I know many people have posted about the overcrowding at the Colony Plaza Publix shopping area. However today, was by far the worst I have ever seen,(in the six yrs I lived here) I am sure the Super Bowl, has something to do with it, but not only were there no parking places, there were no grocery baskets, when I finally found a place to park, by Beall's I walked to the store to find no baskets, , the aisles were so crowded you could not even get down them, the lines to check out were backed up so far, people were blocking the main aisle . People were raging, complaining and literally I thought we would have a riot in the store. Now that S of 466A is almost complete the population has grown, and than we have the snowbirds, renters and Fruitland park residents adding to the problem, Why didn't the Villages realize that with new growth shopping is at a premium, The Publix on 44 is virtually empty, and I now plan to drive the extra distance to shop there (for my own sanity) until the mass leaves. The Villages did a poor job planning on the additional homes with no shopping available, except for Colony. Patience is non existent and the rudeness and actions of those I witnessed today, was disgraceful. People you are retired, chill out and smile. This is the South, and no one is in a hurry, if you don't like it stay up North.

Perhaps the new Publix just east of the Rohan Regional will help. Remember Fruitland Park was an addition that was not in the Orginal plans for The Villages. We went to Winn Dixie this week---we intend to go again---it is not the old Winn Dixie of years gone by. Really a nice Supermarket IMHO.

The Publix on 466 is very busy as well as is Winn Dixie near Lake Sumter Landing.
We are in the midst of the high season and as it's been pointed out, Super Bowl Weekend. This too shall pass.

On a personal level the drop is sales has been a good thing. TV Sales is discounting heavily from last years prices. I will be having another meeting with my TV Sales agent next month to discuss some of the more heavily discounted areas. I’ll be able to get a larger home this year than with the same money last year. Luck shines my way on a very very very rare occasion.

I agree with you Chatbrat, I was on the road all day today from early morning and the traffic was crazy. I was from one end to the other and it didn't matter, everything was totally backed up.
The entrance to Canal Street from Stillwater was back up to the roundabout, so I took off and went the long way.
Turning left onto Morse from 466 was so backed up, I went all the way to 466A just to avoid that turn. At least its less frustrating, especially because I don't mind driving.
If I go to Publix (almost any of them), its either before 9am or after 7pm, just to avoid crowds. Its certainly not the way I planned it when I moved here 7 years ago. Kinda disappointing.
I've thought about relocating but I just don't think i have the energy anymore to take the packing and relocating, so I'll just continue to do things that keep me sane. :rant-rave::cus::MOJE_whot::loco:

Publix on 44 was not empty...the effects of SuperBowl Sunday weekend is in effect on top of the month of February....the busiest tourist month in the State of Florida, not just here....relax....in a few weeks things will calm down a bit....this place is so unique and wonderful everyone wants to be here. I do agree that another supermarket in the Colony-Fruitland Park area would do a booming business right from opening day....an opportunity awaits.

Us too! We were at the Colony Publix tonight at 6:30. No problem getting a space for the car, getting a cart, getting around the store or checking out. I'll repeat what many here say, "We're retired. Enjoy life" Why is everyone rushing to the store during the busiest part of the day? The store is open from 7 AM to 9 PM. Go play golf or line dance during the day and shop at night when it is a pleasure :)

Take a big risk and try something different. Shop in the evening or before 9am.

This is what I understand about Wegmans not coming to Florida. You have to have a warehouse, supply depot. If you have seen the supply warehouses for WD and Publix you can understand the cost of setting up for business. The further away you are to supply your stores the higher the cost which adds to the retail prices. Once the depot has been built, then comes choosing locations and building retail outlets.
All not chosen lightly.

Oh, I agree, Gracie, Publix has the greatest staff and management. Since developing my serious back issues, the staff goes out of their way to help me and my handicapped ex-husband who shops with me. I can't thank them enough for being alert as to when we have a problem lifting or we get tired. They are super great.

I never have a problem getting on the executive courses after 6:30PM. Also, try Walmart at 1AM. No problem at all. It's your fault that you are doing things during normal times when it's convenient. And don't forget, there are many ideal parking spaces in the town squares after 9PM. Enjoy!

When we return to the land of Kroger, Publix is one of the things I miss about TV.
Kroger is turning into a control-freak company. I do not like their business-model.
Kroger is claiming more and more shelf space for their store brands. -- Not only that, but the label logo on a Kroger store brand has been designed to mimic the real thing. If you are in a hurry, you can easily grab the wrong one. Examples follow............
I know someone whose potato salad was not its same wonderful self because he had grabbed what he thought was Hellman's. He peeled all those potatoes and hard-boiled those eggs and gathered his other ingredients, and in good faith, mixed it all up, only to discover his potato salad just was not right. He was mystified until his wife looked in the refrigerator and there found the smirking jar of Kroger brand mayo in its dark blue and white label, laid out the same way as the long-trusted Hellman's.
And......I caught Mr. Boomer, just in time, when I saw in the cart that he had grabbed something (gasp) in a Charmin disguise. The labels even had the color-coding choices.
I am not harping on store brands in general. I just think Kroger is using gueriilla tactics in marketing their store brand, as they hog more and more shelf space, making it harder to find the tried-and-true.
Yes. I know other stores do this, too, but Kroger is my frame of reference. And now, to heap insult upon injury, Kroger is filling some of their stores half full of furniture and clothes. I do not want to buy a couch at Kroger.
I know this rant is off-topic. And I know Kroger does not care what I think. But I feel better. As I have been typing, I have been working up the courage to go out and about on a bunch of errands, including going to Publix.......but I think I can justify avoiding Colony and go to Spanish Plaines. (Yes. That is how it is spelled.)

I went to Publix yesterday morning, and I thought it was pretty busy, but I didn't have any trouble finding a parking space, but I always park a few aisles away from the entrance. I got a shopping cart from a guy bringing them in from the parking lot. I shopped all over the store. The only big group was near the deli counter.
I will say that they were doing inventory and that might have caused a few problems.
I really think Publix does a great job handling the shoppers.

Parking spaces, grocery carts [large and small] and stocked shelves available at Publix and Winn-Dixie on Bichara Blvd [near Spanish Springs]! Or have I just been fortunate at the various times I have shopped those stores? lol After reading the tales of shopping at Colony - grocery or otherwise - am happy to have purchased a home on the historic side! Yes, but that's the nature of a business. Sales less operations less start up cost = profit. If it is profitable, they may do it. I doubt the cost of a warehouse would be the limiting factor. Add to that Wegman's would blow away the competition down here

Wow, the extra distance....it is so far.....lol. Colony has been jammed for a couple years....nothing new. You have Winn Dixie in Pinnellas. Publix in Traverse, and a new Publix down from Rohan. Then there are Poblix and Winn Dixie's that are out of the dome. I think that if you want to live here then you need to adjust....you said that no one is in a hurry but it seems that you are or you would take whatever time it takes to find and shop your stores.

'tis the season, as they say! I was in Colony (though not Publix) yesterday and the parking lot was very full...that said though I got an immediate spot right in front of Beall's Outlet. Lady in car in front of me had by-passed it and got mad when I pulled into it. I'm not sure what her issue was as she came around the corner, same as me and I had no problem pulling in.
Was "out and about" midday today and yes there was traffic and loads of folks shopping but one finds the better roads to travel (the ones less traffic on).
I never go to the Publix in Colony to do "big" grocery shopping just because of the volumn of people there. I shop at others within T.V. and haven't had an issue such as was stated here! Forget Aldi on Wednesdays (when their flier comes out)...probably the same for other stores when their ads come out. Shop early or later and it's better!!
We've not gotten to the point of thinking "someplace else" is a better place to live. The Villages has been a great experience for the 6+ yrs we've been here. Traffic?? Try Orlando or any other metro city and re-think that ours is terrible!!

Regarding the increased (seasonal and overall) population and the resulting crowding, I have to wonder. Do people really think that by complaining about it here something's going to change? It is what it is. I don't think that suggestions that others leave so that you don't feel crowded are helpful. If it has gotten to the point where you just can't stand it anymore, I respectfully suggest that perhaps its you that needs to move.

The week before Super Bowl is extremely busy at all Publix Stores. I worked at Mulberry Grove Publix for several years, many of which were in the Deli. Just breathe, shop earlier (most stores open at 7am) or after dinner. Relax. I can assure you all of the Publix associates are doing the very best they can. And Publix Stores are employee owned.

....Kroger is claiming more and more shelf space for their store brands....

Interesting you should mention that. My niece from Rochester was just here and mentioned that Wegmans was now doing the same thing to excess. She was not happy!!

We are one of the dreaded snowbirds and shop after 7 pm. Not a problem parking or shopping. Perhaps the volume of motorists and shoppers was also higher today due to the chili cookout at Sumter and the rain.

We went to Southern Trace Publix today.. no carts.. parking at a premium.. I thought - uh oh, this will be fun,, but I have to say everyone was in a good mood.. buying their Super Bowl snacks and patiently waiting in line ( which moved at a normal pace).. I didn't do the deli, which looked extremely buzy, but I must say, the experience shopping was not as bad as I had at first impression.I survived and so did husband.. I think you make it grumpy if you go in the store grumpy..

You handled your visit extremely well, as I think most of us would. And I also think, the "colony" experience described early on was probably more like you described, and not the catastrophe that was implied.

I too was up in the Amherst/ Tonawanda area outside of Buffalo this Fall, and noticed all the 'Wegman store brands'. I will not usually buy that junk either. I am disappointed in Wegmans for this strategy. I really hadn't noticed it till NYguy's post above. One more thng to gripe about, want to hear about my Comcast modem slow wifi with no resolution? And now Wegmans, life is hardly worth living. Also the price of laundered and press shirts is too high!!

The Publix on 44 is virtually empty, and I now plan to drive the extra distance to shop there (for my own sanity) until the mass leaves. .
Traverse Plaza is far from empty.....the best bet is shop after 7 pm

Superbowl....Christmas.....Thanksgiving...... You got to expect this heavier traffic in stores. Plan ahead and don't do last minute shopping.
The exception to this would be an approaching hurricane which if, though rare in this part of the state, you ever experienced, is a rush for food and water way exceeding these holidays but thankfully with fewer residents here to compete because it's during he summer .

Publix has now expanded to Va.
Wikipedia "In February 2016, Publix announced their entry into the Virginia market, with the signing of two store leases, the first in Bristol, Virginia, scheduled to open in late 2016, and the second in metropolitan Richmond, scheduled for 2018"

Since we eat late around 8 ish, we usually don't have issues with resturants or going to grocery after dinner. But that's just us, either shop first thing in am or just before close. Gives you less time in store for that impulse buy, and sticking to my list
