After changing my residency to Florida 2 years ago I am very concerned about the violent crime in this state. If you get out of Villages it is a cesspool in many areas. At the risk of sounding racist the overwhelming percentage of this criminal activity is committed by young, black men. After seeing a story from Detroit about a mother of two being shot in the head during an attempted carjacking I see Florida is doing a study on why minorities are stopped more often than whites are for seatbelt violations. I think political correctness has our priorities screwed up. If you are carjacking someone or stealing a car you still need to where your seatbelt.

You have a valid concern. On the other hand, stats show that states that have more gun laws, ie. CCW, have reduced crime. Unless you are totally adverse to guns, you could obtain your CCW. That will make you feel a bit more secure with the knowledge that you are not totally at the mercy of circumstances beyond your control. There is crime in every state and every country. It is how we deal with it that makes us civilized or not. A police officer can not be with you at all times, and is reactionary more than not. You could hire a body guard, which would cost an arm and a leg.
Living in the Villages has a certain amount of security, implied at the very least. We have very low criminal statistics compared to the surrounding state. If there is/was any circumstance where moving to a crime free area is possible, the Villages is probably one of the most secure or maybe the most safest area to live in.
Addressing PC when dealing with profiling is a can of worms that will elicit a ton of arguing comments on here. Personally, I have no problem with controlled profiling. It is done successfully in many areas. Israel profiles and has the most secure airports. Profiling for the unusual is unfortunate but works for the majority. That's my opinion, that is backed up by historic success. It is unfortunate for the innocent that might be embarrassed, but if it protects the majority, then one should be willing to accept it. I doubt if blacks are profiled and singled out for just for seat belt violations, but maybe they were profiled for another reason and the seatbelt violation was the swiftest means to make a traffic stop to check out the occupants. A black is not innocent due to profiling. If they have a seatbelt infraction, then they are still guilty regardless of implied prejudice. If I am cruising a construction zone after dark and a cop stops me for having a taillight out, so be it. I may have not been doing anything wrong, but I did have a light out. PC is blown way out of proportion. But, that is my opinion. The ones that complain about profiling are the sames ones that will call the cops about some shady characters hanging around on their corner down the street. They may be selling drugs, or not. But, the neighbor that doesn't want ethnic groups to be profiled will suddenly forget that if the cops allow a gathering on the corner. Perhaps that cops have no justifiable reason to stop and question them, or even observe them due to being accused of "profiling." :police:

At any rate, The Villages is a pretty decent place to live with very little crime. Be safety vigilant and do not worry about that which you cannot change.

The reason there are more minorities pulled over for seat belt violations is that more don't put on the seatbelt. Perhaps if they did they wouldn't get pulled over so often.

As to the crime you're worried about it happens anywhere you have a high population density...and a contributing factor to the high density are pockets of low to no income. Low to no income = more crime. The only way to escape it is to move to the middle of nowhere.

Keep your eyes peeled...
