When gas prices were going up we saw increases in food prices that were attributable to transportation costs. Now that gas prices have dropped dramatically, has anyone seen a lowering of food prices?
In my recent trip to Publix I noticed that their food prices are still going up. Maybe it has nothing to do with transportation costs, but is a reflection of seasonally adjusted prices to take advantage of returning Winter residents and the perception that if they have two homes, or can afford to vacation in TV, they must all be wealthy.

Prices for food are rising because someone had the bright idea that we should take food (corn) and subsidize turning it into gasoline. Corn prices have skyrocketed and everything that relies on corn is being hit as well - beef, pork, chicken and eggs; as well as anything that is made with high fructose corn syrup. As long as the pumps say 10% methanol, do not expect this to change.

Exactly right BBQMan. Start reading labels you will be amazed by how many products use corn or a corn by-product.

why doesn't any of this surprise me...first, the corn and ethanol thing was around before $4.00/gallon gas..but for sure....the emphasis on ethanol production surely has effected food prices
high gas $ = higher food $....for sure...but that was just the easy way to justify higher food prices at that moment....now a moment later (today), the corporations will come up with a new reason to keep prices high
has anyone followed the story that now that the price of oil is down and American's are consuming less gas, the Exxon/Mobil's of the world are seeing their every increasing record profits drop....soooo the answer is, cut gasoline production at the refineries to reduce supply and keep the prices and profits up...OPEC is doing the same thing
and the bottom line is that we, the consumers have little or no control over prices...the supply and demand rule just doesn't seem to apply any more, unless its to benefit the corporations
my trash hauler instituted a gas surcharge on everyone....now that the price of fuel is down....there has been no reduction/elimination of the surcharge...when i called and asked about it....i got the old Texas two step and no real answer...so i went with another hauler....when i got a call from the first hauler as to why i left...i asked a simple question...."who do I pass on my increased costs to when the price of fuel or anything else goes up".....again, i got no answer
