Can any TOTVers recommend a reliable company that installs acrylic/vinyl windows on the lanai?

I'm not sure if you're aware, but glass is close to the same price as acrylic. And IMHO, much nicer. We just glassed in our lanai and added a birdcage. Love the results.

I understand that glass has tax consequences. Were you able to quantify what that was for the lanai (i.e., excluding the birdcage)?

Just keep in mind the acrylic/vinyl windows have a life span of about ten years then must be replaced. This may sway you towards glass. Glass lasts much longer. I wish I knew this when I put in acrylic the frist time around.

Hi,

I suggest glass windows. I do screen room conversions. I have done many in TV and have references. I live in Chatham and have been doing work here for 11 years. Check out my price.

Thanks

Where can someone check your prices

I chose to go with the acrylic windows. To my understanding, Glass windows make your taxes go up because it is considered a glass room.

Whites Aluminum added our new birdcage, 16 x 21, and glassed in our lanai. (Cliff at 352-516-2653 does estimates). They replaced the existing door in the lanai with stackable doors. So that the lanai now opens up to the birdcage.

We love it!

We went with Whites Aluminum with glass enclosure. Outside the entrance door we were told that it's mandatory to install a light too. "CODE" We were quite pleased with the completion. Now if we were only there to enjoy it. :sigh:

We're considering enclosing our lanai and for those of you who have glass enclosures I have a question.

It's my understanding, based on what different companies quoting told us, that you do not have the flexibility to slide the glass panels in many different configurations as you do with acrylic. We were told for each sliding glass panel there is a fixed glass panel and a screen similar to what we have on our homes. So you can only open the glass panel in one direction. Is this true? To me that would be a drawback to configuring the best air flow.

Thanks for your comments.

Not sure what you mean. I have four "stackable" doors so that almost one whole wall of the lanai is open to the birdcage. Plus windows that open.
No lack of air flow!

We don't have a birdcage so would not have the stackable doors. We would only need the windows around the perimeter of the lanai. My interest is in your windows "that open". Do they all slide to either the right or left as acrylic panels do or only in one direction?

By the way, this is how Cliff with Whites explained it to us, that only one side of each glass window moves, but with acrylic both sides move.

I may not be explaining this correctly so if anyone else understands what I'm trying to ask please feel free to join the conversation!

We had the full view acrylic windows installed. They move either side. It is like a full glass door but windows. Wanted to see more of the landscaping. We just couldnt decide on the color of acrylic. Jammie Stevens Construction did ours. I highly recommend his company. He has done a few projects for us. He also drywalled the arylic room. With knock down spray and painted. Tile too. 308-6968. he is listed in the Daily Sun.

we used cook aluminum/thumper's retractable garage screen doors, 352 342 7809.

we had used martin aluminum for another project before we found this business. but thumper's saved us a bundle over the other quote we had! and the product is the same!!!

am sure you will get lots of recommendations, and you should follow through with at least a few of them for a price comparison, i strongly recommend you include this business in the comparison.

sorry i don't have an opinion on absheir for you.
