Very fun book by a very enjoyable writer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Bryson
The movie was OK but the book is wonderful.
I use his A Short History of Nearly Everything https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Short_History_of_Nearly_Everything for reference but plan to read it too.

I just watched the movie and especially enjoyed it knowing my son had just last year hiked the entire AT. I called him to make sure he watches it because I know he'd remember many parts of the trail shown in the movie.

I was disappointed by the movie. Wild with Reese Witherspoon is a much better 'trail' movie. It is set on the Pacific Crest Trail.

I did like Wild and have not read that book either. WILD - Cheryl Strayed (http://www.cherylstrayed.com/wild_108676.htm)
Into the Wild is another one with a book and movie both of which I have been through. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1845.Into_the_Wild

Read the book years ago. Unfortunately the movie will cause a severe overload of the beginning and ending spots on the trail this hiking season. The trail is already over crowded and all the new thru hiker wannabes will just create more problems.

The trail does begin and end in small state parks which suffer greatly. They are considering relocating the northern terminus awW from katahdin entirely.

The description of Mary Ellen's antics in the book is hilarious. I remember her showing up in the movie and she was annoying but the book creates a far more irritating creature.
What (http://appalachiantrials.com/what-a-walk-in-the-woods-gets-wrong-about-thru-hiking-and-the-appalachian-trail/)
What's his line about meeting the stupidest people in the world? Do his other travel books also have these kind stories?
