Wondering if anyone has had algae growth on their roof shingles and what, if anything, they did about it?

Not at this house, but at our former lake home in Wisconsin.
DH installed a zinc strip under the very first row of shingles. Look at roofs. You will see algae staining EXCEPT where there is flashing.
There are potions to take it off, but they are hard on the roof.

Some people have had success with a bleach and TSP solution. The algae will typically form on the north side of the house. Most (all) shingles installed in the Southeast US have copper laced granules. The copper will prevent algae growth. It appears from my previous home that the copper wears away after about 10 years and then you may see some algae growth. I assume your roof is at least 10 years old? You can contact a roofer and have a copper strip installed near the ridge line. When it rains, the trace amounts of copper will prevent algae growth.

In PA we had a company that cleaned the roof with a two year guarantee. We lived in a wooded area and were always dealing with the algae issue. There are also companies here that do the same thing and google is a great source to do some research. Be careful, the process will always remove granules and the stronger the cleaning solutions the more the degradation.

I have been a long time customer of the roof products from
Roof Cleaner, Mold Killer, Spider & Moth Traps | CleanerToday.com (http://www.cleanertoday.com)
These products safely keep my roofs clean and lasting as long as possible.

I think you may mean "Wet & Forget". I recently bought this just to try as many of my customers have asked me about it. I found a great deal on this at Costco....two pack of concentrate that made 9 gallons of solution....do not remember what I paid but it was well under $30.00.

i've used Spray and Forget(bought concentrate at Ace Hardware) on roof algae up north and also on algae here. Works great. I lightly scrubbed my roof up north and it looks like new! Kind of unbelievable. The good part is the residual on the roof keeps working and I just spray it every other year to keep algae growth in check and I don't have to scrub it again. I'm sure it extended the roofs life by years.
