My husband and I and neighbors went to the Hernando County Fine Arts Council Jazz Festival at Weeki Wachi Springs today. It was about an hour and a half from The Villages. What a pleasant surprise. The last time we were there was about 37 years ago---Found out today that this attraction is 57 yrs old. It was taken over today by Florida State Parks. The attraction obviously needs updating and hopefully the State Park system will be able to accomplish this. They had young mermaids but the most amazing thing to us was that they had some of the "original" mermaids--the oldest was 78 years old. The youngest was 52 yrs old. They put on a show that was similar to the original shows--demonstrated eating and drinking under water. Also wore the original "mermaid constumes with the tail" and did some of the original choreographed routines. This is "Old Florida" and certainly needs to be saved. The Jazz Festival was really nice. $4.00 admission/$1.00 to park--food from area restaurants was very reasonable---as was beer/wine.

We took a nice kayak ride down the Weeki Wachi a year or two ago. Its almost like a float trip, not a lot of paddling involved. They pick you up at the end when you've finished, and take you back to your car. It was lovely - we saw manatees, tons of fish, and many beautiful birds.

Rekop - where do you start that? Is it at the park or further up?
