Update on Costco
Laure Boyd from Valiant Villagers

Earlier this week I spoke with Terry Kay, the assistant for the regional rep for Costco who told me they have no plans in the next year and a half to build in the Village's but highly encouraged our calls of interest. Terrys number is 7709058854. At Terry's urging,I called our County Commissionner Doug Gilpin who also encourged me to have you call him on his cell during the day at 3523030340. He explained that Sumpter County is very fiscally conservative and is directing its incentives towards bringing in 1) distribution wearhouses since we sit at the corner of i75 and the florida turnpike, 2) agricultral such as citrus joined with agricultural research with the university of florida, and 3) manufacturing. He wondered if they were doing enough and said he would bring up the matter of Costco at the next Board of County Commissionners meeting. He is great to talk with so I encourage you to call so he can speak of our interest. I also spoke with the representive with Enterprise Florida, our states economic engine who vets projects and companies for incentive dollars for the governor's approval. However, the Florida legislature who apropriates incentive funds to Enterprise Florida didn't authorize incentive dollars to bring retail into Florida. You could call Heather Squires of Enterprise Florida at 4079565696 and voice your desire for a Costco. There may be something they can do. She is also very nice to talk to. I also found the Village's Commercial Development office, Geno was very helpful and wants to see our community pursue the course we are on. He mentioned that Costco is looking for a community with a population over 250,000 and feels Costco doesn't see that the Village's might also include the populations from Mount Dora, Taveres, Leesburg and Ocala. So I think at this point it's up to all of us and our calls. This may take a while but let's keep pushing!

I can see you WANT Costco, but Costco has to want to be here. I really don't think that Sumter County has anything to do with getting retail establishments here. The retail establishments open new facilities based on their own expansion plans, the size and demographics of an area and the competition. Having Sam's here and the fact that this area is "only" 120K during high season may make their coming here unlikely at this point.

You can barrage them, but I doubt it will change things.
