-8174 or TV Hospice House at 888-728-6234.
Or send a PM to Jane032657 - she would know who would be grateful for your books.

You can also donate to the annual book sale at the Savannah Center, put on by the Santiago Women's Club. This year the sale will be February 29th from 9am to 2pm. Proceeds benefit local schools. To donate, please send me a private message with your phone number and I will get in touch.
