Outdoor garden hose water???

My neighbor told me that his hose water was white and foamy when he turned it on. I tried mine and the same situation occurred. Just like frothy milk....that's how it looks. Anyone else have this situation with their outside hose water? A little scary if you ask me!

Probably air bubbles. Fill a glass and if it clears in a few minutes - just air bubbles.

IF you live south of 466 you have water from the retaining ponds to water your yard, not the same water as indoor water, so don't EVER drink water for your yard.


OR....water from the tap could be in your hose and lying quietly in a warm place breeding little organisms. Is it JUST for a few seconds when you turn it on and could be water that was lying (laying?) around getting germy?

The water from your outside faucet is potable water. The same as the water
in your house. Irrigation water is different. I'd monitor it carefully and maybe give the water dept a call. Better to be safe than sorry.

Big difference between irrigation and water from the hose bib, which is what the OP asked about. Gracie is correct, don't ever drink from your irrigation system, not really sure how you would accomplish that :), but from the hose bib, it's potable.

are you talking about water from the hose? It might be foamy from water sitting in the hose itself

If the hose is relatively new, it may just be some left over dust/dirt etc inside the hose. If the hose is older, but stays outside in the sun, some of the chemicals of the hose may be breaking down. I have seen this a few times when washing the car. The initial stream of water looks and acts soapy, it soon clears up.
And to confirm what was previously stated, the outside faucets are the SAME water supply as your inside house water. If you are not sure, just go to the garage, and turn off your main valve, then turn on the outside hose, in a few seconds the flow will stop.

Unless you bought a hose specifically labelled drinking safe, there are chemicals and lead in standard garden hoses which can make the water risky. The lead is a pigment stabilizer in the coloration. Especially an issue for children who are more sensitive to lead. And sadly not all labelled safe hoses are actually safe.
