Anybody called to Bushnell for Jury duty This Tues the 16th? Thought someone might like to carpool if so.

You might want to reconsider just in case you get picked for a trial and the other person doesn't. The other person would have to wait for you and depending on the case they might be waiting awhile.
It has been my experience that they excuse the jurors that aren't picked at noon.
Just a thought.

Tell me if they still have the coffee pot that sounds like a moaning dog? About half the people when I had jury duty back around May 19, 2014 were from the Villages or near here. https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/villages-florida-non-villages-discussion-93/anyone-totv-know-sumter-county-clerk-courts-gloria-r-hayward-114277/?highlight=jury+duty

Many were excused though before we even got started for various reasons such as the 70 or over rule of not having to do Jury Duty. Jury Duty - Courts - Sumter County Clerk of the Courts (http://www.sumterclerk.com/index.cfm/jury-duty)

Thanks for the info.
I don't drive often and was dreading going down but Hubby says he will take me. I have lost my peripheral vision on the left eye (till it is ready for surgery) and it makes me a very cautious driver.

I'd like to applaud your willingness to perform your civic duty. I was selected for grand jury duty once. It was an eye opening experience.

Good luck with this. I am glad that you are going down there. I usually get bumped as soon as they hear I have a Law Degree. We did not get to that point in May 2014 as they excused the whole Jury Pool back then because the defendant accepted a Plea Deal which took all morning though. It seemed we were sitting there for a few hours waiting for something to happen. We never got to the Voir Dire part of the Jury Duty where they ask paneled jury members questions. This is by the lawyers as well as the judge.

The only other time I have been called they were looking for an ethnically diverse jury as it was being demanded by the defendant and they thought I was asian so I was let go as soon as they saw I wasn't.

The only problem with jury duty is do you want to be evaluated by 12 people who were not smart enough to beat jury duty ?
By the way I served on Blue Ribbon Jurys in NYC--that was when I was on the taxpayer's dime.

I wanted to get on Jury Duty the 4 or so times I have been summoned in CA and FL but have always been booted for some reason. I did fill out an excuse for my first written Jury Summons from Sumter County as this was close to us moving from Palm Harbor in 2005 and I did not want to go over some of the problems I had had there with my 224 613 Project. So, I did outline them slightly and they excused me for that Summons. I received another one in 2014. My guess is the first one was around 2007.
In 2014, I did sent them a few e-mails about my 224 613 Project as well as I did not want to blindside the Court with it as it does involved the legal system from February 25, 1976 through now. Google Taltarzac725 and you should be able to tell what I am talking about with this 224 613 Project.
I did not tell the Federal Court in Ocala about this 224 613 Project for the January 2009 Jury Summons and I believe that the Federal Judge could tell I was hiding something which I was. I had no idea what kind of case this would turn out to be.
I get a Jury Summons about every 7 years on average.

I did get to see Avatar in 3-D up at the Ocala Hollywood 16 movie theater while the remaining picked jurors heard about the case of the Hispanic Claremont cop who claimed he had a right to write his police reports in Spanish and was also the target of harassment because of this belief. He lost his claim of employment discrimination violating Federal Laws.

You have misstated the likely case at which you were not a juror. It was not based on an officer wanting to write his reports in Spanish but rather an allegation of a supervising officer consistently discriminating against this policeman, mocking him and humiliating him in front of other officers. He never wanted to write his reports in Spanish nor did he believe he should be able to do so.

Radi has been Rodriguez's direct supervisor, with the authority to supervise and control all of the day-to-day operations of his unit. Throughout Radi's supervision of Rodriguez, he has subjected Rodriguez to severe and pervasive discrimination, based solely on Rodriguez's national origin. For example, Radi would make offensive and derogatory comments to Rodriguez about his national origin and ridicule and criticize his heritage on a daily and on-going basis. Radi would repeatedly taunt Rodriguez for using "Spanglish" in Rodriguez's written reports, and would humiliate Rodriguez by criticizing Rodriguez's English writing skills in front of other law enforcement officers.

I usually get booted from the jury by the defense because of 12 years as a police officer. Don't know why. I feel I have a better understanding of the rules of evidence and the concept of guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

You're in Florida now. Only six jurors are seated in the majority of felony cases — even in some of the most violent and serious crimes. I just finished 6 months of Grand Jury duty. We had 21 members. All of us equally stupid.

Rodriguez, hired in January 2004 and still employed by Clermont police, sought punitive and compensatory damages for "blatant" humiliation he said he endured from Radi, his patrol sergeant.
The lawsuit claimed Radi criticized Rodriguez' English, taunted him for using "spanglish" in written incident reports and directed him not to listen to " salsa" music in his patrol car, according to federal court documents.
The trial began Monday in federal court in Ocala.
Radi resigned last year while his police supervisors were investigating his role in the handling of a suspect who was arrested and then "un-arrested" in a DUI case. The suspect had been left unsupervised in a jail cell.
Clermont officials said Radi's conduct in that case violated department policies.
The discrimination case was filed in federal court after Rodriguez claimed he was bypassed for a promotion to field training officer, a position that includes a pay increase. Clermont police Chief Steve Graham and City Manager Wayne Saunders were among the witnesses who testified during the three-day trial.
We can take various quotes.
I am going by what I heard in that court room.
This is the case though.
I heard the Judge's outline of it and that is about all. I have seen the various press reports as well.
The Judge outlined the case to the Jury Panel and asked us questions about our experiences with police, whether we knew any of the people involved, etc.
From the article in the Orlando Sentinel it did involve Rodriquez using Spanish in his reports and the humiliation he experienced for using that language in these reports. Where do you get the idea that Rodriquez did not want to put Spanish in his reports????
I remember maybe one other Villager in that court room??? There was a woman Villager on the panel if I am remembering the people on there correctly. This was in January 2010.

Voir Dire the process of selecting a jury is indeed an interesting aspect of any trial, an art of sorts. I eventually concluded that I was lousy at selecting a jury Thank God my only role was in observing the selection.
One poster remark that as an LOE he would understand the law any would make an excellent juror. another remarked that he was rejected because he was a lawyer. Make sense but then there is always the other side of the argument about knowing so much about the law...and there is the rub
I would have selected that LOE and that lawyer onto a jury????????????????

I was on Jury Duty in Sonoma County around 1994 in Santa Rosa, CA and the woman lawyer from San Francisco stayed in the Jury Panel at least past my discussion of the 224 613 Project (I did not use those numbers) after the Prosecution challenged me. This was a sale of narcotics case. She could have been booted too after I left.
The Judge did say he say me hanging around the Law Library from time-to-time. This was when I was checking out what kind of materials they had of a practical nature for survivors/victims of crimes. Judge Antolini lauded for 40 years of service | The Press Democrat (http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/2186471-181/judge-antolini-lauded-for-40)
Mentioned the Project again in Pinellas County, FL. around 2002 (?) for yet another narcotics case. And away I went after the challenge. I do not remember who made that one. And I do not remember a Judge showing up at that stage.

Good for you Doug. It's not pleasant but it needs to be done for the sake of our justice system. So many do whatever they can to avoid jury duty. Was your term 2 weeks on front and back ends and 2 weeks in the middle? That was how the GJ term I served on was constructed.

We lived across the street from the Washoe County Jury Foreman. Up the street from a prominent lawyer Ron Bath who became a Pentagon Air Force General and down the street from a news anchor Bob Carroll. This was in Reno, Nevada.
The Washoe County Jury Foreman (Bruce? ) used to love playing with out pooch Ashes who would run across the street every chance she got to greet him.

I will PM you as this really is off topic of ride sharing for jury duty. My post was really meant for the general reader, to correct the impression that a policeman sued because he was told not to write his reports in English. You, being an attorney, are given extra consideration for authority in legal matters but the record is clear to those who want to read the actual pleadings which are linked above.

He was not told to write his reports in Spanish. He was harassed and made a mockery of because he used Spanglish (that's English and Spanish mixed) in his various reports. He lost it looks like because that did not fit into the parameters of what is protected by the 14th Amendment and various other legal matters. https://casetext.com/case/rodriguez-v-city-of-clermont

How did this thread go from a carpool request to a discussion of an old case so quickly?
Prior jury service experience. Rodriquez v. City of Claremont was the Ocala Federal case in which I was on the Jury Panel on in January of 2009 (or thereabouts) and then bumped off by the Federal Judge because he thought I was not giving complete answers to various questions. I have a lot of extremely intense and very long term experiences with the legal system so I it is very hard for me to explain things in a few sentence paragraphs which they usually want for Jury Duty. Plus I did not bring any of my supporting documentation which would have taken me days to go over and months to plan ahead on how to present properly.

As others have posted, I don’t recommend carpooling. You might find yourself stranded if the driver is selected or you might have to wait quite a while if you’re driving and the others are selected.
Wish you well with jury duty. I spent 4 weeks on jury duty and it was a less than desirable experience. That being said, I would not try to get out of it as I do feel it’s our duty and obligation.

Thought I jumped into a different thread. So back to carpool. If driving is an issue on you own you do need to make it clear that you need transportation when interviewed. It's not getting out of duty, but if your spouse become ill you would have no way to fufull your obligation

She is either done, going to Jury Duty, or was dismissed.
This pops up quite a bit for Villagers though whenever Sumter, Marion, and Lake Counties need to fill their juries. Probably less often for Federal as they have a larger pool of driver's license people from which to pick so it takes longer to go through the rolls.
