We are considering building a home with a pool and have been told to avoid a lanai facing west. We will be here year round. Any comments would be helpful.

Do not have your lanai face west. The sun in the afternoon is unbearable, even in winter. Mine faces south

We also specifically chose South, this appears to be a very good orientation. Also, you should limit the number of windows in the house facing west.
Hope this helps.

I believe Northnortheast facing Lanai is the coolest.

House face the north and lanai south seems to work.

I said we would never, ever get a west facing lanai....what's that about never say never?. Anyway, yes, it does get hot but I don't find it unbearable at all. What I do find unbearable however is the windows in my doorwalls....no matter how many time I clean them they are constantly streaked. This normally would not bother me but when the sun is setting and the light is hitting every streak and dust mote in the house, it drives me crazy. For this reason alone I would avoid west facing lanais!...(and it's not laziness, I clean the heck out of them!)

Try "Perfect Glass", which you can get at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and use only Scott paper towels. I, too, tired everything...even the vinegar and newspaper mess, and still streaky. This Perfect Glass seems to work. Lent it to a friend living here, and she went and got some, too. :)

South, our lanai is only heated by the sun this winter, pool almost doesn't need the solar panels pumping water when it get worm.

get the compass app on your phone then go look

South works well. Afternoon sun for swimming and then it cools off for the evening.

For me, south would be unbearably hot most of the year, north too cool during the winter, west no sun in the morning & too much in the afternoon. East is by far the best compromise, morning sun & afternoon shade [emoji940]

We are on our second home we have built in FL. Both lanais have faced West by choice for the sunsets.
We have a pool and like the sun in the afternoon.
Yes it gets hot in the summer so we added electric roll up shades. Best thing we added.
