Per request of the President of the United States, your flag should be at half-staff until sundown on the day of Nancy Reagan’s internment.

The wording is: US President Barack Obama ordered flags lowered to half-staff Monday at the White House and all federal buildings as the funeral arrangements for former first lady Nancy Reagan were announced.

So unless you live in the White House or a Federal Building. You should leave them up.

Noticed the flags at the rec centers are at half staff. I guess it is optional but also a sign of respect.

Only the President or State Governors can order flags to be flown at half staff. It creates some confusion since there is really no notification to individuals. Obama ordered flags at half staff for the White House and Federal Government buildings. I didn't see anything from our Governor. The Flag Code prevails but I question how many private citizens that fly the flag have read the code.

I would fly ours at half staff in respect for Nancy Reagan but my flag is on a wooden pole that fits into a holder on the front of the house. It doesn't lower or raise.

For the individual who fly the american flag on a pole there is a website they can look at to determine if the flag should be at at half mast or not. I believe it is halfmast.com. I'm hoping someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the site I use to determine the half-staff days. It is also where I buy my flags.

Don't forget that if displaying the flag after dark it should be
properly illuminated.

The president cannot tell people how to fly the flag on their own property. He can only specify how they are flown on federal government property. Governors can also dictate how flags are flown on state property. It is common practice for businesses, public buildings, and home owners to also fly their flag at half-staff.

The most common type of flag mount has two holes into which you can insert the flagpole. The upper one displays the flag at about a 45 degree angle. This is the normal position. The lower hole displays the flag with the staff about parallel to the ground. This is the halt staff position. Some holders are adjustable so that the staff can be lowered to horizontal.
