We just received a mail solicitation from an agency called HomeServe, for insurance to cover water line breakage. It came with an alarming description of how expensive it can be to fix underground lines, as if there was a tremendous risk of breakage. If this is not an outright scam, at least it is deceptive advertising. The stupid BBS website gives them an A+ rating for settling 219 complaints in the last 3 years. Yeah, that's an endorsement.

Your homeowners insurance should take care of this if due to a mechanical cause not related to freezing. Gotta give'm an B- for creativity [emoji848]

I suppose it's not technically a "scam" since there really is such a business. So it is "deceptive advertising"

Rental car companies do the same thing. Most automobile policies cover what you may rent. No scam, let the buyer beware.

Hi buzzy: Are you talking about the underground lines that lead to the house or the lines that are within the house? Like any insurance policy you have to read not only what they cover but what they will not not cover.

Homeowner policies are all risk meaning that they will cover a loss unless there is an exclusion. The exclusions usually are those that are uninsurable because of moral hazard or just too costly to insure such as an act of war

So the only way I could answer your question with any sort of reliability is to have an opportunity to review the insurance contract you reference

There is usually coverage for the bursting of pipes.... but you need to read the policy because an insurer's underwriters may have filed their policies differently with the state.

By the way if you desire to pursue this issue I would recommend you speak with your insurance agent

Personal Best Regards

I have to ask - What is the stupid BBS or just the BBS?

Sorry, it's BBB, for Better Business Bureau. This is the organization that we once thought rated the quality and integrity of businesses.

Here is a quote from their own reviews:

"Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation.

To be accredited by BBB, a business must apply for accreditation and BBB must determine that the business meets BBB accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. BBB Accredited Businesses must pay a fee for accreditation review/monitoring and for support of BBB services to the public."

So, to get a good rating, a company must subscribe to the BBB service and show a willingness to resolve complaints. It has nothing to do with the quality of products or services provided by the company. Sounds pretty stupid to me.

buzzy: In my work experience I learned long ago that the BBB was not really reliable nor for that matter many of the rating companies such as Moody's S&P. Perhaps a guide but I wouldn't bet the farm on what they said
