Went to the UPS store( the one next door to Winn Dixie) to drop off a pre paid shipping box from Suddenlink.

The box held a cable box- would have taken 2' of packing tape and taken less than 30 seconds to apply-

The clerk said it would be 81 cents for the taping.

Went to the Safeship store north of 466-they handled everything no charge

I spent way more than the 81 cents on gas- if you nickel dime customers, you won't have many customers in the future.

For someone who claims to spend so much on the finest things, it's hard to picture you driving your mercedes to another store over 81 cents.
Do you expect them to provide their services free to everyone or just you?

Well, they gave the person in front of me a book of stamps @ face value. And I did drive my Benz to the other store.

I was in my own business and I didn't nickel dime my customers.

The idea is to maintain a relationship, not just do a job !!!

I was wondering why my UPS stock has risen by $10 a share since late Jan. I guess it was due to the "Don't give away free stuff" policy.

Maybe the government could adopt that motto.

UPS stock has risen because of lower fuel prices, anyone wanna bet they locked in these prices as long as they could-same goes for airlines, and cruise ship companies.

Someone missed the point here. I'm sure it wasn't that the gentleman didn't have 81 cents, it is the idea that a business would charge 81 cents for 2 lousy inches of tape. That in itself is pathetic. I don't blame him for going somewhere else. That's like going to the post office and have them charge you for using their pen. After all, you would be using the ink, right? I guess you can't fix stupid.

I read the post as 2 feet of tape, not 2 inches, no? I can see where a small business might not charge for the occasional use of such supplies to help out a customer, but for a company like UPS? I'm not so sure how it's hard to believe that those little expenditures would add up exponentially!

Besides that, it's absolutely ludicrous to think that ANY business, regardless of size, would give ANYTHING away. I'm pretty sure that nobody goes in to business in order to LOSE money.

I don't care what kind of car you drive, OP..if you feel so entitled, just maybe you're part of the problem.

I was at the Post Office in Fruitland Park and a customer was trying to mail a package and needed packing tape. The customer asked the clerk if they had any packing tape and they said no but you can buy a small roll for X-amount of dollars. They aren't giving it away free either. Can you imagine the people that would bring their packages in and expect the Post Office to use their tape to pack it??

Before everyone blames UPS again, those stores are franchises, they have over 4,400 locations. The franchisee is the one that has to worry about making a profit, and it's not all that easy considering the UPS website shows that a rural location will cost about $139,673 - $254,562 plus $60,000 in liquid assets.

Whether it's 2 inches or 2 feet, the truth is that the OP is one of hundreds of people who go into UPS, USPS, etc.everyday, expecting free tape, or free boxes and packing material, or who don't want to pay the additional postage because it's oversized. As said before, no business can survive by constantly giving things away. To me it's no different than employees stealing from their company thinking they are entitled to the stapler, etc.

Our ups store charges $4.00 for a prepaid package to be dropped of at their store. No tape required. Two streets over the ups store charges 0 to take a prepaid box. Guess which store has lines to pay to package and ship and fax things. The one that cares about their customer and does not charge for something that they do nothing but throw the package in a bin behind them.

You mean they charge to accept pre-paid packages that are going UPS? Ye gods, I hope that idea doesn't catch on.

I think the reasonable way to cover the o.p.'s tape charges for a prepaid box like that is what is done at the Colony Plaza shippers when I've dropped off prepaid Amazon returns: They charge $1 for handling and their employee taking a batch to the shipper since they're not an agent for them (I think it's UPS they do not rep....can't remember details on that, but they do take and drop off the prepaid packages).

Anyway, I think the dollar is fair for handling the prepaid packages. I don't know if they "tape" for the $1, or charge for tape.

It is UPS that Safe Ship in Colony is not affiliated with. They used to take in the UPS boxes for free, but sometime within the last three years started charging $1.

We take USPS and UPS prepaid boxes to UPS at Pinellas. They don't charge for taking in the prepaids. However, I've always taped the boxes myself. Why would you take an open box in and expect them to tape it? If you take something loose in to them to be packed by them, they charge. They've always charged for that. OP could have walked next-door to Winn Dixie first and bought a roll of packing tape before going into UPS store if he didn't have his own tape.

So it's your dog's poop; take it home. And it's your box to ship, tape it yourself! (Oh, I got threads crossed there...)

Yep $4.00 just to take package out of your hands and drop in the bin. But if you arrive when UPS truck is driving up the driver will take your box, scan it give you a confirmation, and smile and say thank you, all for the price of 0. We have 6 UPS stores that charge for prepaid. I now send fed-ex no drop off fee at their store.

Before blaming the "UPS Store" and giving them a bad rap, I think the store you may be talking about is Village Pack 'n Ship. The UPS store is on Bella Cruz by the Publix.

Are you aware that The UPS Store is a franchise and NOT owned by UPS.
All the supplies, including tape, costs the owner money.
He also gets a big whopping $1.00 for your dropoff.
So before you complain about customer service think about this.

VOICE YOUR ISSUE TO UPS. The store personnel follow rules and cringe when they have to say this to you and others. They are monitored via camera. No charge, no job. I strongly urge you to go the extra mile at no cost and complain on the UPS site for all to see. Huge audience there.

There is also a UPS Store to the right of Winn Dixie in Pinellas Plaza. I use them regularly and have been very pleased with their service. This past Saturday I got there 6 minutes after they closed. Still, they opened the door, took my package and apologized that it would not go out until Monday.

Now that is customer service IMO.

I find it hard to have any sympathy for the OP, and it could be, because I keep a roll of packing tape at home in case I want to seal a package I need to ship. And the store I bought the tape at, charged me for it!
