yes, i also didn't realize it was the new season as when they announced it originally, january sounded so far away! and here we are...enjoyed both the pre-show and the first episode of the new season....will be sorry to see it end.
if you have ever seen the 1954 film The Leopard with Burt Lancaster, the theme was the changing order of society in Italy with the demise of the nobility and the ascension of the common man. the same kind of melancholy which saw the end of the Edwardian and Victorian periods and the advent of modern times. funny how although all of us "average" people benefited from these changes, we somewhere deep in our collective psyche seem to still long for those glory days of grand estates, noble titles and correct appearances. why do you think that is?

Not sure if I had unreasonable expectations or what, but I did not enjoy the first episode of season 6 as I did the other seasons. Seemed choppy and too soap opera like. Hope I am not disappointed in the rest of the season as I will definitely continue to watch cause I'm hooked!

I liked both the pre-show and the actual one. Didn't have expectations so I wasn't disappointed. As for the "glory days" of the ubber rich and their grand living....I think we like it because it's glamourized through stories but in actual life I'd suspect it's not so much that. I wouldn't want to be in the "working class" underneith these types. The British class system (and others) really made the common man subservient and "less than". It's fun though to watch in a story-form...or to read about it.

I thought it was a great first episode. So many new stories developed to play out in this last season. I thought the "chamber maid" appearing to blackmail Mary was in keeping with the changing times in the working class, and Mary's Father's reaction was also very modern for that time frame. I liked that it was so fast paced, but I'm getting fed up with Bate's wife whining about not having a child - could do without that. With the news they had she should have been grinning from ear to ear!
My only big disappointment was putting the Long Island Medium (love that show) opposite Downton in the same time slot. I really wanted to see Sheldon from the Big Bang get a reading - oh well, it will come around and around and around and I'm bound to see it sometime.

The writers certainly are tidying things up rather quickly.
