South Africa Travel

I will be traveling to South Africa (Cape Town and Johannesburg) in the near future and am looking for advice from those who have been. I know the currency is Rand. When travelling I usually use my credit card exclusively; however, I've heard that Africa does not use credit cards much. They are basically a cash only. From your experience, is this true? If so, how much cash would I need to take? I will be in Cape Town for a week and in Johannesburg for a week going on safaris. My lodging, transportation, and most meals are taken care of.

Do you take pictures or videos when you travel? What kind of camera do you carry?

Three years ago we went to Spain and Italy and my wife took all the pictures with her phone. I had no interest and now I regret that. I can't remember all that we saw and did. I think it would have been interesting to have a small camera that shoots video and once an hour the alarm would go off and where ever we were I would pick up the camera and do a 360 for just for just a minute. I think that would keep me in the moment and have something to think about and share later.
