Hey Indy-Guy,
Thank you. I am forwarding this to Mr. Boomer's computer.
Mr. B. was was Army and was stationed for awhile in Okinawa. He talks about sitting on the beach and watching the Blackbird take off from Kadena. That must have been a sight to behold. After the climb to speed, it looked like the nose was just pointed straight up. He loves all airplanes, but this one is his favorite of them all.
(Getting those SR-71 takeoffs worked in with all that scuba diving there in Okinawa must have been very difficult for Mr. Boomer in his Army days.)
There is a beautiful book about the SR-71, Sled Driver: Flying the World's Fastest Airplane by Brian Shul.
Oh, and the landings were great, too, he said.

Great display of one Bad *&#@ aircraft. I had to pleasure to watch a refueling of a Blackbird. Was on a trip from Okinawa Japan to the Phillippines and heard the call sign come across for the refueling. What a thing of beauty to see that aircraft pull up to the KC-135. Once the probe was disconnected, the Blackbird waved the wings and climbed out of sight in a hurry. One old, but brilliant piece of flying machine.
